SUMMARY:August 2008 Workshop: Mobile Website Usability
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/933117/ ] Mobile Website Usability
Brands on the web live and die by the quality of the user experience. As the web expands from the laptop to the handheld\, the rules change and the game gets harder. To develop a meaningful and intuitive brand experience on the mobile web\, designers\, technologists\, and business owners must consider new constraints on user interactions\, and account for them in innovative ways.

As the mobile web matures\, we see more and more people with their mobile devices in hand\, searching for hotel rooms\, reading the news\, or just playing video games. People are more connected with their mobile phone today than any other electronic device they use.

But how do you connect with users through mobile web sites and create exceptional experiences that are both functional and captivating?

During 2007\, Molecular conducted a unique research project which sought to explore\, analyze\, and understand how users are interacting with the mobile web. More specifically\, this exercise looked to understand what users expect from their applications\, identify common usability mistakes\, and recognize emerging design patterns in the mobile Internet. This presentation will share some of Molecular's findings\, and discuss the impact for companies seeking to promote their brand on the mobile web. Usability expert Evan Gerber will provide insight on what these findings mean for the future of the mobile web and how you can apply it your business and improve you mobile marketing success.

      Attendees will learn:
      * The common weaknesses of the mobile interface\, and how to avoid them
      * Best practices for creating an engaging and memorable interface on handheld devices
      * Critical differences between the mobile web and traditional web experiences
      * Common problems inherent in current mobile design
      * How users perform tasks on handheld devices
      * The difference between miniaturization and mobilization

Speaker: Evan Gerber\, Senior Consultant\, User Experience\, Molecular

SUMMARY:Chris Carlsson - Nowtopia!
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/945543/ ] Chris Carlsson: Nowtopia!
      Saturday\, August 23 - 7:00PM

Chris Carlsson is a Renaissance San Franciscan. The Bay Guardian named him a true local hero because of so many vital areas where he puts his visionary thoughts and energies into serious actions for the better of us all. He is an initiator of Critical Mass\, he is the heart rate of Counter Pulse\, he directs and edits Shaping San Francisco\, he has edited four collections of political and historical essays. His most recent book is After The Deluge\, a utopian novel of post-economic San Francisco. He was one of the original founders and long-time editor of Processed World magazine. So he's not only really smart and engaging\, but he's utterly affable and inspiring.

His new book\, Nowtowpia uncovers resistance and rebellion amidst fractions of a slowly recomposing working class in America. Rarely self-identifying as mere ‘workers\,’ people from all walks of life are doing incredible amounts of work in their “free” “non-work” time. This unpaid work is creating immediate practical improvements in daily life. More interesting still\, these myriad initiatives constitute a more thorough-going refusal of politics and economics as usual.

Outlaw bicycling\, urban permaculture\, biofuels\, free software\, even the Burning Man festival\, are windows into a scarcely visible social transformation that challenges politics as we know it. People are taking back their time and technological know-how from the market and in small under-the-radar ways\, are making life better right now.

Save the Eckert Tolle for later and come see Chris Carlsson now. You'll be happy you did.
Who knows what positive action you take could inspire a critical mass?

SUMMARY:Robert Axelrod - Actor and Voice Over Actor will appear at con-X-live
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/994300/ ] Robert Axelrod has carved a career in show business that runs the gamut. Born and raised in New York City\, he did commercials and theater as a child and teen\, eventually ending up in the Soho Avant-garde Theater scene in a show called “Little Trips”\, then Off-Broadway in a play called “The Destroyers”. Axelrod left acting for the world of music. He spent eight years as a working rock musician playing electric bass and singing in folk\, rock\, and soul bands. Music brought him to Los Angeles where he decided to return to acting\, a decision he never regrets.

Since then\, Mr. Axelrod has appeared in over thirty feature films including four with Charles Bronson\, the Sci-Fi hit remake “The Blob” with Kevin Dillon and Shawnee Smith”\, “The Last Shot” with Alec Baldwin and Matthew Broderick\, and many others. Television appearances include guest star roles on “Amazing Stories”\, “Star Trek Voyager”\, and “The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers”. He also starred in the Michael Jackson music video “Stranger in Moscow”.

Mr. Axelrod is also a busy voice over artist. He is the voice of Lord Zedd and Finster on the “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers”. The Lord Zedd voice is one of the most recognizable character voices around. He voiced Armadillomon and Wizradmon on “Digimon\, Microchip\, The Punisher’s sidekick\, on “Spiderman”\, Rico on “Robotech”\, and has voiced countless Anime features including “Akira”\, “The Big O”\, “Cowboy Bebop”\, “Brain Scratch”\, et al. As Lord Zedd\, he starred in both the first Power Rangers feature film and the wildly popular live show that toured the country. He was a regular character on Saban Entertainment’s “Wowser” series (as Ratso Catso)\, “Journey To The Heart of the World” (as Scarface)\, “Hallo Spencer” (as Elmer)\, and more. He just finished narrating the mockumentary “Safety First: The Rise of Women”.

SUMMARY:ROFLThing - San Francisco
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/917054/ ] It was a classic story as old as time: college kids grow up online\, decide that it'd be a great idea to throw a internet culture conference\, and unleash sheer ridiculousness upon the world.

Back in April 2008\, we put on ROFLCon 2008 -- the first internet culture conference devoted to discussing what makes memes work\, why they work\, and where its all going (and then throwing a big-ass rocking party with the internet celebs themselves). It was a kickass time.

We figured we'd keep doing this as long as it remains awesome (and it still is)\, so we're already hard at work scheming to put together internet culture events into next year. This will be the place for all the breaking news on how they're coming along.

Needless to say\, these might be the most important gatherings since the fall of the tower of Babel.

      --
       Schedule as of 7/18:
5:30 PM — Introductions\, then Andy Baio (Waxy.org) on “Star Wars Kid and the Cult of Unwilling Celebrity”

6:10 PM — Ben Huh (Founder\, I Can Has Cheezburger)\, on “Microhumor and The State of the LOL”

6:50 — Sean O’Steen (Founder\, Twitter Fail Whale Fan Club) on “Love and the Cetacean Nation”

7:30 — (one last unannounced talk)

      8:00 - 10:00 — ROFLDrinks Open Bar!

10:00 — The Mighty transforms into a Dance Party. Rockage ensues.
