SUMMARY:eWaste Recycling [FREE!]
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/501374/ ] Ann Arbor Public Schools and the Climate Savers Computing Initiative @ U-M to Host Free e-Waste Recycling Events

ANN ARBOR\, Mich. (Apr. 22\, 2008) – Ann Arbor Public Schools (AAPS) and the Climate Savers Computing Initiative @ the University of Michigan (CSCI @ U-M) are sponsoring free e-waste recycling events to responsibly recycle electronic equipment.

E-waste is the fastest growing waste stream in the country. It consumes landfill space while its raw materials could be reused to manufacture new materials. Untreated e-waste may contain hazardous materials like lead and mercury\, which can adversely affect the environment.

“Every year\, Earth Day reminds Americans of their responsibility to the future of the environment. As technology rapidly changes\, new environmental issues arise. It’s extremely important that we recognize the negative environmental impacts of e-waste\,” said Bill Wrobleski\, project director of the CSCI @ U-M. “This is a great opportunity for the community to get old or unused electronic equipment out of their homes without creating more waste\, and without putting their data at risk.”

All e-waste items dropped-off during the designated times at Pioneer High School and the WISD District Office will be recycled responsibly by an EPA-certified company. The collected equipment will be destroyed and recycled in the U.S. in accordance with all local\, state and federal guidelines\, regulations and laws pertaining to the collection\, transportation and recycling of electronics equipment.

The CSCI @ U-M is a new green computing effort focused on saving energy and conserving natural resources. The two-year project aims to spread awareness about computers’ energy consumption\, build best practices and change behaviors on and off campus.
