SUMMARY:Space Coast Art Festival
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4781713/ ] Space Coast Art Festival is one of the premier art festivals in the Southeastern United States. Held every Thanksgiving weekend in downtown Cocoa Beach\, the festival features 235 artists displaying work in 9 categories. This is a juried show\, with selections being made by a panel of art professionals and museum directors. The artists compete for $50\,000 in prize money. The festival kicks off with a 5K Turkey Trot Thanksgiving morning at 7 a.m. Friday there is a judge's party\, usually held at the home if a prominent member of the community\, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. In addition there is a street party with live music from 7 pm. to 11 p.m. The actual show begins Saturday and runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.\, and continues on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aside from Class A artists\, the show features a student art show featuring the work of students in grades K through 12\, a hands-on children's art area and food from local restaurants. The festival is a non-profit organization put together by a completely volunteer Board of Directors\, and run by over 200 volunteer staff.  Description: 
 The Ivory-billed woodpecker has long been considered the Holy Grail by diehard birders who refused to believe it went extinct over sixty years ago. So when scientists announced that the bird had been found in the swamps of eastern Arkansas\, it was celebrated around the world as the rediscovery of a lifetime. Following the largest recovery effort ever undertaken for a lost species\, and despite millions of dollars in funding\, Ivory-bills remain as elusive as ever. What can explain the mysterious absence of evidence while sightings by expert birders persist? Ghost Bird brings the Ivory-bill’s blurry rediscovery into focus\, revealing our uneasy relationship with nature and the increasing uncertainty of our place within it.
 Scott Crocker is a feature and documentary film director and producer whose award-winning films have screened at the Museum of Modern Art in New York\, the De Young Museum in San Francisco\, and at film festivals and exhibitions nationally and internationally. Under Small Change Productions Scott has developed and directed films concerned with memory\, identity and the narrative impulse. His documentary Boneshop of the Heart\, on outsider artists from the South\, received honors from both the American Anthropological Association\, and the American Folklore Society.

It is recognized as an exhibit of merit where original works of art made by hand are showcased. This is the sixth year of the juried craft triennial competition/exhibition. The competition draws over 1000 entries and over 400 artists from coast to coast working in various mediums such as ceramics\, fiber\, glass\, jewelry\, metal\, paper\, wood\, basketry and mixed media. This years juror is Gretchen Keyworth\, Director of the FullerCraftMuseum in Brockton\, MA. A notable figure in the world of contemporary craft\, she has extensive experience in curating and advising prominent craft shows. The FullerCraftMuseum underwent a re-branding in 2004/05 to become the preeminent craft museum in New England. The museum has recently exhibited Joan Morris\, Thomas Mann\, Megumi Naitoh\, Carter Smith\, and Alan Klein. Ms. Keyworth has independently curated many craft exhibitions such as GlassForms\, Charles Kaziun Early Works and Traditional Paperweights. The other 18 murals were recently painted by the Walldogs\, a collection of sign painters and muralists who came to town in June 2009.  Tucson artist Janie Cohen is known for both her figurative character studies and abstract expressionism paintings. Whether it is oil or acrylic\, underlying Janie’s surface mastery of color\, form\, texture\, perspective\, and line is always the story. Janie’s brushstroke combined with her blend of colors is her recognizable signature.
 "The dominant metaphor for my art is life itself.  My non-representational/abstract paintings begin with a serene core\, which develops with layers of expression\; while my figurative art begins with fleeting moments in time. All of my work interprets my own view of life…..our frailties\, our humor\, our sexuality\, and just how much alike we all really are.
 My earlier avocation as an art therapist\, author\, and illustrator positioned me well to tell stories on canvas.  I hope your own memories and emotions will blend with my compositions to make you stop for a minute\; discern your own interpretation from the canvas\; and to think about our similarities without regard to social prejudices of race\, gender\, or age.

From the Kente cloth of Ghana and mud cloth of Mali to the indigo Adire cloth of Nigeria and printed cottons of Guinea both tradition and innovation are evident. The evolution of traditional crafts\, the ingenuity of individual artists\, and commercial global market forces have all influenced the design\, color\, meaning and function of West African textiles.African art has never been frozen in time. The exciting patterns\, designs\, and color combinations of the cloth coincide with changes in culture\, religion and trade networks.In this exhibit you will see examples of some of the changes in cloth over time. While traditional mud cloth is painted in great symbolic detail\, commercial works are produced quickly with pleasing designs and\, often\, western markets in mind. Fine artists from Mali using traditional vegetable dyes with original designs now exhibit their mud cloth in contemporary art galleries in Europe and the United States.Many of the textiles to be exhibited have been donated to the Museum\, often by faculty. These textiles were collected by professors with a range of specialties in African Studies while traveling\, working and living in Africa. They illustrate the longstanding vitality of the work of Michigan State University in West Africa.This magnificent display of textiles illustrates how cloth has been transformed and refigured over time. It is hoped that visitors will enjoy the artistry and skill of the producers represented by the textiles but also understand this practice in its cultural and historical contexts. African art belongs to the past and to the present. The work is a two-year loan from the artist and is on display on the second floor of the Museum's Lila Acheson Wallace Wing for modern and contemporary art. 'Continuous Mile' (2007-2008) is comprised of a mile-long length of rope woven entirely of tiny white glass beads and cotton\, that has been coiled into a free-standing sculpture\, approximately 77 inches in diameter and 32 inches in height. The sculpture was made by the artist and her team of South African studio assistants employing a traditional Zulu bead technique.

It is this synthesis that is the essence of Cuban art and the subject of the exhibition Ajiaco: Stirrings of the Cuban Soul.Ajiaco seeks to interpret the diverse social dimensions of Cuban art in a global context through the exploration of its relationship with African\, Asian\, European\, and Indigenous influences and belief systems. The art incorporates the tales of the Orisha of Africa\, the calligraphy of Chinese Tao Te Ching\, and the rituals of indigenous peoples. The formats change\, the materials vary\, but the mix remains constant in both Cuban and Cuban American art. Ajiaco: Stirrings of the Cuban Soul is not necessarily about one group however\; it explores diaspora\, embracing those aspects of Latin American culture that are sympathetic to all. In broader terms\, this project addresses both the immigrant experience and the expression of cultural identity in a new place.The curator\, Dr. Gail Gelburd\, writes\, Isolated and yet educated\, restricted and yet heralded\, the Cuban artist embodies the angst of their situation and yet embraces the loftiest of goals. Their syncretist tradition and heritage allows them to go beyond the monotheistic traditions in order to find the origins of their soul\, the geist or inner spirit of their art. Gelburd has been conducting research on Cuban art and artists for over fifteen years. She has regularly traveled to Cuba and has lectured there for the Havana Biennale\, Havana University\, and Casa Africa. Gelburds article "Cuba: The Art of Trading with the Enemy" appears in Art Journal in the Spring 2009 issue.This exhibition consists of more than fifty objects\, including paintings\, works on paper\, photographs\, sculpture\, installations\, and audio works by 22 artists. Ajiaco: Stirrings of the Cuban Soul will feature such major figures in Cuban art as Wifredo Lam\, Manuel Mendive\, Jose Bedia and Sandra Ramos. The exhibition is tentatively scheduled to travel to two additional venues: the Chelsea Art Museum in New York City and the Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.Also on view\, and coordinating with Ajiaco\, is an exhibition of work by Imna Arroyo\, titled Ancestors of the Passage\, which will explore the socio-cultural beliefs of Caribbean culture. Raised in Puerto Rico but educated in the United States\, Arroyo has been on a quest to visualize her heritage. Like so many other Puerto Ricans\, she is of African and Taino descent. Knowing little of those cultures\, she journeyed to Cuba where she found a strong acceptance and recognition of that heritage.
