SUMMARY:Amy Goodman: Breaking the Sound Barrier
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4842961/ ] KPFA Radio and Democracy Now! present

America's foremost investigative journalist\, Democracy Now! host\, and New York Times best-selling author Amy Goodman discusses her new book Breaking the Sound Barrier

Introduced by book editor and Democracy Now! Producer\, Denis Moynihan

Tickets: www.brownpapertickets.com/event/88466 phone order: 800-838.3006\, and at independent bookstores

 Event benefits KPFA Radio
 Information: www.kpfa.org/events or 510.848.6767x611

"Amy Goodman has taken investigative journalism to new heights of exciting\, informative\, and probing analysis."-Noam Chomsky

"You can learn more of the truth about Washington and the world from one week of Amy Goodman's Democracy Now! (www.democracynow.org) than from a month of Sunday morning talk shows. Make that a year of Sunday talk shows. That's because Amy\, as you will discover on every page of this book\, knows the critical question for journalists is how close they are to the truth\, not how close they are to power."--From the Preface by Bill Moyers

Amy Goodman\, award-winning host of the daily internationally broadcast radio and television program Democracy Now!\, breaks through the corporate media's lies\, sound bites\, and silence in this wide-ranging new collection of articles. In place of the usual suspects-the "experts" who\, in Goodman's words\, "know so little about so much\, explain the world to us\, and get it so wrong"-this accessible\, lively collection allows the voices the corporate media exclude and ignore to be heard loud and clear.

Amy Goodman is an award-winning investigative journalist and syndicated columnist\, author and the host/executive producer of Democracy Now! airing on nearly 800 stations worldwide. Goodman is the first journalist to receive the Right Livelihood Award\, widely known as the 'Alternative Nobel Prize.' Goodman is the co-author of three New York Times bestsellers: Standing Up to the Madness\, Static\, and The Exception to the Rulers.

SUMMARY:Beyond Microfinance
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4841009/ ] Silicon Valley Microfinance Network presents "Franchising in Microfinance." While microfinance has helped local entrepreneurs expand their businesses several limitations have become apparent. A good portion of microfinance clients are "forced entrepreneurs" who have no alternative for generating income. In addition\, only a small number of microenterprises ever grow into small or medium sized enterprises (SMEs) that offer significantly more job opportunities for non-entrepreneurs. Finally\, financing SMEs in a sustainable\, scalable way has proven to be fairly elusive.

Is the franchise model an answer to these challenges? Proven\, turnkey solutions with the potential to scale with support from the franchisor would seem to address these issues. Are there examples of successful\, sustainable microfranchises? What are the key elements for success? What challenges have been encountered in the execution of a micro-franchise strategy?

David Lehr and Chuck Slaughter bring their rich\, practical experiences in micro-franchising to answer these questions and others.

David Lehr is Senior Advisor\, Social Innovations at Mercy Corps where he works to develop sustainable businesses in the failed and fragile states of the world that create employment and economic growth. He has broad experience in microfranchising and is developing a franchise network of sustainable health stores in Guatemala.

Chuck Slaughter\, founded TravelSmith Outfitters and turned it into the #1\, brand in travel wear with $100 million in sales. Now he devotes his time to the world of micro enterprise. Chuck founded Living Goods to build fully sustainable networks of mobile health entrepreneurs for defeating the diseases of poverty in Africa. He currently serves on the boards of Three Day Blinds\, BRAC-USA\, Living Goods and The Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation\, and is a member of the Initiative for Global Development and Technoserve.

SUMMARY:Potluck and screening of the final two parts of 'Rethink Afghanistan'
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4877963/ ] The currency of the issue and our members' expressed level of concern at our last two events have both informed our decision to show the rest of the latest documentary film by Robert Greenwald\, "Rethink Afghanistan." On Sunday\, November 22 we will\, as with our September event\, begin at 5:30 PM with a potluck dinner\, and follow with more of this remarkable film.

Back in September only the first few parts of the film had been released. Rather than wait\, we chose to show what we had in order to bring the issue of the Afghanistan war to San Mateo Peace Action's front burner. Peace Action West Political Director Rebecca Griffin's October talk complemented the film's message with more details and suggestions for channeling our activism. On November 22 we will "finish watching" the film and have another open comment period - to hear from each other and further explore what we can do both individually and collectively.

Part 5 of the film is called "Women of Afghanistan\," and raises questions about whether this war can\, as advertised by many of its boosters\, liberate or help Afghani women. Part 6\, simply called "Security\," features ex-CIA agents making the case that there is no victory to be won Afghanistan. We have thus far avoided showing a segment called "Civilian Casualties" because of its graphic images. All of the segments (and various fact sheets) can be found by logging on to www.rethink Afghanistan.com.

And on Sunday November 22\, Beck Hall at UUSM will be the place to go to find community and share ideas coming out of the last three months of information we have tried to facilitate about the Afghanistan war. Please also bring a dish to share\; beverages will be on hand for a donation\, and coffee and tea will be as always complimentary. The UUSM is wheelchair accessible.

SUMMARY:2010 Creating Change Conference (CC10)
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/2512128/ ] Creating Change \, the 22nd National Conference on LGBT Equality is the annual National Grassroots Organizing and Skills Building Lesbian\, Gay\, Bisexual\, Transgender Conference sponsored by the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force .

Each year the conference is held in a different region of the United States\, attracting at least 2\,000 to 3\,000 attendees from all over the country and is considered a unique environment where activists and leaders come together from diverse places and backgrounds to create a unique community that is both strengthening and inspiring to the participants. Since 1988\, Creating Change has been the opportunity for thousands of committed people to develop and hone their skills\, celebrate victories\, build community\, and to be inspired by visionaries of our LGBT movement and other movements for justice and equality.

The primary goal of the Creating Change Conference is to build political power from the ground up to secure our overarching goal of full equality\, social justice and dignity for lesbian\, gay\, bisexual and transgender people in the United States. Over the five days of the Creating Change Conference the conference program presents a dozen day-long institutes\, sophisticated trainings in the Academy for Leadership and Action\, approximately 130 workshops and caucus sessions\, keynote plenary sessions\, film screenings\, meetings\, receptions\, social events\, and a multitude of opportunities for attendees to meet and learn from each other.

  ---------------------
And while there please join us at the Bisexual/Pansexual/Fluid Organizing Institute (Allies encouraged to attend! Help make your group/community more friendly/inclusive) All Day Program

Spend a focused\, fun\, productive day with bi/pan/fluid leaders to learn how to grow inclusive and friendly groups and communities at the local\, regional and national levels. You’ll identify issues\, brainstorm solutions to challenges\, set goals\, pinpoint strategies\, develop media skills/campaigns and special projects\, target funding\, learn a little history (BiNet USA turns 20 and the Bisexual Resource Center is 25) and network with others. Plus it won’t all be work: we’re planning some playful socializing surprises in a supportive\, safe environment. Yes\, you can come out as bisexual\, fluid\, pansexual\, queer-identified or just plain-old friendly! We’re especially eager to train younger activists\, elders\, people of color\, and folks who don’t feel they “quite fit in” with other more mainstream gay/lesbian groups or otherwise. Help plan and lead the next wave of queer activism!

  Facilitators include: Angel Fabian\, Denise Penn\, Ellyn Ruthstrom\, Estraven\, Faith Cheltenham\, Gary North\, Luigi Ferrer\, Matt Goodman\, Penelope Williams\, and Robyn Ochs

And between sessions please make sure to stop by the Bisexual/Fluid/Pansexual Hospitality Suite . As place to relax\, meet\, chat and network with people from around the country.

  ---------------------
Creating Change is a wonderful (as well as a useful & informative) not to be missed experience that EVERYONE should try to attend at least once.
