SUMMARY:The IP Pyramid – copyright in complex creative environments (Module 1 and 2)
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4766172/ ] This event is delivered in two modules covering different aspects of the subject.
 A film or theatre production involves many contributors\, from the script writer to the costume designer to the producer. Each of the various creatives can claim IP rights\, such as copyright\, in their work\, but they won't own the IP of the whole of the production. The result is a work that accumulates IP like a pyramid\, which means that identifying rights' owners and putting appropriate agreements in place can be a daunting task even for an experienced theatre or film producer.
 (Module 1)When: 11.11.09 at 18:00                                                                                                  Where: Waterside Arts Centre\, Waterside Plaza\, Sale\, M33 7ZF
 We will identify the legal framework of complex creative environments and explain which IP rights are involved in a traditional film or theatre production in which many creative professionals collaborate. A legal expert will advise what kind of agreements need to be in place and when best to negotiate terms and conditions with contributors\, such as the script writer or set designer.
 (Module 2)When: 25.11.09 at 18:00
 Where: Waterside Arts Centre\, Waterside Plaza\, Sale\, M33 7ZF This module is all about clearing rights when you are not directly collaborating with the rights owner but would like to use their work for your film or theatre play\, such as a piece of recorded music or photography. How do you identify rights invested in the piece and how can you clear the rights to use safely?
 Admission is free however places are limited. To find out more or to register and book online please visit: http://www.own-it.org/events. These events are organised by Own-it in collaboration with Creative Industries Trafford/Manchester. Both events take place from 6- 9pm with presentations until 8pm\, followed by drinks/networking until 9pm.

SUMMARY:Garuda at Sankeys with SANDER VAN DOORN\, GARETH EMERY + more
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4390954/ ] *** Early bird tickets: coming soon.
 After three totally sold-out events in 2009\, we’re returning to give the year a final send-off with one more Garuda night at Sankeys. We’ve had our work cut out to find a line-up that could match our last two\, but we think we might have just about nailed it.
 Our guest headliner is Sander van Doorn\, who\, to coin a cliché\, really needs no introduction. At no.13 in the current DJ Mag poll\, his meteoric rise over the past few years has seen him go from the king of tech-trance into one of the most globally successful and in-demand DJs on the planet. Collabs with Robbie Williams\, remixes for The Killers and Depeche Mode: SvD’s the real deal and we’re proper excited to have him behind the decks at Sankeys for an exclusive three-hour set in his first Manchester appearance for years.
 Also in the main room is Garuda boss Gareth Emery\, who’s been on fire throughout 2009. After an incredible year both in the studio and behind the decks\, Emery’s blowing up in a big way and there’s no better place to see him than at his own night. After two epic three hour sets at Sankeys so far in 2009\, we think you know what to expect\, although this time he’ll be taking the second slot so be prepared for a more late night uplifting set full of peak time trance and Emery classics. Unmissable stuff.
 After hosting Spektrum in April and August\, Wrong:Format have well and truly made the room their own\, so we’ll be leaving the house music in their more than capable hands once again. They’ll also be joined by a big name guest headliner to fill the boots of the inimitable Fergie – announcement coming soon.
 This time\, we’re also upping the stakes on the production front and are bringing in a dedicated VJ and laser specialist to ensure we get the best out of Sankeys new LED wall and multi-coloured laser. We’re also assured by Sankeys that their much-vaunted room cooling ice cannons WILL be ready\, but we hate promising things that we don’t deliver\, and therefore won’t be confirming this until we’ve seen them with our own eyes\, so we’ll keep you posted. Trust that the usual Garuda production attention to detail will be in place though\, plus official photographers and camera crews to record the night MTV style.
 Keep tuned to this page for official photos and video from our August party which will be dropping shortly. It’s going to be another big one people: see you there!

 Mediating Jazz is a two-day multi-disciplinary conference that brings together the leading researchers in the field of new jazz studies. The conference itself will comprise of four key strands\, each of which addresses the overarching themes of mediation in jazz:
 1. Jazz and the media
 We wish to explore the way in which media representation impacts on jazz discourse. The review panel will welcome papers that examine the way in which jazz is represented through various media from Hollywood film to television documentary\, sleeve notes to journalism.
 2. Performance and the body
 Musicians often promote the performance of jazz as an unmediated experience. We invite papers that interrogate this assumption\, exploring the relationship between performance and different types of mediation. This could include discussions of jazz as a transcendent art or a gendered construct\, as well as examining the mythologies of improvisation\, musicianship and the 'jazz life'\, and the codification of performance practice.
 3. Politics and identity
 Within the jazz mainstream\, the radical politics of the 1960s has arguably been replaced with a sense of homogenised culture\, devoid of explicit race and class issues. This strand explores the role mediation plays in the growth and development of identities alongside the promotion/subversion of political messages.
 4. Jazz cultures and narratives
 This strand explores jazz as both narrative trope and changing cultural signifier. We welcome papers that explore the concept of jazz from a range of disciplinary perspectives\, encouraging a discursive approach to the cultural study of jazz.
 Abstracts of no more than 300 words should be submitted to Dr Tony Whyton (t.whyton@salford.ac.uk) by Wednesday 27 May 2009.
 Review panel: Dr Tony Whyton (Salford)\, Dr Nicholas Gebhardt (Lancaster)\, Dr Catherine Tackley (Open University) and Professor George McKay (Salford)

SUMMARY:The Everyday Formation of the State
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4644562/ ] The study of the state has traditionally been pursued by way of two complementary
 tendencies: national historiographic works that examine the creation and vicissitudes
 of this or that state and conceptual works that attempt to identify and explain the
 nature or character of 'the state' as such. Both of these tendencies\, in addition to
 many other shared pitfalls\, have usually taken the state as something that exists on a
 plane above and beyond everyday social life. Whether focused on poets and
 philosophers\, kings and despots\, wars and revolutions\, or trade and treaties\, the usual
 point of view presupposed within the literature on the state is that one has to look 'up'
 to see the state\, that the state is external to and beyond the everyday.
 In direct opposition to this tradition\, recent developments in the social sciences have
 led to current studies that attempt to uncover the everyday materiality of the state.
 Rather then viewing the state as something external to 'civil society' or as 'above'
 social agency\, a new style of social inquiry has emerged that attempts to make sense
 of the state as a product of everyday experiences and practices. This special half-day
 workshop will bring together key researchers working in this tradition for the purposes
 of taking stock of the current contributions that his literature has made toward the
 study of state and helping to identify the key questions and problems that still need to
 be addressed and examined.
 Participants will include:
 Peter Bratsis\, University of Salford
 Tim Hall\, University of East London
 Alex Jeffrey\, University of Newcastle
 Joe Painter\, University of Durham
 Glyn Williams\, University of Sheffield

SUMMARY:Polish Cinema in an International Context
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4236167/ ] An international conference\, organised by Cornerhouse\, Adam Mickiewicz Institute (Warsaw)\, Polish Film Institute and University of Central Lancashire (Preston) and University of Salford.

 This conference will consider Polish cinema in an international context and feature contributions from both leading Polish\, UK and international academics\, as well as professionals involved with the production\, distribution\, archiving and promotion of Polish films.

The conference is addressed to the academic community\, as well as educators and promoters of Polish films and the public at large.

SUMMARY:On either side of a moat? Elite and mass attitudes towards right and wrong
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4563195/ ] As part of the Public Integrity and Political Reform seminar series from the University's Centre for Contemporary History & Politics\, Dr Sarah Birch from the University of Essex will talk about elite and mass attitudes towards right and wrong.
 Recent allegations involving the misuse of parliamentary allowances have thrust the issue of political ethics and politicians' integrity high onto the news agenda. At one level\, such allegations highlight the inevitable gap between the realities of parliamentary life and the standards demanded by the public. At another level\, they serve to highlight an apparent gap between mass and elite attitudes towards right and wrong.
 This paper explores the extent of contemporary disagreement among British political elites and those they represent by comparing responses to questions asked in a representative survey of the public with similar questions asked of incumbent MPs and parliamentary candidates.
 The paper finds that there are differences between members of the public\, candidates and MPs at the aggregate level\, but once we control for other personal characteristics\, only incumbency has a significant impact on individual's tolerance of ethically dubious behaviour. This finding suggests that political selection is not responsible for the ethics gap\, but rather legislative socialisation and the acquisition of distinct interests associated with membership of Parliament.

SUMMARY:1st Annual Conference of the International Functional Electrical Stimulation Society (UK and Ireland Chapter)
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4226051/ ] About the conference
 The UK and Ireland Chapter of IFESS was formed in 2009 to promote the research\, application\, and understanding of electrical stimulation.
 Research into functional electrical stimulation has reached an exciting stage in its development. For example\, our understanding of the way in which the central nervous system responds to peripheral stimulation has developed with new imaging and other technologies. There have also been significant technical advances in FES technologies for both clinical and sporting applications. In the clinical arena\, the recent publication by NICE of guidelines supporting the use of FES for drop foot reflects the growing strength of the evidence base.
 Who is the conference for?
 This conference will provide an opportunity for researchers and other interested parties to meet and share the latest research on FES. The first day of the conference will have a clinical focus and we particularly encourage clinicians who use FES to attend.
 Papers to be presented may include the latest work in the following areas:
 * Upper and lower extremity FES
 * Therapeutic electrical stimulation
 * Neuromodulation
 * Human-Computer-Interfaces
 * FES for respiration/blood pressure control
 * FES for bladder/bowel/sexual function
 * Control strategies
 * Physiological effects of electrical stimulation on muscle and nerve
 * Sensory neuroprostheses (hearing\, vision)
