It is used within the framework of the DIR model. The DIR model is used to develop programs for children with special needs based on the developmental level\, individual differences\, and the relationships of the child to care providers. The purpose of Floor Time is to help the child master the six emotional milestones\, one by one\, in sequential order. This presentation outlines Stanley Greenspan's\, MD\, and Serena Weider's\, PhD\, definitive guide to raising a child with special needs\, The Child with Special Needs: Encouraging Intellectual and Emotional Growth. It covers disabilities including autism\, PDD\, language and speech deficits\, Down syndrome\, cerebral palsy and DD\, and offers a new understanding of the nature of these challenges. The program describes specific ways of helping children extend their intellectual and emotional potential\, displaying the unique profile of the individual child. Day 1 - The class will begin with an explanation of the DIR model. It will also demonstrate Floor Time techniques necessary for the child to reach key milestones and to develop new emotional and intellectual capacities. This approach enables parents\, as well as clinicians\, to use seemingly playful interactions to assist children to move up the developmental ladder and often to master creative and abstract thinking. Day 2 - This class will demonstrate the use of sensory processing techniques within the Floor Time approach when providing intervention with children who have disorders of relating and communicating. We will discuss the use of these techniques by both parents and professionals within a variety of settings. Recently\, ten new emotional development levels were identified and will be discussed from Greenspan's newest book\, "The First Idea". PRESENTORS: Dawn Heino\, OTR/L and Molly McBroom\, OTR/L Dawn Heino\, OTR/L\, is a pediatric occupational therapist at the Good Samaritan Children's Therapy Unit. She has worked as a Pediatric OT for 20 years in a variety of settings including: neonatal and pediatric intensive care\, general acute pediatrics\, pediatric rehabilitation\, home health care\, out-patient clinical settings including a feeding clinic\, neonatal follow-up\, early intervention and school based therapy services. She has had extensive training and experience working with children with disabilities including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Molly McBroom\, OTR/L\, is a graduate of the University of Washington and has worked at the Good Samaritan Children's Therapy Unit for 19 years. She has extensive training working with children with developmental delays particularly those with Autism Spectrum Disorder\, physical disabilities and visual dysfunction. She has worked with children ages 0 - 21 years. Molly has completed formal training in Neurodevelopmental Treatment (NDT)\, Sensory Integration (SI) and DIR Floor Time. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Identify the key elements of Floor Time and the DIR model of Intervention Identify the sixteen emotional developmental levels Assess the emotional developmental level of a child Describe the goals/activities pertinent to Floor Time Implement the Floor Time approach with appropriate children in a variety of different environments Utilize the sensory processing approach within the Floor Time model across various disciplines. The DIR model is used to develop programs for children with special needs based on the developmental level\, individual differences\, and the relationships of the child to care providers. The purpose of Floor Time is to help the child master the six emotional milestones\, one by one\, in sequential order. This presentation outlines Stanley Greenspan's\, MD\, and Serena Weider's\, PhD\, definitive guide to raising a child with special needs\, The Child with Special Needs: Encouraging Intellectual and Emotional Growth. It covers disabilities including autism\, PDD\, language and speech deficits\, Down syndrome\, cerebral palsy and DD\, and offers a new understanding of the nature of these challenges. The program describes specific ways of helping children extend their intellectual and emotional potential\, displaying the unique profile of the individual child. Day 1 - The class will begin with an explanation of the DIR model. It will also demonstrate Floor Time techniques necessary for the child to reach key milestones and to develop new emotional and intellectual capacities. This approach enables parents\, as well as clinicians\, to use seemingly playful interactions to assist children to move up the developmental ladder and often to master creative and abstract thinking. Day 2 - This class will demonstrate the use of sensory processing techniques within the Floor Time approach when providing intervention with children who have disorders of relating and communicating. We will discuss the use of these techniques by both parents and professionals within a variety of settings. Recently\, ten new emotional development levels were identified and will be discussed from Greenspan's newest book\, "The First Idea". PRESENTORS: Dawn Heino\, OTR/L and Molly McBroom\, OTR/L Dawn Heino\, OTR/L\, is a pediatric occupational therapist at the Good Samaritan Children's Therapy Unit. She has worked as a Pediatric OT for 20 years in a variety of settings including: neonatal and pediatric intensive care\, general acute pediatrics\, pediatric rehabilitation\, home health care\, out-patient clinical settings including a feeding clinic\, neonatal follow-up\, early intervention and school based therapy services. She has had extensive training and experience working with children with disabilities including those with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Molly McBroom\, OTR/L\, is a graduate of the University of Washington and has worked at the Good Samaritan Children's Therapy Unit for 19 years. She has extensive training working with children with developmental delays particularly those with Autism Spectrum Disorder\, physical disabilities and visual dysfunction. She has worked with children ages 0 - 21 years. Molly has completed formal training in Neurodevelopmental Treatment (NDT)\, Sensory Integration (SI) and DIR Floor Time.
