Both artists take a meticulous approach to the surface decoration of their clay vessels. Lorna Meaden is a clay artist working in Durango\, CO. She has participated in numerous exhibitions and workshops around the United States. Her work is in the collections of the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts\, the Fort Wayne Museum of Art and the San Angelo Museum of Fine Art among others. Meaden focuses on wheel thrown utilitarian objects with rich ornamentation and patterning. Her work takes inspiration from 18th century manufactured porcelain and silver that was commonly found in middle class English homes. Meaden transforms these traditional forms with lush pattern and exaggerated details. Lana Wilson of Del Mar\, CA is a ceramic artist\, educator andwriter. She is currently a contributor to Clay Times Magazine. Wilsons work is regularly featured in national exhibition and she is well known for her workshops at ceramic centers and museums. Wilson has a similar interest in creating complicated and usual surfaces on her utilitarian hand-built ceramics. She creates a variety of detailed patterns and textures through the use of stamps and tools. These details are then highlighted through a complicated glazing application. Many of her patterns are based on symbolic forms imbibing the everyday objects with ritualistic meaning. Two workshops will be held in conjunction with this exhibition. Unusual Construction Techniques with Soft Slabs with Lana Wilson will be run April 17-18-19\, 2009. Lorna Wilson will also give a two-day clay workshop October 17-18\, 2009. Rodriguez\, who was born in the Philippines and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area\, carefully crafts his drawings of desert lakes\, drifting silt dunes\, volcanic island chains\, and underwater trenches in the tradition of early cartographers\, using ordinary tools such as rulers and felt-tip marking pens. Unlike his predecessors\, however\, Rodriguez emphasizes repetitive stylized patterns and intense high-keyed colors rather than specific sites\, territories\, or boundary lines. This approach encourages viewers to reconsider the history of mapmaking\, as well as our tendency to accept maps as wholly truthful and accurate representations of the land we all share. A seismometer in the museum's lobby will let you know the intensity of your "floor quake." Another seisometer in the basement of the Randall is connected to a seismograph in the exhibit that registers actual earthquakes. Visitors to the museum can view real-time recordings of recent quakes all around the world and learn about plate tectonics while playing with the hands-on replica of the Hayward Fault. Our earthquake exhibit also includes full-sized replica of an earthquake refugee shack. The Great San Francisco Earthquake and Fire of 1906 destroyed more than half of the City's homes\, but most of the people escaped. Frank's prescient photographs redefined the icons of America\, demonstrating that cars\, jukeboxes\, gas stations\, diners\, and even the road itself were telling symbols of contemporary life. Frank's style -- distinguished by seemingly loose\, casual compositions\, often with rough\, blurred\, out-of-focus foregrounds and tilted horizons -- was just as controversial and influential as his subject matter.
