Held every Thanksgiving weekend in downtown Cocoa Beach\, the festival features 235 artists displaying work in 9 categories. This is a juried show\, with selections being made by a panel of art professionals and museum directors. The artists compete for $50\,000 in prize money. The festival kicks off with a 5K Turkey Trot Thanksgiving morning at 7 a.m. Friday there is a judge's party\, usually held at the home if a prominent member of the community\, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. In addition there is a street party with live music from 7 pm. to 11 p.m. The actual show begins Saturday and runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.\, and continues on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aside from Class A artists\, the show features a student art show featuring the work of students in grades K through 12\, a hands-on children's art area and food from local restaurants. The crest of the Smokies towers nearly a mile above the foothills\, creating a range in elevations and a variety of topographies that provide for a diversity of habitats and microclimates for birds. From the high\, exposed peaks to the warmer\, sheltered lowlands\, some 240 species of birds have been found in the park. Sixty species are year-round residents\; and nearly 120 species breed in the park\, including 52 species from the neo-tropics (a biogeographic region that includes South America\, the West Indies\, and tropical North America). Many other species use the park as an important stopover and foraging area during their semiannual migration. Creating these illusions involved a great deal of research. To prepare the bison diorama\, Wilson traveled to Wyoming in 1938 with a scientific specialist and another artist. There Wilson made color sketches\, took photographs and collected specimens for the foreground of the scene.
