SUMMARY:Sun Up: Scaling Solar Power in California
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4961598/ ] Sun Up: Scaling Solar Power In California

 Bob Epstein\, Founder\, Environmental Entrepreneurs
 Nancy McFadden\, SVP\, PG&E
Mike Peevey\, Chair\, California Public Utilities Commission
 Mike Splinter\, CEO\, Applied Materials

Solar power is surging and yet it is still a small part of California's overall energy supply.
How will the state's plan calling for a third of all electricity to be from renewable sources by 2030 impact the growth of commercial and industrial solar?

What are the key obstacles and drivers to meeting that ambitious goal? With the price of photovoltaic cells falling\, how will that technology stack up against concentrated solar power?

Will novel financing schemes and buyer's clubs drive demand and make residential solar more accessible? Our panel of experts discusses how bright the future is for sun energy in the
 Golden State.

SUMMARY:Urban Permaculture Design Course
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4964842/ ] Jan 13 through March 13 - Wed. NIGHTS 6:30-9:30pm and Sat. ALL DAY - approx. 80 hours
Permaculture is about designing ecological human habitats and production systems. It is a land use and community building system which strives for the harmonious integration of human dwellings\, microclimate\, annual and perennial plants\, animals\, soils\, and water into stable\, productive communities.

The focus is not on these elements themselves\, but rather on the relationships created among them by the way we place them in the landscape. This synergy is further enhanced by mimicking patterns found in nature.

It has been successfully used around the world to maximize food production\, regenerate springs\, cool homes without air conditioning\, transform lives and reduce pollution\, to name a few.

The essence of Permaculture is summed up by 3 ethics:
 -Care of the Earth
 -Care of the People
 -Share the Surplus

 *Urban Permaculture
We start with the standardized Permaculture curriculum and add onto it insights and strategies for applying Permaculture to the urban setting. This lengthens the course to a degree\, we do not omit any of the standard materials.

Over 50% of the world's population now lives in urban centers and the number is growing. Adopting strategies to meet our needs in a sane and ethical way is critical. In this course\, we will learn how to design those strategies.

 *Active Design Course
This is a design course and participants will be working in teams producing a design for an actual project here in San Francisco. Throughout the course\, we will share with you the tools and strategies required to complete the design which all culminates in the final presentation at the completion of the course.

Keeping with Permaculture ethics\, if you cannot afford the course\, please contact David so we can work something out.

SUMMARY:King of Coal: Prince of Wind?
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4962374/ ] The King of Coal. Prince of Wind?
 Wyoming Governor Dave Freudenthal

With America's largest deposits of coal and uranium\, Wyoming sends massive amounts of energy to California and the rest of the country.

Governor Dave Freudenthal is trying to chart a new path for an extraction state where half the people don't believe global warming is real.

He's looking to cleaner ways of using coal and believes natural gas is a winner\, for fueling transportation or generating electricity.

Wind power is also promising but getting it to market without trampling on endangered species and testy landowners is a challenge.

Can California technology and innovation help illuminate the way? Join us for a special opportunity to discuss America's energy future with the down-to-earth chief executive of this powerhouse state.

SUMMARY:The Peak: Oil\, Water and Climate
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4961674/ ] The Peak: Oil\, Water and Climate

 Chris Martenson\, Author

A former employee of the International Energy Agency told the Guardian newspaper recently that figures about worldwide oil supplies are exaggerated. That reinforced what peak oil adherents such as Chris Martenson have been saying for years. In addition to oil\, he discusses how the intertwining effects of the economy and environment will coalesce to shape a future radically different from the past. A scientist and former executive for a Fortune 300 company\, Martenson puts together the macro-trends that will shape our finances and our relationships to our natural and social environments in the years to come.
