      On 17 May 1649\, three soldiers were executed on Oliver Cromwell’s orders in Burford churchyard\, Oxfordshire. They belonged to a movement popularly known as the Levellers\, with beliefs in civil rights and religious tolerance. During the Civil War\, they fought on Parliament’s side\, had at first seen Cromwell as a liberator\, but now saw him as a dictator. They were prepared to fight against him for their ideals and he was determined to crush them. Over 300 of them were captured by Cromwell’s troops and locked up in Burford church. Three were led out into the churchyard to be shot as ringleaders.

There have been many (well one or two) requests to put the April InstalFest back a month to May\, so that is what we are going to do this time.
      Another resaon for the date change is that the next release 8.04 is a bit special as its the new LTS (long term support) which will eventually replace 6.06 LTS.
      Also\, as usual\, we'll be heading to the Sanbar afterwards for informal banter and blather.
      ManLUG normally meets at 14:00 hrs on the third Saturday of the month with the odd exception like December which would be too close to the Christmas festivities. We try and get two willing volunteers to give a talk for each meeting\, but sometimes this is hard work. Installfests are usually held around twice a year. (April/October)
      As a matter of policy\, the University have asked us to bring some photo identification to show the porters if we are asked. Please remember that the University is kind enough to let us use their facilities without a fee\, so perhaps we can agree to this gracefully.

EGEE operates the world’s largest multi-science production Grid infrastructure. As the flagship project of the European Commission\, EGEE unites regional and national Grid infrastructures into a seamless whole\, able to support scientists in their research 24/7. The users of the EGEE Grid are organised into Virtual Organizations\, allowing them to share resources\, codes\, data and common tools specific to their fields of study. At present\, more than 200 Virtual Organizations make use of EGEE\, in fields from High Energy Physics and Biomedicine to Earth Sciences\, Astronomy\, Gaming and Finance. The EGEE infrastructure includes 250 sites in 48 countries spanning Europe\, Russia\, Asia and the Americas and handles more than 100\,000 application executions per day. EGEE actively pursues interoperability with collaborating projects in the USA (Open Science Grid and TeraGrid)\, Japan (NAREGI) as well as India and China. 
      Coming to the end of its second phase\, EGEE is looking toward the future of the programme and of Grid computing in general. The third phase of the EGEE project is planned to start in May’08 with increased support for new scientific disciplines joining the Grid and preparing for the transition to a permanent\, sustainable infrastructure.
       About CERN 
      CERN\, the European Organization for Nuclear Research (http://www.cern.ch) is one of the world’s largest and most respected centres for scientific research. Its business is fundamental physics\, finding out what the Universe is made of and how it works. At CERN\, the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments are used to study the basic constituents of matter — the fundamental particles. By studying what happens when these particles collide\, physicists learn about the laws of Nature. The instruments used at CERN are particle accelerators and detectors.       Tim Berners-Lee\, a scientist at CERN\, invented the World Wide Web (WWW) in 1990. The Web\, as it is affectionately called\, was originally conceived and developed to meet the demand for automatic information sharing between scientists working in different universities and institutes all over the world. CERN is not an isolated laboratory\, but rather a focus for an extensive community that now includes about 60 countries and about 8000 scientists. Although these scientists typically spend some time on the CERN site\, they usually work at universities and national laboratories in their home countries. Good contact is clearly essential. The basic idea of the WWW was to merge the technologies of personal computers\, computer networking and hypertext into a powerful and easy to use global information system. 
       Biography of the Speaker 
      Dr Jones is the project director of the European Commission financed EGEE project\, which provides a production grid facility for e-Science in Europe. Previous experience in the grid arena includes his mandate as technical coordinator and then deputy project leader for the EU DataGrid project (2001-2004)\, the flagship grid project of the European Commission in its 5th Framework Programme. Following a B.Sc. (Hons) in Computer Science from Staffordshire University\, Bob joined CERN in 1986 as a software developer with the information technology department providing support for the physics experiments running on the LEP particle accelerator. He completed his PhD thesis in Computer Science at Sunderland University while working at CERN and has been involved in several research projects for the future LHC accelerator. He is a member of the ATLAS physics experiment collaboration and has previously been responsible for the online software group. Dr Jones has lectured on software engineering related subjects at events such as the CERN School of computing.

      Well get ready to say 'YES WE CAN!' because at next week's FlashBrighton Sussex University's Genial-Genius-of-Genetic-Algorithm Ollie Glass drops in for a flying visit. Along with his good friend Math.random() Ollie will show us how simple it is to create Genetic Algorithms - or "GA's" to those in the business - and we'll all code-along with him in an openly-creative-positivity-workshop-nice kinda way\, so we'll all go away at the end of the night with a simple-sample "GA" to study. Or those of us with laptops will anyway!  :)
      Ollie will code using Processing ( processing.org ) and you can use whatever language you fancy \, be it ActionScript\, Processing\, Java or whatever else. Our own Seb Lee will be live coding in AS3 alongside Ollie on a separate projector... if he can get one!

      Fragments is a collection of nineteen quarter life-size bronze sculptures by Canadian artist Blake. The proceeds from the entire collection of Fragments are being donated to fund landmine clearance through the United Nations Association programs Adopt-A-Minefield and No-More-Landmines.
      Blake's shocking\, yet hauntingly beautiful\, sculptures were inspired by his experiences in post-war Vietnam where he witnessed the tragedy of landmines. The exhibition's broken bodies speak of the tragic effect of military waste on society. 
      Landmines and unexploded ordnance are a global problem and our generations' legacy. Fragments sculptures are a part of the solution and have already cleared landmines\, cluster bombs and other unexploded weapons from communities and villages in Vietnam. In Angola\, Fragments sculptures have funded equipment to map the location of mine fields.
      Everyday\, at 4 pm during the Fragments show in London\, the sculptor Blake will speak of the social responsibility of the artist and the remnants of war that are his inspiration. 
      A closing party will be held on 29th May from 5pm to 9pm.

Each session is self-contained so you can join us at any stage during the series and attend as few (even one only!) or as many as you would like to.
      The topic for this session is "Leadership is Stewardship (Understanding God's Principles for Financial Stewardship)" (Year 3\, A2).
      There is no charge for attendance and each attendee will be given a workbook/worksheets for the session(s) that they attend.

      The sessions are informal with a strong emphasis on small group discussion and practical application\, all conducted in a fun\, yet serious\, atmosphere (if that makes sense).

He is joined here by a new ensemble featuring three highly talented young Irish artists and the cellist of the Belcea Quartet.
      This suitably macabre yet curiously uplifting ensemble piece is presented alongside Messiaen's hauntingly beautiful Quartet for the End of Time \, one of the most moving and profound works in the chamber repertoire.
