SUMMARY:Indie Games Arcade
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/1185206/ ] A selection of the best and most interesting independent games will be on show this year at the Indie Arcade\, part of the Eurogamer Expo. Organised by Pixel-Lab and Eurogamer as part of the London Games Festival\, the Indie Arcade will be happening at the Old Truman Brewery\, 28th and 29th of October.

Exclusive titles on show will include the upcoming PC version of Jonathan Blow’s Braid\, Amanita Design’s upcoming adventure game Machinarium\, and recently announced project Plain Sight\, in development by London based studio Beatnik Games. The developers themselves will be on hand to play against people at the Expo\, nearly a month before the game goes into public beta testing.

Other titles playable at the Arcade will include Introversion’s Multiwinia\, 2D Boy’s World of Goo\, FlashBang Studios’ Off Road Velociraptor Safari\, and Mousechief’s Dangerous High School Girls in Trouble. Shift\, War Twat and Psychosomnium (It's like You Have to Burn the Rope\, but way better).

Rupert Loman\, Managing Director of Eurogamer said: “We're delighted to have the Indie Arcade as part of the Eurogamer Expo. As anyone who has followed Eurogamer over the years will testify\, we've always had a soft spot for independent games - and being able to help introduce these great games to thousands of gamers at the Expo is very exciting for us.”

David Hayward of Pixel-Lab said “Indie Games have long been overlooked in a landscape of boxed games with £50 price tags\, but that’s changing now. Whether done commercially or not\, indie development is an important strand of the culture of games\, where smaller studios and auteurs can make significant contributions to innovation and the aesthetics of games. I’m really pleased to be working on the indie arcade this year\, especially as it will feature the public debuts of several titles.”

Among this group of anticipated upcoming commercial indie games\, there will also be a surprise selection of some of the most interesting and experimental freeware indie projects. Come down to see the best of Indie\; entry is included in the ticket price for the Eurogamer Expo.

SUMMARY:Scarce Talent
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/1185230/ ] The skills required to become an environmental artist\, programmer\, or animator are becoming common knowledge\, but certain parts of game design are sorely neglected. Scarce Talents\, on Tuesday the 28th of October at the Old Truman Brewery\, will delve into these areas.

Many seeking to break into the industry have experience of using game development tools at home\, but what bridges the gap between mod-making and professional game development? Personnel from Splash Damage will be on hand to show the path they took from net-based mod team to AAA development studio.

Research and Development is an obscure\, sometimes even neglected area for most studios\, but not all programming and art jobs are in game development. Kuju’s London based R&D Department will be speaking on the vital role such work has for their portfolio of studios.

Audio course graduates and professionals alike wonder\, and ask us regularly\, how to get into creating audio for videogames. David Wise\, Senior Musician at Rare\, will reveal exactly what sound professionals need to know to break in.

While examining these arcane corners of game development\, these speakers will also be joined by Crytek\, Monumental Games and Rebellion.

Come down to the Old Truman Brewery on Tuesday the 27th of October to talk to all of the studios at the fair\, and learn a thing or two from them.

The portfolio surgeries will take place in the Old Truman Brewery during the Gamesindustry.biz Career Fair. Whatever branch of game development you’d like to go into\, bring your portfolio down for the panel to look at\, and raise your chances of getting the game development you’ve been looking for.

DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/1116631/ ] Talking about PC Gaming.
Quite simply\, RPS is about PC gaming - all of PC gaming\, rather than just one of the weird and wonderful niches most other PC-centric sites confine themselves to. It’s written by four of Britain’s top games journalists\, and it aims to cover everything from the latest breaking stories about the biggest releases to esoterica from the format’s obscurest peninsulas.

SUMMARY:Coding Dojo
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/1181593/ ] The Skills Week Coding Dojo\, taught by Jez Nicholson from NCsoft\, will give participants an introduction to the basics of Agile Development and Adobe Flash. While web games are often overlooked by the mainstream games industry\, the number of people playing them is skyrocketing\, and the tools for creating them are becoming increasingly powerful.

The Coding Dojo is a workshop where everyone joins in as part of the team. Participants will learn and discuss Agile Development by collaboratively building a game in Flash. A single project is displayed for the whole group to discuss\, while students continuously pair up to work 15 minute shifts on the code.

This is a beginner level workshop\, and while any Flash Actionscript 3.0 knowledge is welcome\, students do not require it to attend. Come to the Coding Dojo and you're sure to pick up the basics.

This workshop costs £5\, and places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment. Tickets are available now from http://codingdojo.eventbrite.com

The Coding Dojo is part of Skillsweek (www.skillsweek.com). SUMMARY:Playful:Game Design London (GDL)
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/684430/ ] Playful is a one-day event all about game design – in all its manifestations\, throughout the contemporary media landscape. The event aims to promote lively debate on the nature of games: what they mean to different people – both inside and outside the industry. Focusing on the creative and cultural dimensions\, Playful examines game design as both a discipline and craft\, offering different perspectives on its current and future possibilities.

This year the event goes outreach. The conference will feature key practitioners from other areas of the creative arts\, and ‘collide’ them with practitioners from within.

Following on from Sense of Play 06 and 07\, Playful is moving further afield to bring in experts and exponents from the cultural ‘mainstream’ to explore how to make the games medium more meaningful\, to more people. Attracting a wider audience is now very much in the minds of many developers and publishers\, and the knowledge that 65% of people who could engage with interactive entertainment choose not to. Despite bold efforts in the past few years by insiders and outsiders\, cultural deficiencies are still there – or at least perceived to be there. So what can those of us who design games really learn from other parts of the creative arts? Conversely what does game design have to offer other areas of entertainment and culture?

Playful looks to chart the way forward\, and on its way will visit not just the conventional console and PC game\, but the myriad of interactive and play-based entertainment experiences which are increasingly becoming part of online\, film\, television\, theatre\, installation and performance arts.

The event will look for the interesting and the valuable from a range of areas outside the traditional creative industries including built environment\, architects\, authors\, scientists\, as well as the core networked and creative sectors we work with.

      Speakers

This list is still slightly subject to change. Also\, we're hoping to get some videos from the speakers as a teaser to what they might be talking about...
