SUMMARY:Snowballs and Supernovae: Recreating astrophysical events in the laboratory using high-power lasers
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/5175298/ ] Professor Roland A Smith\, Professor of Laser Physics\, presents his Inaugural Lecture on\; “Snowballs and Supernovae: Recreating astrophysical events in the laboratory using high-power lasers.”

In the Chair: Professor Jonathan Marangos\, Lockyer Chair in Physics\, Imperial College London.

Vote of Thanks: Professor Henry Hutchinson\, University of Bordeaux.

A tea/coffee reception will precede the lecture at 16:45 and a drinks reception will follow in the Blackett Common Room\, Level 8\, Blackett Building

Abstract: Pulsed lasers now allow us to deliver peak powers in excess of one Petawatt (1015W\, over 100x the world’s total electrical generating capacity) to a small target in under a picosecond. The extraordinarily energetic plasmas created in this way can be harnessed to study exotic process in the laboratory that have previously only been hinted at in observations of distant astrophysical objects such as supernova remnants and plasma jets launched during star formation. Surprisingly\, many of the physical processes which operate over light year distances and timescales of thousands of years in these objects can be recreated in the laboratory\, provided sufficiently extreme initial conditions can be reached. In this lecture I will explore the development of high power lasers\, how they can be applied to create extreme states of matter in the laboratory\, and how these small scale experiments can provide insight into the birth and death of stars.

Biography: Roland Smith graduated from the University of Bristol in 1985 and undertook his PhD research in the Plasma Physics group of Imperial College\, working at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory on experimental x-ray laser systems. In 1989 he joined the then newly formed Blackett Laboratory Laser Consortium as a Post Doc to study laser produced plasmas\, and was drawn into the development of new types of short-pulse\, ultra-high-power lasers. This lead to an EPSRC Advanced Fellowship in 1993 which he used to blend laser development with high-field atomic physics and plasma physics in areas such as high harmonic generation and radiation transport. He was appointed Lecturer in Instrumentation Physics at Imperial College in 1998\, becoming a Reader in Laser Physics in 2003. His research interests have evolved to encompass nanoscale objects in intense laser fields\, attoscience\, and laser driven laboratory astrophysics. In 2008 he was appointed Professor of Laser Physics.

SUMMARY:Virgin Galactic: the story of making space travel available to everyone
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/5175289/ ] Virgin Galactic is a company owned and established by Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group to undertake the challenge of making private space travel available to everyone and by creating the world's first commercial spaceline. The company are developing and building the world’s first fully re-useable commercial manned space launch system. The business will carry space tourists\, space scientists\, scientific payloads and also be capable of launching an unmanned low earth orbit small satellite deployment vehicle.

There are many firsts in the Virgin Galactic project\, from the ground breaking use of carbon composites through to SpaceShipTwo’s unique hybrid rocket motor. Speaking on the eve of the second phase of Virgin Galactic’s test flying programme\, Will intends to share the story of how the most exciting modern aerospace project moved from Sir Richard Branson’s dream of 21st century space access to a billion dollar industrial business.

Will Whitehorn joined Virgin Group in 1987\, as head of corporate public and investor relations. From 1993 to 1995\, he worked with Sir Richard Branson\, and other directors from around the Virgin Group on developing a strategy to expand the brand into a number of new areas\, this resulted in the launch of Virgin Radio in 1994\, Virgin Direct in 1995\, Virgin Cinemas in 1995\, Virgin Net in 1996\, Virgin Rail in 1997 and Virgin Mobile in 1999.

Will was appointed President of Virgin Galactic LLC in 2004 following the successful negotiation of the rights to develop technology in Space Ship One\, licensed from the Mojave Aerospace Ventures\, a Paul G Allen company. The company is now developing Space Ship Two with The Spaceship Company and Scaled Composites in Mojave\, California.

He graduated from Aberdeen University in 1981 with an honours degree in history and economics.

This is the 2nd annual Leslie Chamberlain\, held in memory of Leslie Chamberlain and his service to the Worshipful Company of Tin Plate Workers\, which is committed to supporting the trade and craft industries through charitable grants. Leslie was first admitted to the Company in 1938 at the age of 21. In 1959 he became Master of the Company – one of the youngest ever masters to be appointed. He dedicated much of his life to the Company\, promoting its causes\, constitution and financial stability. He passed away in 2007\, just before his 90th birthday.

SUMMARY:Financial\, Ecological and Disease-Transmitting Networks and their Dynamics
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/5175302/ ] Professor Lord May of Oxford OM AC Kt FRS\, University of Oxford presents the Third Peter Lindsay Memorial Lecture on: "Financial\, Ecological and Disease-Transmitting Networks and their Dynamics."

Abstract: The transmission of infection among humans or other animals\, the spread of viruses or worms among computers\, transfers of funds within financial markets\, and the way ecosystems respond to disturbance are four among many examples of nonlinear dynamical systems whose behaviour depends upon the nature of the network of connections among nodes (that is individuals\, computers\, banks/traders\, species\, respectively). Recent concern about HIV/AIDS\, SARS\, and foot and mouth disease among livestock have prompted advances in our understanding of the interplay between network patterns and effective control measures. Separate\, but ultimately related\, work deals with older questions about ecosystem resilience\, and newer questions about the overall stability of financial markets (as distinct from individual funds). My talk aims to be a brief but opinionated overview of all this.

Biography: Robert McCredie May\, Lord May of Oxford\, OM AC Kt FRS\, holds a Professorship jointly at Oxford University and Imperial College\, London and is a Fellow of Merton College\, Oxford. He was until recently President of The Royal Society (2000-2005)\, and before that Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK Government and Head of the UK Office of Science and Technology (1995-2000). His career includes a Personal Chair in Physics at Sydney University aged 33\, Class of 1877 Professor of Zoology and Chairman of the Research Board at Princeton\, and in 1988 a move to Britain as Royal Society Research Professor. Particular interests include how populations are structured and respond to change\, particularly with respect to infectious diseases and biodiversity. He was awarded a Knighthood in 1996\, and appointed a Companion of the Order of Australia in 1998\, both for “Services to Science”. In 2001 he was one of the first 15 Life Peers created by the “House of Lords Appointments Commission”. In 2002\, The Queen appointed him to the Order of Merit (the fifth Australian in its 100-year history). Honours include: the Royal Swedish Academy’s Crafoord Prize (bioscience and ecology’s equivalent of a Nobel Prize)\; the Swiss-Italian Balzan Prize (for “seminal contributions to [understanding] biodiversity”)\; and the Japanese Blue Planet Prize (“for developing fundamental tools for ecological conservation planning”). He is a Foreign Member of the US National Academy of Sciences\, an Overseas Fellow of the Australian Academy of Sciences\, and an Honorary Fellow of various other Academies and Learned Societies. In 2007 he received the Royal Society’s Copley Medal\, its oldest (1731) and most prestigious award\, given annually for “outstanding achievements in research in any branch of science”.

SUMMARY:Humanoid Robots - Driving the Future
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/5174147/ ] About this event

Since earliest history humans have created legends and myths around mechanical systems that have the capabilities (or superior capabilities) to humans. In the 21st century\, with advances in computational\, mechatronic and cognitive technology\, and even more critical changes in demographics\, the idea of machines that emulate and serve humans is approaching a (industrial\, commercial and social) reality. Yet many people remain sceptical about the need for\, and possibility of\, viable humanoid.

This lecture will consider these needs and development of the mechatronic technologies needed to create a viable humanoid. It will explore the history of humanoid development from the early 1970s to the most advanced current systems and future possibilities. This will focus on the mechatronic development of the iCub (a child sized (4 years old) humanoid) before considering the design of a (as yet unnamed) humanoid that introduces a number of new technical innovations. The lecture will outline future advances in the mechatronics (and cognitive aspects of the humanoids) that yet need to be achieved. There will be a brief consideration of the social\, ethical and economic viability of humanoids.

SUMMARY:Health 2.0
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/5175079/ ] he Health 2.0 Conference is the leading showcase of online and mobile technologies in healthcare. After 5 successful conferences in the United States\, we’re coming across the pond!

The agenda will span the key elements of Health 2.0 and showcase how consumers and professionals:

Search for more appropriate health content\,
Share personal information in Communities and
Use Tools to self-manage and enhance the patient-physician relationship
You will gain unique insight into the following questions:

How does specialized Search relate to Health 2.0? Is there life beyond Google in Europe?
Are online patient communities different in Europe and across European countries?
 Have European doctors gone 2.0?
Are personal health records being adopted by health care systems in Europe?
How do European hospitals\, payors and governments relate to Health 2.0?
What opportunities exist for Pharma to play a bigger role in Health 2.0?

Health 2.0 Europe will be a unique conference. We will integrate the best of European health technologies\, and compare\, contrast and contextualize them with leading examples of Health 2.0 from North America. We’ll be seeing:

What works in the context of Europe’s evolving health care systems\,
Whether there are commonalities across European systems that can lead to economies of scale (or not!) and
What the “boundary-less” online world means for consumers and physicians working in distinct health care systems.
There’ll also be a presentation of the latest thinking about Health 2.0 in the European context\, special videos\, an unconference session\, the introduction of new companies at Health 2.0 Europe’s Launch!\, a great networking party at a very famous Parisian institution\, and much\, much more to keep you very stimulated for a day and a half.

Oh\, and did we mention that it’s in Paris in the Springtime?

SUMMARY:Lift10
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/3079172/ ] Lift10 will welcome 1000 participants from 40 countries to explore the most overlooked aspect of innovation: people. Known in the techno-parlance as users\, consumers\, clients\, participants\, prosumers\, citizens or activists\, people ultimately define the success of all technological and entrepreneurial projects. They adopt or refute\, promote or demote\; embrace\, reject\, or re-purpose. Their approaches are unique\, influenced by cultural and generational diversity. A decade after the rebirth of user-centered design and innovation\, it's time to explore the myths and uncover the reality behind the "connected people".

SUMMARY:Create10
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/5167587/ ] The blend of thought and practice that the CREATE conference wants to encourage was nicely summed up recently by interaction designer\, Jack Schulze: “No one cares about what you think\, unless you do what you think. No one cares what you do\, unless you think about what you do.” Our past conferences have been well received for providing a friendly and informal setting where networking\, discussion and practical work are high on the agenda.

After three very successful years at the BCS offices in London’s Covent Garden\, the annual CREATE conference is moving north to Edinburgh Napier University\, inspiring this year’s broad theme of ‘transitions’. The move to the university’s city centre venue will allow the conference to expand and also provides an opportunity to launch a new student design competition. The conference organizers are particularly pleased that the winning students’ entries will be on public show at Inspace\, a fantastic new-media exhibition space.

The CREATE conference is all about creating innovative interactions\, whether digital consumer products\, interactive services or interaction paradigms. The event is an opportunity to share and discuss the design opportunities and dilemmas that are currently being addressed by practitioners and researchers from the commercial\, public and academic sectors.

As well as presentation of academic research and student work\, the event will provide real learning opportunities through hands-on workshops\, case studies and demonstrations. We also welcome theoretical and research perspectives on the process of design innovation and approaches to creativity in HCI\; how human factors can be integrated within a creative design process\, methods that encourage creativity in interaction design\, and the challenges of working in multi-disciplinary teams.

CREATE is jointly organised by the Human-Computer Interaction Specialist Group of the Ergonomics Society\, the British Computing Society's Interaction Specialist Group and Edinburgh Napier University’s Centre for Interaction Design.
The Call for Participation will be out soon for papers\, videos\, exhibitions\, demos and workshops. If you would like to be kept informed please email: Ingi Helgason\, Centre for Interaction Design\, Edinburgh Napier University.
