SUMMARY:7th Annual Brian Setzer Orchestra CHRISTMAS ROCKS! Extravaganza
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4428337/ ] Stray Cats rocker-become-big-band-leader Brian Setzer has a rep for revving up classics like “Pennsylvania 6-5000” with rap\, tape loops\, and a hard-driving guitar lead. Now he lights a raging Yule fire with a show that soups up seasonal favorites from “Sleigh Ride” to “(Everybody’s Waitin’ for) The Man with the Bag.” “Setzer kept the audience on their feet and dancing” (AllAboutJazz.com).

"Like pouring gasoline on a fire" is how Brian Setzer describes 1998’s double-platinum\, Grammy-winning\, Top 10-charting “The Dirty Boogie.” But while Setzer wanted to fan the flames with the follow-up\, he also wanted to jack up the octane.

"It would be an easy trap to fall into to do ‘Dirty Boogie II\,’" says Setzer. "The criticism of swing is that it’s music from the past. I wanted to keep a lot of the same sound -- this isn’t a harpsichord record all of a sudden --but I wanted this to be music for 2000 and beyond.

“So we experimented\, we stretched out. We said\, ‘Let’s get crazy and go for it.’" So on “Vavoom!\," the fourth album from The Brian Setzer Orchestra\, released August 1\, 2000\, he "scuffed it up." For most of the album’s six classics\, Setzer says he "had to choose ways to make them mine. It was like rebuilding a house by taking the old one down except for one wall. In the end\, it’s so far away from the original\, you can’t imagine what it looked like when you started."

Not only did he pen lyrics to the traditional instrumental "In The Mood\," creating "Gettin’ In The Mood\," but he even added a rap. On "Pennsylvania 6-5000\," there are new lyrics\, tape loops and even a hip-hop beat.

"It took me by surprise that the hip-hop beat and the swing beat are parallel. When I heard it\, I went\, ‘I’ll be damned\, it worked\, let’s keep going.’ I can tell if something’s good if I smile. This made me smile. I wanted to make these songs so brand-new that people would go ‘Wow! I never thought ...’"

Along with a faithful rendition of "Mack The Knife\," a psychobilly version of the instrumental "Caravan\," a rockin’ doo-wop take on "Gloria" and a freewheeling "Americano" (translated from the Italian original\, made famous by Jude Law’s and Matt Damon’s performance in "The Talented Mr. Ripley")\, Setzer also penned eight originals.

"My influences are always with me. All I can do is sit with a guitar and write rockabilly songs and\, if they’re good\, then write the charts for the horns and turn them into the animals that they are."

“Vavoom!\,” produced by Peter Collins (Jewel\, Indigo Girls\, Nanci Griffith)\, Glen Ballard (Alanis Morissette\, No Doubt) and David Darling\, also adds female background singers to The Brian Setzer Orchestra experience for the first time.

"It’s a different dimension\, especially live. Besides\, they ain’t bad to look at after seeing us slobs for an hour and a half."

As a result\, the band’s tour this summer has been titled the "Here I Go Again Draggin’ 16 Guys (And A Couple Chicks) Around The World Tour."

What is nearly as unlikely as the success of The Brian Setzer Orchestra -- a true\, 17-piece Big Band fronted by an electric guitar -- is that no one has jumped on the bandwagon. The reason\, suggests Setzer\, is simple: "This isn’t like punk rock\, where anyone could pick up a guitar and play loud. The level of musicianship required is pretty high."

Another reason may be that no one else has had the musical guts as well as chops.

"What made it happen is that we’re original\," Setzer says. "This is American music\, it’s ingrained in us\, but we took it in a new direction. This is a whole different beast than a ‘40s Big Band. The only similarity is the instrument lineup.

SUMMARY:Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Winter Tour 2009
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4427263/ ] Sheer Entertainment! Go here: http://www.trans-siberian.com

Trans-Siberian Orchestra was founded in 1996 in New York City by composers Paul O'Neill and Robert Kinkel\, and Savatage lead singer Jon Oliva.

O'Neill had managed and produced rock bands including Aerosmith\, Humble Pie and Scorpions\, later writing for and producing Savatage\, where he began working with Kinkel and Oliva. The concept for a band playing Christmas carols in a rock opera style was not received warmly by the industry\, but quickly proved a success with adults as well as young people.

In the recording studio\, Trans-Siberian Orchestra uses a full 60-piece orchestra and a choir. As of 2004\, their touring band included fourteen vocalists\, fourteen musicians\, and two narrators.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra released their debut album Christmas Eve and Other Stories in 1996\, and it remains their best-selling album. Their 1998 release The Christmas Attic was similarly a concept album with a Christmas theme. In 2000\, they released their first (and to date only) non-Christmas album\, Beethoven's Last Night\, a concept album about Ludwig van Beethoven's last night on earth\, during which he meets Fate\, her son Twist\, and Mephistopheles.

After several years of touring\, they returned to the studio with another full-length album\, Lost Christmas Eve\, and the accompanying DVD/3-CD release The Christmas Trilogy\, which contained all three of their Christmas albums to date.

With Trans-Siberian Orchestra\, first the music is created with no artificial limitations\, and then we seek out within the classical\, rock\, Broadway and R & B worlds\, the very best singers and musicians to bring each song to life. This also in many ways forces us to operate on a higher level. This environment has the additional benefit of causing a cross pollenization of musical ideas\, creating hybrid forms of music that normally never would have occurred\, such as an R&B singer doing a classical style melody and bringing gospel touches to it that causes it to glitter in ways that even the creators could not have predicted. Another very important aspect in the creation of the band\, is that there could be no limits on the members\; we mix all races and ages.

The young get to mine the experience of the old musicians\, while they can't help to be inspired by the enthusiasm of people just entering the business. This has created a vast constantly changing musical group that even we do not know what it is going to do next.

Once when asked what Trans-Siberian Orchestra was about\, Paul O'Neill replied\, "It's about creating great art. When asked to define what great art was\, Paul said\, "The purpose of art is to create an emotional response in the person that is exposed to that art. And there are three categories of art\; bad art\, good art and great art. Bad art will elicit no emotional response in the person that is exposed to it\, i.e.\; a song you hear in an elevator and it does nothing to you\, a picture on a wall that gives you the same emotional response as if the wall had been blank\, a movie that chews up time. Good art will make you feel an emotion that you have felt before\; you see a picture of a forest and you remember the last time you went fishing with your dad\, you hear a song about love and you remember the last time you were in love. Great art will make you feel an emotion you have never felt before\; seeing the pieta\, the world famous sculpture by

Michelangelo\, can cause someone to feel the pain of losing a child even if they've never had one. And when you're trying for these emotions the easiest one to trigger is anger.

Anyone can do it. Go into the street\, throw a rock at someone\, you will make them angry. The emotions of love\, empathy and laughter are much harder to trigger\, but since they operate on a deeper level\, they bring a much greater reward.

SUMMARY:The Pink Floyd Experience
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4427340/ ] More than just a flawless recreation of the legendary songs that spanned decades in their appeal. The Pink Floyd Experience echoes everything that made Pink Floyd one of rock & roll’s greatest icons\, from the unforgettable hits (“Money\,” “Another Brick in the Wall”) to the 200\,000 watt light show\, full quadraphonic sound and special effects.

Tom Quinn: Band leader\, lead guitarist\, and relentless crusader for all things "Pink Floyd". In 1973\, The Dark Side Of The Moon was released. That same year Tom bought his first guitar\, and started his first band. From day one\, his chief mentor was David Gilmour. Tom also cites Joe Walsh and Leslie West as big influences on his playing. He dates the musical roots of PFX back to 1994\, and Pink Floyd's Division Bell tour stop in San Diego. The band hit the stage in April 1995\, and went on to garner many San Diego Music Awards from 1999 to 2003.

Gus Beaudoin was born on May 3\, 1952\, and started playing bass guitar at age 13. With almost 40 years of musical experience to draw from\, Gus is well-respected by his peers for his talent and tenacity. Players such as Tim Bogart\, Chris Squire\, Stanley Clarke\, and also early Motown and the Monkees were big influences on Gus's powerful and rock-solid style. Gus has toured across the United States and Canada playing many styles of music\, including rock\, country\, jazz\, disco\, and classical. Gus and Tom Quinn joined up in 1997 and started playing Floyd music anywhere someone would let them set-up their equipment\, out of pure love for the music of Pink Floyd.

Graham Heath\, lead vocalist for PFX\, grew up in Sherwood Forest\, Nottinghamshire\, England\, and has been singing and recording for the last ten years in the United States and Europe. Graham has enjoyed working alongside artists such as Waz Not Woz\, producer Bruce Forrest\, Jack Bruce of Cream\, and was invited to record by Bill Wyman in the Rolling Stones mobile studio. Recently Graham founded and was signed to One/UK/USA record and publishing company. Recognized as a natural live performer\, Graham is an inspiration and welcome addition to PFX.

Jesse Molloy\, saxophone player based out of San Diego is a dynamic complement to the PFX sound. Jesse tours nationally with his group\, On The One\, which is lead by Jesse and PFX drummer John Staten. Jesse has toured internationally with several acts\, including the Giant People Ensemble\, and the Jamaican National Orchestra. Molloy has shared stages with many including Karl Denson and the Wailers. He has studied under the great Charles McPherson and Rhett Bender.

John Cox has been playing keyboards since age 9\, and is self-taught. In 1976 he bought a Moog synthesizer and formed the space music group Embryo with synthesist Steve Roach and was hooked on creating atmospheres and textures with sound. John cites Jan Hammer\, Beethoven\, Carl Stalling\, and Frank Zappa as his major influences. He has also played keys in the YES tribute band Roundabout\, and the Jethro Tull tribute Heavy Horses. John resides in San Diego\, California\, and in his spare time he loves to ride his GSX-R and Supermoto bikes at track days with his two sons.

John Staten\, with no formal training\, began playing drums in church at age 5. Heavily influenced by a musical family\, he started touring at age 20 with various funk bands such as Giant People\, and Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe (KDTU). At age 28 he tours nationally with his own band On The One along side of Jesse Molloy\, PFX own saxophonist. Within the last 8 years\, Staten has been able to play with artist such as The Allman Brothers Band\, Lenny Kravitz\, the Wailers and many others.

With an incredible Light and LASER rig synched with a serious Quad sound reproduction system this is an must see/hear audiophile event!

SUMMARY:Peking Acrobats
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4427307/ ] SPECIAL PRESENTATION

“At no time have we seen anything like the Peking Acrobats! Feats of clowning\, dexterity\, grace\, and strength rippled from the stage... one was left waterlogged in wonder.” — Chicago Tribune

Since their debut in 1986\, THE PEKING ACROBATS® have redefined audience perceptions of Chinese acrobatics. They perform daring maneuvers atop a precarious pagoda of chairs\; they are experts at treacherous feats of daring\, trick-cycling\, precision tumbling\, somersaulting\, and gymnastics. They defy gravity with amazing displays of contortion\, flexibility\, and control. They push the envelope of human possibility with astonishing juggling dexterity and incredible balancing feats\, showcasing tremendous skill and ability. They are masters of agility and grace. Accompanied by live musicians skillfully playing traditional Chinese instruments and high-tech special effects that coalesce with the music\, featuring the Acrobats awe-inspiring feats\, an exuberant entertainment event appears before your eyes\, featuring all the excitement and festive pageantry of a Chinese Carnival infused with explosive energy!

Many of the magnificent acts we see today\, despite their sophistication\, were performed in ancient times. The history of Chinese acrobatics is rich in tradition and dates back over 2000 years. Throughout the history of China the acrobatic arts flourished\, but in varying degrees. Originally\, court entertainments were formal and monotonous\, quite the opposite of the lively\, folk arts of the people. And\, it did all begin with folk arts: tumbling\, juggling ordinary household objects and balancing. Common games of the people\, such as “Rang Hitting\,” or throwing a small wooden strip the size and shape of a shoe sole at a target\, developed accuracy. Modern day Whip Feats are traced back to this game. Myth and religion also influenced the acrobatic performing arts. The Lion Dance is Buddhist in origin. The lion was seen as the reincarnation of a woman\, who was teased into revealing her true identity. This dance was a symbol of spiritual renewal and was also revered for dispelling bad luck.

Eventually\, however\, the excitement of the acrobat’s amazing feats caught and held the attention of the ruling classes. Acrobatic performers were routinely invited to the court to entertain and impress visiting dignitaries. The varied acts of tumbling\, singing\, dancing and juggling became known as “The Hundred Entertainments” during the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD). Records of acrobatic acts can be found as early as the Ch'in Dynasty (221 B.C. - 207 B.C.) and Chinese acrobats through the ages have continued to perfect what has become an evolving folk art form. THE PEKING ACROBATS ability to perform the astounding is rooted in centuries of this Chinese history and folk art.

Tradition demands that each generation of acrobats add its own improvements and embellishments. Generations of families have carried on this highly acclaimed and popular tradition. Children begin training at a young age and adhere to a rigorous training schedule which they follow for the rest of their lives. Today the acrobat in China is considered an artist. Because of the unusual and difficult nature of the feats involved\, high honor is conferred upon those skilled enough to become acrobats\; in China\, an acrobat can be considered the Chinese equivalent of an American opera star. It is telling that the Chinese acrobatic tradition just gets stronger\, due to the continued innovation of the artists and the endless enthusiasm from their adoring public.

THE PEKING ACROBATS have been featured on numerous television shows and celebrity-studded TV Specials including THE WAYNE BRADY SHOW\, THAT’S INCREDIBLE\, and ABC’s WIDE WORLD OF SPORTS\, NBC’s RING IN THE NEW YEAR HOLIDAY SPECIAL. They have also appeared on NICKELODEON’S hit show Unfabulous and ELLEN’S REALLY BIG SHOW\, hosted by comedian and talk show host\, Ellen DeGeneres. They set the world record for the Human Chair Stack on FOX’s GUINNESS BOOK PRIMETIME TV show where they astounded audiences with their bravery and dexterity as they balanced six people precariously atop six chairs 21 feet up in the air without safety lines! Internationally\, they have appeared on the ARTISTGALLA\, a benefit show that was filmed live at the Drammens Theatre in Oslo\, Norway. THE PEKING ACROBATS are also making the Hollywood scene on the silver screen as former company members were featured in director Stephen Soderbergh’s hit film Ocean’s 11\, playing with Hollywood’s elite such as Julia Roberts\, Brad Pitt and George Clooney. Qin Shaobo\, an alumnus of THE PEKING ACROBATS\, appeared in that film’s two blockbuster sequels\, Ocean’s 12\, and Ocean’s 13. THE PEKING ACROBATS were also the featured performers at the glamorous Hollywood Premiere Party of Ocean’s 13 and they really impressed the star-studded audience with their incredible acrobatic feats!

THE PEKING ACROBATS are also pleased to announce the tremendous success of their first consumer DVD\, initially released on their 2006 North American Tour and filmed on their 2005 North American Tour as a television special for HDNet. This crystal-clear\, thrilling DVD is available for sale to the public at their performances and on the internet at www.iaipresentations.com. The show\, shot in High Definition format\, has aired many times on HDNet television. THE PEKING ACROBATS® are excited and honored to have been selected by HDNet to participate in such technological innovation\, thereby putting this attraction on the cutting edge of modern technology.

THE PEKING ACROBATS continue to perform for Symphony Concert audiences across America. Fans will recall that this milestone in their career was achieved when they made their debut at the Hollywood Bowl. They performed as part of the Hollywood Bowl’s Fireworks Season Finale\, where the company blended their unique brand of acrobatics with the majestic sound of the 100-piece Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. The acrobats infused Bowl audiences with their powerful maneuvers in a multi-cultural\, multi-media spectacular. Between the ‘fireworks’ on stage and the fireworks in the air\, audiences experienced theatrical alchemy at its finest! Concerts such as these have led to many other performances with Symphony Orchestras across the US such as the San Francisco Symphony\, the San Diego Symphony\, the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra\, to name a few.

THE PEKING ACROBATS have returned to the Hollywood Bowl in three separate outing\, most recently performing with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra in September of 2008 with Maestro Tom Wilkins conducting. They were thrilled at the opportunity to play this prestigious venue once again. The Hollywood Bowl audiences so warmly received them\, it was like a homecoming celebration for the performers. Clearly\, THE PEKING ACROBATS are now bringing their unique artistry to a completely new audience with the Symphony Concerts and will continue to do so in the future.

THE PEKING ACROBATS have also expanded their reach into the European market. For the past three years\, they have toured throughout the Continent and visited such countries as Italy\, Belgium\, the Netherlands\, and Switzerland. Several of these countries they have traveled to two and three times over\, visiting many exciting cities such as Milan\, Bologna\, and Naples in Italy\, Brugge in Belgium\, as well as Amsterdam and the Haag in the Netherlands.

Their affinity for and popularity with European audiences does not end there\, however\, as in December of 2008\, THE PEKING ACROBATS once again returned to Europe\, this time for their Fourth European Tour. Here\, again\, is another triumph for THE PEKING ACROBATS as they share their incredible talents\, abilities\, and culture with ever-widening audiences\, building their reputation as the finest Chinese acrobatic troupe in the world! On all of these European tours\, the performers have endeared themselves to the European audiences and so it is no surprise that they are asked to return there by popular demand\, again and again. The warmth and appreciation of the European people makes THE PEKING ACROBATS feel right at home and the future holds many more such successful tours for THE PEKING ACROBATS’ much to the delight of their growing numbers of European fans!

A performance by THE PEKING ACROBATS\, therefore\, brings with it the opportunity to view the epitome of a rich and ancient folk art tradition\, highlighted by today’s technology melding the ancient and traditional with the modern wonders of the 21st Century. Therefore\, it is with much pride and pleasure that we embark on the Twenty Second North American Tour of THE PEKING ACROBATS®. So\, sit back\, relax\, and enjoy as our performers reveal to you their mastery of a fascinating and ancient art form\, thousands of years in the making!

As the Seattle Times reports: "Nearly everything THE PEKING ACROBATS did last night was amazing - and stunning\, and breathtaking and WOW!" and Clive Davis of the New York Post sums it up thusly: "THE PEKING ACROBATS [are] pushing the envelope of human possibility…Pure artistry!"

SUMMARY:Mark Knopfler - Get lucky World Tour
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4428325/ ] -
Mark Knopfler - An Audiophile event!

So as we approach the end of the first decade of the 21st century\, and other multi-million-sellers nudge their careers forward at a snail's pace\, Knopfler prepares to release his fifth studio album of the decade\, and it's another jewel.

Get Lucky\, recorded at his award-winning British Grove Studios in west London and co-produced with longtime cohorts Chuck Ainlay and Guy Fletcher\, is a beautifully crafted exploration of a lifetime of musical roots\; fluently combining folk and blues with his original songwriting\, the whole containing personalised British ingredients and vivid observational lyricism.

Gratefully seizing on this elongated hot streak of productivity\, the Grammy Award-winning guitar hero of more than 30 years' standing displays his usual flair for understatement. "I just keep turning up\," he says. "That's exactly what it is\, and I think you appreciate it a lot more as you get older. I used to take it for granted when I was a kid. I don't think I respected whatever talent I had enough - I had to learn that. So now I just get behind the plough. That's how things happen.

"I can be easily distracted\," he smiles. "That's what the teachers always said about me. But even with that I still manage to be writing away. So I'm still the ragpicker in a way. I've got these things that are coming together\, and that are together\, and recording too much stuff as well. There's no shortage of stuff hanging around. I could go back in the studio now if the lads were here."

Reinstalled at British Grove\, the regular team soon conjured an atmosphere of relaxed artistry. "Between us we get there\, that's part of the fun of it\," says Mark. "Also I think there's a lot of mutual respect." This time\, "the lads" were augmented by feted musicians Phil Cunningham and Michael McGoldrick who linked up with the most recent addition to Mark's lineup\, Scottish multi-instrumentalist John McCusker. "They've played before\," laughs Knopfler admiringly.

If Get Lucky was a novel\, it'd be another of Knopfler's page-turners\, full of characters who leap out of the lyrics\, like the Glasgow lorry-driver of the opening track 'Border Reiver\,' or the fairground worker and fruit picker of the title song\, or his heartfelt remembrance of the great ships in 'So Far From The Clyde\,' or real life tributes to a master guitar-maker in 'Monteleone' and the lost uncle he never knew in 'Piper To The End.'

Those and other themes and characters on the album are viewed through the prism of Mark's childhood\, spent in Glasgow until he was eight\, when the family moved to Newcastle. "Do we ever get away from our childhoods?" he muses. "Some of the things we're attracted to when we're very small stay with us all our lives."

That's certainly true in his case. "At the bottom of Salters Road in Newcastle\, there was a little record shop\," he remembers. "One day there was this Fender Stratocaster in the window\, and it was just a thing of magic. It was literally nose to the window. I think I was still in short trousers\, and that's it\, a little boy coming home from school\, being completely fascinated by it. I still cross the road now to look into a guitar shop.

"That's what sustains you\, and probably what makes me go on is the thrill of trying to make something\, just getting something made. That's it. Obviously things do change a little bit\, we do grow up to a certain extent\, but I try to keep those bits of me young."

The autobiographical thread running through Get Lucky is exemplified by the title track. "The first itinerant person I ever met would sing in soul bands in winter\, then work part-time in fairgrounds or 'go pick fruit down south' when the weather turned warm\," explains Knopfler. "I was about 15 years old\, stuck in school and envious. 'Get Lucky' came from him and other travelling characters I went on to meet in places I'd find myself working short-term\, like farms\, warehouses\, building sites\, before I got lucky with my songs."

'Border Reiver' takes its title from the raiders who ran the Anglo-Scottish borders centuries ago. "It's about the hard life of a lorry driver at the end of the '60s. We lived near the Albion works in Glasgow and I'd see drivers dressed like long riders in goggles and trench coats taking out the chassis to test them before they were fitted with their cabs and beds. Albions were known for their quality and 'Sure As The Sunrise' was the company motto."

The song also provides a thematic link to one from the 1978 album that helped make Knopfler's name. "In Newcastle we lived near the A1\, the nation's main north-south route\," he says\, "and at eight years old I was starting to know the liveries of the major haulage companies as their lorries came through town. In the hitch-hiking years of my teens and early 20s\, many kind-hearted lorry drivers stopped to pick me up. The song 'Southbound Again' on the first Dire Straits album is about that\, going up and down the country and my blossoming romance with London."

On an album where the vibrancy of the characters is matched by the radiance of the instrumentation\, the closing piece is the moving 'Piper To The End\,' written for Mark's uncle Freddie. He was a piper of the 1st Battalion\, Tyneside Scottish\, the Black Watch\, Royal Highland Regiment\, who carried his pipes into action and was killed with them at Ficheux\, near Arras in May 1940\, aged just 20.

"I didn't know him\, of course\, but I was close to my uncle Kingsley\, my mum's brother. He first taught me to play the boogie-woogie piano\, and Freddie was Kingsley's older brother. The pipes always made sense to me\, and growing up in Glasgow as well as Newcastle\, in my grandmother's home\, there were Jimmy Shand records\, so the sound of Celtic music always seems familiar to me."

Now Knopfler and the band are looking forward to hitting the road once again in 2010. "It's like being captain of a little fighting ship really\, and I enjoy the team thing of being on the road\, I enjoy being with the crew. I suppose one of the reasons I like it so much is that I know it's not going to be a year-long thing."

Amid the new material\, when the audiences call for the songs that became part of all our lives\, he will relish it. "The thing about the old Straits songs is that they are signposts for people's lives. Obviously I'll play them differently here and there to keep it alive and meaningful to me\, and away from a cabaret thing. But there are times\, like the twiddly bits at the end of 'Sultans\,' if you don't do your twiddly bits\, the world's not right for people. I like playing the old songs\, I wrote them and people like to hear them\, it's as simple as that."

In the end\, Mark Knopfler thrives on never taking the audience for granted. "I think there's still a place for the game that I'm playing\," he muses. "It's not on the same pitch as a lot of other people are playing\, mine's over here and theirs is over there\, but people still want to hear crafted songs."
