SUMMARY:A Salon for Artists with Blanche Brown\, Charlotte Gordon\, and others
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4840975/ ] Please join CIIS' Department of Writing\, Consciousness & Creative Inquiry (WCC) for "A Brief History of Consciousness: A Salon for Artists with Blanche Brown\, Charlotte Gordon and Robert McDermott\, moderated by WCC faculty member and fiction writer Carolyn Cooke.

How can literature and the arts explore and embody consciousness? This conversation with three artistic and intellectual luminaries will probe how origin stories\, myths\, archetypes and ecstatic revelations can uncover the material given to us as artists\, feminists\, activists and earth-changers in the postmodern present. From Buddha and Mohammed\, from the bible to the Bhagavad Gita\, Mohammed to the Virgin Mary\, from Sarah and Hagar to William James\, from Nigeria to Haiti\, from the spirituality of Green politics to the spiritual dimensions of radical art forms\, this lively conversation will attempt to map the evolution of human consciousness while dismantling the political constructs of East and West\, old and new\, and expand boundaries of what we know about race\, class\, gender and sexual orientation.

The awakening ethnic consciousness of the late 60's propelled BLANCHE BROWN into an in depth study of African-American Culture and the possibilities of movement\, from afro-Haitian\, ballet\, jazz\, folk dance and tap. After graduating from San Francisco State with an emphasis in Dance\, she worked with the Wajumbe Performance Ensemble\, including African based dance forms in her repertoire. CHARLOTTE GORDON has published two books of poetry. Her biography of the 17th century poet\, Anne Bradstreet won a New England Book Award for non-fiction. Her latest book\, The Woman Who Named God retells the famous Biblical story of Abraham\, Sarah\, and Hagar. ROBERT MCDERMOTT is professor of Philosophy and Religion at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco. He received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Boston University and is president emeritus of the California Institute of Integral Studies.

SUMMARY:Do Not Go Gently: The Biology of Aging
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4844258/ ] Aging poses a fascinating intellectual puzzle. Why does the cellular machinery that works so well early in our lives start to fail as we get older? Different organisms have wildly different lifespans\, suggesting that it isn't a simple matter of "wear and tear."

Researchers have learned a lot about the underlying causes of aging. Our stem cells slowly exhaust themselves\; our hormones conspire against us\; the oxygen we breathe damages our DNA - and this is just a partial list. We're beginning to understand how these many factors are coordinated\, but we still have a long way to go.

There's also a practical motivation for studying aging. Chronological age is the greatest risk factor for many life-threatening illnesses: cancers\, Alzheimer's\, diabetes\, heart disease\, stroke\, and others. What is the connection between aging and disease? By studying the fundamental mechanisms of aging\, might we learn how to treat all age-related diseases simultaneously? What does this tell us about how we set funding priorities for biomedical research?

Finally: Is significant lifespan extension a realistic possibility - within our lifetimes\, or ever? What are the ethical\, sociological\, and existential issues raised by the prospect of a vastly extended human lifespan?

Chris will be in conversation with our favorite science comedian\, Brian Malow (http://www.sciencecomedian.com)

SUMMARY:Market Street Gallery presents Artist John F. Melvin
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4768926/ ] Market Street Gallery will be hosting an artist reception for artist John F. Melvin\, a San Francisco painter who works in the impressionistic style.

Melvin's newest series of 15 large-scale portraits came about because of his love of painting women. To Melvin\, their grace\, form and beauty coupled with their feminine personalities create an inspiring subject for the artist.

The young mothers in this series are all well educated and outspoken. Most have careers yet they remain focused on their children. Each has an interesting story\, some that are sad but all inspiring.

To develop each piece\, Melvin begins with a photograph and an interview of the sitter\, creates a sketch and then proceeds to the painting. Using loose brush work and a palette knife\, he develops a portrait with many abstract features. Some of these are quite representational while others\, following in the footsteps of Matisse and Soutine\, employ facial distortion for emotional effect.

The visual impact of seeing all the works exhibited together is particularly enjoyable as each portrait has its own personality yet is influenced by all of the others nearby.

Currently\, Melvin serves as the chairman of the board of Artspan\, a non-profit organization supporting
the visual arts in San Francisco\, and has worked previously as an investment banker.

Market Street Gallery exhibits work of established and emerging artists of the San Francisco Bay Area. Exhibitions include all categories of work\, including painting\, printmaking\, photography\, sculpture\, fashion\, street art\, installation art and film and video media.

SUMMARY:Opening the Essay: A workshop and reading with poet\, Jane Hirshfield
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4876084/ ] Sat\, Dec 5\, Workshop: 4pm-5:30pm\; Reading: 7pm-9pm
The California Institute of Integral Studies presents "Opening the Essay: A Workshop and Reading for Artists and Others" with poet\, Jane Hirshfield.

About the Workshop: This brief workshop will explore essay writing as a tool of opening: a way to expand investigation\, discovery\, and understanding for those who may not ordinarily or primarily write in this form. The essay form has its roots in a word meaning "try\," "trial\," "test\," and "weighing"\; it is a way to sketch and stretch through into new and deepened realms. We'll look at how essays think\, how to choose a subject\, and the many possibilities inherent in the form.

Participants should bring paper\, pen\, and a first sentence and title from an essay (by someone else) that they admire.

Following the workshop\, Jane Hirshfield will read from her work\, beginning at 7pm.

Jane Hirshfield's work appears in The New Yorker\, The Atlantic\, Orion\, and five editions of The Best American Poetry\, is the author of six prize-winning poetry collections\, including After and Given Sugar\, Given Salt\, as well as a now classic book of essays\, Nine Gates: Entering the Mind of Poetry. She has also edited and cotranslated several anthologies including Women in Praise of the Sacred: Forty-three Centuries of Spiritual Poetry by Women. In 2004 the Academy of American Poets honored her with the 70th Academy Fellowship for distinguished poetic achievement.

This event is sponsored by the Writing\, Consciousness\, and Creative Inquiry Department and the Public Programs Department at CIIS.
