Live at the Gantries’ nine nights will take place on Tuesdays at 7 o’clock at Gantry Plaza State Park\, a 2.5-acre waterside oasis between 49th and 50th Avenues along the East River. The series will run from June 24th to August 26th. 
      Performing July 29 is the York College Summer Big Band. This student jazz ensemble performs annually at the CUNY Jazz Festival at City College and was featured in Weltreisen on the German television station ARD in April 2006. The members of the workshop perform regularly throughout the borough.

      Subway Directions:  Take the E/F to Kew Gardens/Union Turnpike
      The press often refers to Bruce Ratner's mega-development proposal for Prospect Heights as the "most controversial" development project in New York City.  Did community pressure stop this project?  Or was it a slowing economy?  Is the project dead or undead?
      There are many questions that have yet to be resolved\, so our upcoming Four Borough meeting will not answer all of them.  We will give a chance for the good people of Queens and other members of the sensible development community to hear from some of the actors in this epic battle.
      Come next Wednesday to hear from two representatives of the Council of Brooklyn Neighborhoods (CBN).  This is one of the only groups that includes both Develop Don't Destroy-Brooklyn as well as elected officials who want to improve but not prevent the project.
      CBN is a very interesting model for civic groups around town\, especially since it has been busy advocating for the UNITY proposal\, a community-based alternative to the Ratner vision for Prospect Heights.

      10:30 am  Chinese Music Ensemble of New York. Founded in 1961\, it is the oldest and only full-scale Chinese orchestra in the United States and the Americas. Its present membership of nearly fifty musicians play practically every type of Chinese music on Chinese instruments\, both ancient and modern. For the HKDBF-NY performance a small ensemble from the orchestra performs in repertory on traditional string\, wind and percussions instruments.
       
      11:30 am  Cover-to-Cover. A group of seasoned musicians play your favorite rock and roll tunes with fresh new vitality and expert musicianship.

      (expressive dance) and is a dramatic interpretation of the
      juxtaposition & contrast of Bharatanatyam rudiments.
      "PRAYOG" features a vibrant 8 member dance ensemble and will explore
      the relationship between mathematical and metaphysical elements of
      traditional South Indian dance through Bharatanatyam choreography.
      This piece also uses basic principles of arithmetic to explore the
      bridge between arts and mathematics. It is

      To some degree\, the women are all about taking chances. They started their book business almost by accident a decade ago\, while selling gift baskets and floral arrangements at the St. Nicholas of Tolentine Flea Market in Jamaica. 
      They began bringing used books from their own collections to sell at the market\, selling out each week. A frequent customer soon asked if the pair could get their hands on books by other African-American authors. 
      "She asked how soon we could get them\, and I said we'd have them for her the next Saturday\," Rogers said. "And I thought\, 'I don't know how I'm going to get these\, but I'm going to find out.'" 
      Rogers\, 44\, not only supplied the requested books\, but soon found herself fielding requests for work by other black writers. Within weeks\, she and Piper were visiting distributor warehouses that stacked dozens of titles from tiny imprints around the country. 
      By 2001\, the women sensed a revolution stirring in the African-American literary community. Sister Souljah's 1999 cautionary coming-of age novel "The Coldest Winter Ever" had reinvigorated an urban-literature market that had hibernated for decades\, provoking a new generation of black writers to eschew the mythic glamour of drugs and violence. 
      Other genres took shape around the same time\, including revenge melodramas\, romance thrillers and inspirational memoirs about overcoming abuse\, addiction and lives of crime. 
      "It's a whole industry booming within an industry\," said Angela Wallace\, whose self-published novel\, "Secret Dramas\," earned acclaim for its unique hybrid of soap opera and mob intrigue. "[Writers] are implementing their own imprints. As a result of that\, they're bringing other black authors in under their umbrella. I think mainstream publishing is noticing that." 
      Amid this resurgence\, Piper and Rogers established their own tiny umbrella on the Internet in 2002. C&B Books Distribution eventually opened a kiosk at Jamaica Market in October and introduced its newest location in a compact corner store in Flushing in January. 
      The partners built their stock through consignment deals with self-published authors\, advising writers through labor-intensive processes such as mission statements\, cover design\, press releases and book signings. 
      While she tirelessly provides encouragement and advice\, Piper\, 53\, insists that no book will sell without its author's own follow-through. 
      "They have to be willing to get out\," she said. "They can't just drop their book at the store and expect the stores to sell their book. We have our own business to run." 
      But the women treat the Queens Book Fair like a community service as much as they do a business endeavor. 
      The event\, which offered seminars and workshops for published and unpublished writers alike\, kicked off with a networking breakfast to help forge partnerships in New York's independent literary scene. Readers had the chance to meet and solicit advice from their favorite authors\, as well. 
      "Harlem and Brooklyn\, they already have their recognition - even the Bronx\," Piper said. "Queens was very low-key\, and it's just starting to blossom.

      PFLAG is worldwide support group for the family members and friends of lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, and transgender (LGBT) people. 
      The PFLAG-Queens meets on the 3rd Sunday of every month\, at 2:00 PM at: the Reform Temple of Forest Hills located at 71-11 112th Street (2 blocks north of Queens Blvd.)
      Our mission is to promote the health and well-being of gay\, lesbian\, bisexual and transgender persons\, their families and friends through: support\, to cope with an adverse society\; education\, to enlighten an ill-informed public\; and advocacy\, to end discrimination and to secure equal civil rights.
      We provide opportunity for dialogue about sexual orientation\, and acts to create a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity. 
      PFLAG serves gay men\, lesbian women\, bisexuals\, transgendered persons and their parents\, families and friends. Anyone who wants to help end discrimination based on sexual orientation. We welcome "straight\, but not narrow" members openly!. 
      DIRECTIONS TO PFLAG-QUEENS BY SUBWAY/BUS:
      Take the E\,F\,G or R trains to the 71-Continental Ave stop (note: The V
      train does not run on Sunday).
      Take the Q60 bus to the corner of Queens Blvd and 71/Continental Ave. 
      Other buses that are in the area are: Q23\, Q65A 
      Walk North on 71 Avenue (Sterling Bank is on the North side of Queens Blvd.) for about two blocks (112th Street). Cross the Street and turn right. The Temple is up the block.

       Coming Out Help for Families and Friends 
      Your first reaction to learning that your loved one is gay\, lesbian\, bisexual\, transgender\, queer\, or questioning can range anywhere from anger to sadness\, fear to hurt\, confusion to grief\, and anywhere and everything in between. These emotions and the thousands of others that parents\, families\, and friends experience as they navigate their loved ones coming out process are normal.
      We can tell you with absolute certainty that you're not alone. According to statistics\, one in every ten people in this country and around the world is gay\, lesbian\, bisexual or transgender (GLBT). Approximately one in four families has an immediate family member who is GLBT\, and most people have at least one GLBT individual in their extended circle of friends and family.
      Parents\, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) is here for you. Our members are parents\, families and friends of GLBT people and GLBT people themselves. 
      We have been through much of what you are now feeling. We understand. 
      All residents of Queens and the surrounding tri-state area who are in need of our help and support should not hesite to come to a meeting\, to phone us or contact us by e-mail.
