DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/426365/ ] Guitarist Allan Holdsworth is widely considered to be one of the finest instrumentalists in all of jazz fusion\, yet has never truly received the recognition that he so rightfully deserves. Born on August 6\, 1946\, in Bradford\, Yorkshire\, Holdsworth was originally taught music by his father\, who was a pianist. First a saxophone player\, Holdsworth didn’t pick up the guitar until he was 17 years old\, but learned the instrument quickly. After playing in local outfits (in addition to learning the violin)\, Holdsworth relocated to London\, where he was taken under the wing of saxophonist Ray Warleigh. By 1972\, Holdsworth had joined progressive rockers Tempest\, appearing on the group’s self-titled debut a year later before joining Soft Machine in December 1973 — and radically changing the latter outfit’s sound to guitar-based fusion in the process. U.S. drummer Tony Williams discovered Holdsworth around this time\, which led to an invite for the up-and-coming guitarist to replace John McLaughlin in Williams‘ Lifetime project — Holdsworth abruptly left Soft Machine in March of 1975\, subsequently appearing on the Williams recordings Believe It and Million Dollar Legs. But Holdsworth’s union with Williams was a brief one\, as the guitarist joined up with French-English prog rockers Gong for such albums as 1976’s Gazeuse! (released as Expresso in the U.S.) and 1978’s Expresso II\, in addition to guesting on recordings by Jean-Luc Ponty\, Bill Bruford\, Gordon Beck\, Jack Bruce\, and UK.
      Also in the late ’70s\, Holdsworth launched a solo career\, which over the years has seen the release of nearly 20 albums (a few standouts include 1983’s Road Games\, 1985’s Metal Fatigue\, 1994’s Hard Hat Area\, and 2000’s The Sixteen Men of Tain)\, as the guitarist has been joined by such acclaimed musicians as Paul Williams (a former bandmate of Holdsworth’s in Tempest)\, Gary Husband\, Chad Wackerman\, Gary Husband\, Jimmy Johnson\, Steve Hunt\, and Alan Pasqua\, among others. In the mid-’80s\, Holdsworth was one of the first musicians to use a Synthaxe\, a guitar that contained a breath controller that proved to be a cross between a synthesizer\, guitar\, and saxophone (Holdsworth was awarded Best Guitar Synthesist from 1989 through 1994 in the readers’ poll of Guitar Player magazine). In the ’90s\, Holdsworth also created his own signature guitar model with the Carvin company. In the mid-’90s\, Holdsworth briefly shifted away from his fusion originals and recorded an album with longtime musical partner Gordon Beck that dipped into jazz standards. The Sixteen Men of Tain (2000) marked another shift\, in that it was the first Holdsworth release to feature an all-acoustic rhythm section. This was followed in 2002 by All Night Wrong\, his first official live release. Then! Live in Tokyo was next\, featuring Holdsworth’s 1990 live band\, which was followed by Against the Clock\, a career retrospective\, in 2005.

DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/450438/ ] ROCHESTER\, February 27\, 2008 – After having participation top 10\,000 for the first time in 2007\, the 18th annual JPMorgan Chase Corporate Challenge in Rochester is set for even bigger and better things in 2008.
      Registration is now open for this annual celebration of corporate fitness and camaraderie.
      The 3.5-mile run/walk and post-race party – open only to members of the Rochester-area business community – will be held on Thursday\, May 29 at the Rochester Institute of Technology\, with a 7:00 p.m. race start. Last year's event drew a city record 10\,397 participants from 411 companies.
      The Corporate Challenge has been held annually in Rochester since 1991\, growing from a modest 816 runners and walkers in the first event at Highland Park. It grew steadily to 8\,799 in 2003\, its last year at Highland Park.
      Now housed on the beautiful\, expansive campus of RIT\, the event has ample room for all participants and fantastic post-race parties. Hundreds of companies take advantage of the setting to set up hospitality tents and hold one-of-a-kind “off-site” gatherings.
      All entrants in 2008 and JPMorgan Chase & Co. will be Teaming Up For A Greener Tomorrow\, with the Corporate Challenge executing best practices to reduce the event's impact on the environment. For example\, registration for the event will be exclusively online\, t-shirts will be printed using soy ink\, and most of the materials used by race organizers on-site will be recyclable. Shuttle transportation to RIT from various locations throughout Rochester will also be offered.
      Each participant will also be giving back to the community as the JPMorgan Chase Foundation will make a donation for each entry to a not-for-profit organization. Information on this beneficiary will be announced prior to race night.
      In addition to the elements of camaraderie and philanthropy\, there is also strong competition at the front of the pack and 15 companies will earn an invitation to the JPMorgan Chase Corporate Challenge Championship in New York\, to be held on October 4. The top five men's\, women's and mixed teams will be invited. An eclectic group of companies and school districts earned invitations in 2007 including Greece Central Schools\, Kodak\, Monroe #1 BOCES\, Ortho Clinical Diagnostics\, PAETEC\, Pittsford Central Schools\, Rochester City School District\, University of Rochester\, Webster Central Schools\, and Xerox.

Being part of the Spontaneous Music Ensemble and Amalgam in the 1960’s & early 70’s. This group developed its own language within free improvisation and Jazz\, and the methods they developed has now permanently entered the language of that music. Trevor started to experiment with more Rhythmic and Melodic musical ideas and formed his 10 piece Moire Music Group and also Drum Orchestra in 1982. The Drum Orchestra was a blend of African and European musicians\, and they toured many countries in the World over many years including the USA (San Francisco Jazz Festival/Monterey Jazz Festival/Chicago World Music Festival/Washington D.C. July 4th Festival and many more)\, Canada\, Mexico\, Venezuela\, Colombia\, Bolivia\, Dominican Republic\, Ecuador\, Sarawak\, India\, Burma\, Singapore\, Australia\, N Zealand\, Azores Islands\, Jamaica\, Trinidad\, St Lucia\, Bahamas and all of Europe. Since those days Trevor has studied rhythm and has always developed music in his own style. Currently Trevor is playing in Duo form with Folk/Rock violinist Peter Knight from Steeleye Span. Another Duo with Veryan Weston the pianist\, and he is intending to put a Trevor Watts “Worldbeat” Trio together for a tour in the USA & Canada in May 2008 with two Toronto based musicians.       Dave Pegg from Fairport Convention/Dylan Project & fellow Dylan Project band member PJ Wright undertake a UK tour this summer called "A Night Off With Peggy & PJ".
      I hope the title explains our approach\," says PJ. "There will be a mix of my songs from Hedge of Sound\, some Little Johnny England material\, some of Peggy's songs and tunes from various sources\, and a smattering of Sandy Denny and Fairport. We might even throw in a bit of Jethro Tull. Alongside this original material\, we hope to play some cover versions of our favourite songs down the years."
      The acoustic instrumentation will include guitars\, bazouki\, mandolin\, dobro\, harmonica\, bass – but PJ promises not to play banjo\, fiddle or sax. "Add Peggy's skills as a raconteur and one or two of my duff jokes and it should be an idiosyncratic\, rocking evening of virtuoso fun for nearly all the family\," says PJ.

Mr. Hwang’s seminal ensemble (1990-2004)\, The Far East Side Band\, released two CDs\, Urban Archaeology (Victo Records) and Caverns (New World Records). As violinist\, he has worked with Butch Morris\, Reggie Workman\, Anthony Braxton\, Vladamir Tarasov\, Henry Threadgill and William Parker. As composer he has received support from the National Endowment for the Arts and New Jersey State Council on the Arts. His chamber opera\, The Floating Box\, A Story in Chinatown (New World Records)\, was named one of the top ten opera recordings of 2005 by Opera News.
      Taylor Ho Bynum (coronet\, various brass) is a composer and bandleader born in 1975\, raised in Boston\, and presently residing in Brooklyn. Bynum has established a reputation as a unique musical voice willing to take chances in a wide variety of artistic contexts. Projects range from ensembles in the jazz tradition\, to work with DJs\, contemporary classical composers\, and world music ensembles\, to composing for film and theater\, to collaborations with dancers and visual artists. He leads a variety of small groups and the large ensemble SpiderMonkey Strings\, and works with Anthony Braxton\, Cecil Taylor\, and the Fully Celebrated Orchestra.
       Andrew Drury (drum set) is a drummer/composer whose work has been noted for its lyricism and expansive approach to form and technique. Drury can be heard on fifteen CDs (two as a bandleader) and he has performed in Europe and the Americas with Michel Doneda\, Mark Dresser\, Briggan Krauss\, Myra Melford\, Chris Speed\, Jack Wright\, Kenny Wolleson’s Marching Band with Butch Morris\, and others. A former student of Ed Blackwell\, he photographs drum solos in desert and prairie settings\, collaborates frequently with dancers\, and has led over 700 junk percussion workshops across the U.S.
      Ken Filiano (string bass)\, has fused the rich traditions of the double bass\, bringing out the many voices inherent to the instrument. His solo bass CD\, Subvenire (NineWinds)\, received unanimous critical praise\, and was chosen by Cadence Magazine as one of the top ten CDs of 2003. Ken tours widely\, performing at the DuMaurier International Jazz Festival\, Banlieues Bleues Festival (Paris\, France)\; and on many concert stages including Carnegie Hall. He was principal bassist with the Cascade Festival Orchestra from 1985 - 2002. Ken has also played and/or recorded with artists and orchestras including Bobby Bradford\, Nels Cline\, Vinnie Golia\, Dom Minasi\, Alex Cline\, Ted Dunbar\, and Joseph Jarman.
