Also on display will be evocative images by 15 New Orleans high school students who took part in National Geographic's Photo Camp 2006\, a photography workshop in which students\, mentored by a National Geographic photographer\, go on assignment to document their communities. The exhibit features poignant images of the Lower 9th Ward and the French Quarter. A highlight of the exhibit is a piano from the home of Louisiana rock 'n' roll legend Fats Domino. He escaped rising floodwaters in his New Orleans home and gained national attention when he was missing for several days after the storm. His ruined piano was retrieved by the Louisiana State Museum for stabilization and display in a permanent hurricane exhibition scheduled for early 2008.

DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4762746/ ] The Museum's C-47\, on display in the Louisiana Memorial Pavilion\, was purchased from a private owner in Hondo\, Texas\, with funds donated by Lulu and Paul Hilliard of Lafayette\, Louisiana. The C-47 carried up to 6\,000 pounds of cargo. It could easily handle an assembled jeep or a 37mm cannon. As the troop transport it carried 38 Marines\, soldiers or sailors in full combat gear. As a medical airlift airplane it accommodated 14 stretchers and three nurses. The C-47 "096" was present at major airborne missions including D-Day Normandy and Operations Market Garden and Varsity. The airplane was restored to its operable condition and is a cornerstone of the Museum's historic items.

The photo collection consists of around 10\,000 photographs. The bulk of the photos feature the local music scene from about 1950 onward\, focusing on traditional and Dixieland performers. The Jazz Collection has close to 10\,000 recordings in virtually every format ever used\, from piano rolls to digital tape. The bulk of the film holdings is several hundred rolls of various sizes donated in 1978 by local TV news cameraman Don Perry. The pictorial collection consists primarily of posters\, plus paintings and other artworks. Many posters are from the New Orleans Jazz Club\, and pertain to the concerts they have been staging since 1950. The Jazz Collection has hundreds of examples of sheet music\, from late 19th-century ragtime to popular songs of the 40s and 50s.

Also on display will be evocative images by 15 New Orleans high school students who took part in National Geographic's Photo Camp 2006\, a photography workshop in which students\, mentored by a National Geographic photographer\, go on assignment to document their communities. The exhibit features poignant images of the Lower 9th Ward and the French Quarter. A highlight of the exhibit is a piano from the home of Louisiana rock 'n' roll legend Fats Domino. He escaped rising floodwaters in his New Orleans home and gained national attention when he was missing for several days after the storm. His ruined piano was retrieved by the Louisiana State Museum for stabilization and display in a permanent hurricane exhibition scheduled for early 2008.

The C-47 carried up to 6\,000 pounds of cargo. It could easily handle an assembled jeep or a 37mm cannon. As the troop transport it carried 38 Marines\, soldiers or sailors in full combat gear. As a medical airlift airplane it accommodated 14 stretchers and three nurses. The C-47 "096" was present at major airborne missions including D-Day Normandy and Operations Market Garden and Varsity. The airplane was restored to its operable condition and is a cornerstone of the Museum's historic items.

DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4322189/ ] In December 2007\, more than two years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Lower 9th Ward\, the once-vibrant neighborhood was still silent and razed and the community frustrated by the lack of rebuilding progress. After touring the area and meeting with neighborhood groups and families\, actor Brad Pitt was moved by the injustice he saw to "Make It Right." Pitt created the Make It Right Foundation to help the Lower 9th Ward recover by building 150 affordable\, green high quality design homes in the neighborhood closest to the Industrial Canal levee breach. From Pitt's concept\, a thriving and growing community has grown. Fourteen families now live on the site\, 19 homes are under construction and another 49 families are in process. The first 13 local\, national and international architects who contributed their designs to Make It Right based their work on the traditional New Orleans "shotgun" home. In June 2009\, a second round of 14 architects submitted designs based on traditional New Orleans' "duplexes" (two-family homes). For the first time\, the models of the duplex designs are on display beginning at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans. In addition\, the exhibition will trace the evolution of the first generation of houses from design to finished houses and thriving neighborhood\, and detail the pioneering materials\, processes and technologies being used in the Lower 9th Ward that will benefit communities across America.
