The musicians who come regularly don't come just to get a little "stage time" - they come because of the community that calls Monday at The Utah home - and the musicians that come in for the first time eventually start to come regularly...
So come on down this monday\, have a beer\, bring your guitar if that's your thing\, and sit back and enjoy.

SUMMARY:Down Home and Outback: the Regional Music Archives
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4775008/ ] Guitar flat-picker extraordinaire Scott Fore is creating an on-going audio/video archive and performance series that features a range of noteworthy musicians in various parts of this region who have made significant contributions to the lexicon of American Roots music. These sought-after musicians live in work in places as diverse as the area itself -- from the Tidewater and coastal plains to the Piedmont and Mountain states of the Mid-Atlantic and South -- from peaks to shore. Taking shape in a variety of forms\, the archive is meant to record and perhaps re-introduce audiences to the rich legacy of music that surrounds us\, allowing us to learn more about what makes these musicians do what they do best and celebrate their unique gifts. The aim of this project is to locate and identify those unique qualities that characterize these individuals as artists as opposed to mere musical technicians.

SUMMARY:ON! the Beginnings of the Electric Sound Generation
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4451579/ ] The exhibition presents rarely displayed examples of "firsts" in electrified instruments. Of special note are numerous examples of iconic electric guitars showing a cornucopia of design ideas for electric pickups\, volume and tone controls\, bridges\, tailpieces and tremolo arms\, as well as instrument shapes and the incorporation of new materials. These electric and electro-acoustic guitars are displayed alongside other "firsts" including an electric zither\, banjos\, violins\, basses\, keyboards\, and amplifiers\, thus demonstrating how the new technology was applied to many instrument families. In addition\, the exhibition shows the development of electric pickup technology as well as the techniques for gaining control over sound and tone through amplification\, recording\, and special effects such as tremolo\, reverb\, and echo. By exploring the intersection of technology and music through the invention and diffusion of electric guitar\, the exhibition shows how the desire to crank up the volume ultimately led to the creation of a new sound.

SUMMARY:Tristan Perich and Lesley Flanigan at Lemp Arts
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4892061/ ] Tristan Perich and Lesley Flanigan at Lemp Arts
 Tuesday\, December 1\, 2009
 8:00PM\, $5
 Lemp Arts
 3301 Lemp Ave (at Utah)
 St Louis\, MO 63118
New York artists Tristan Perich and Lesley Flanigan team up this Fall for a series of unique electronic music performances across the United States. Perich's duet Dual Synthesis (for harpsichord and 1-bit electronics) and Flanigan's Amplifications (for voice and speaker electronics) explore the viscerality of electronic music. Mixing primitive sounds from their own hand-constructed instruments with the harpsichord and voice\, each choreographs intersections between acoustic and electric sound.
From art galleries to noise venues\, Perich and Flanigan stage their physical approaches to the construction of sound. Regular staples of the New York City experimental scene\, they create music that spans electroacoustic\, classical and noise. In addition to their solo work\, they are also known for collaborative projects with the Loud Objects (Tristan Perich\, Kunal Gupta\, Katie Shima) and Bioluminescence (Lesley Flanigan\, R. Luke DuBois). The Loud Objects will perform several guest shows\, soldering electronics live on an overhead projector or with hybrid fluorescent bulb guitars to create electronic noise. R. Luke DuBois' live video artistry will be woven throughout Flanigan's performances.
For composer/inventor Tristan Perich\, Dual Synthesis comes on the heels of finishing his new album\, 1-Bit Symphony. An electronic composition in five movements on a single microchip\, 1-Bit Symphony expands on the format of his 2005 release\, 1-Bit Music. A departure from traditional recordings\, 1-Bit Symphony literally ‘performs’ its music live when turned on. A complete music circuit\, programmed by the artist and packaged inside a standard CD jewel case\, plays the composition through a headphone jack mounted in the case itself. Probing the foundations of digital sound\, 1-Bit Symphony celebrates the virtuosity of electricity. The new album\, to be released by Cantaloupe Music\, will be available exclusively for presale at performances during the tour.
Artist/vocalist Lesley Flanigan's tour of Amplifications introduces her first solo album for speaker electronics and voice. Moving among a cluster of wires and microphones\, she builds compositional frameworks that grow and break apart. Her speaker instruments\, employing a built-in microphone\, create pulsing tones through their own feedback\, which Flanigan samples and weaves into her own vocal patterns. The result is music that hovers somewhere between noise experiments and lyrical song\, resonating with organic transparency.

SUMMARY:Down Home and Outback: the Regional Music Archives
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4775009/ ] Guitar flat-picker extraordinaire Scott Fore is creating an on-going audio/video archive and performance series that features a range of noteworthy musicians in various parts of this region who have made significant contributions to the lexicon of American Roots music.

DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4456879/ ] The exhibition presents rarely displayed examples of "firsts" in electrified instruments.

SUMMARY:£5 App Meet
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4842329/ ] A meet-up for programmers\, web developers and designers to discuss and showcase their "£5 apps" - lightweight software created by one or two people who take a simple idea and run with it.
The discussion will range from technical (what tools/languages were used during development) to business (building communities\, spreading the word\, costs and rewards).
This years Christmas special £5app will be held at Hector's House and has a music theme (much like the gaming theme of last year's Christmas special (http://fivepoundapp.com/meetup/14/) ).
We've got quite a busy line-up\, so we expect everything to run for a bit longer than usual:
 * Seb Lee-Delisle (http://sebleedelisle.com/) – "My life as a wannabe rock star at the birth of the internet music boom"
 * Toby Cole (http://www.55th.co.uk/) – "Zero to Theremin in 20 days" – How BuildBrighton built a feature rich\, ultrasonic\, laser etched MIDI controller in under three weeks
 * Tom Hume (http://tomhume.org/) – "You're all an orchestra\, get over it" – Bluetooth devices will interact with the audience to create changing ambient music\, created by Future Platforms for a Hack Day
 * lastminute.com labs (http://www.lastminute.com/site/labs) present Bottle-Rock-It\, a music game for n iPhones where (with any luck) n  3.
 * Jim Purbrick (http://jimpurbrick.com/) – A short talk on the Mrmr/LiveAPI guitar mounted iPhone Ableton live interface by the head of Second Life Europe (and later a demo with 100Robots)
 * 100Robots (http://www.myspace.com/onehundredrobots) – Jim and Max Williams (http://webcrisps.wordpress.com/) play live and loud for us
 Seb has the main talk:
"Before Seb Lee-Delisle was peddling his digital creations\, he had an entirely different life. He spent most of his 20s setting up Solar Records and promoting his band Stargirl (later Laine). Investing over £50\,000 of their own money\, they released their own CDs\, made it onto the radio and TV\, played in front of 30\,000 people\, recorded at George Martin’s Air Studios and had full page spreads in the nationals."
"They were at the forefront internet music boom of the late 90s. The future was looking rosy for this group of dynamic 20-somethings. So come and find out what it was like\, how the hell they got the £50K\, and why their plans didn’t quite reach fruition…"
Beer – several of us who are doing well this year will put up some bar-money (Alan of SensibleDevelopment (http://www.sensibledevelopment.com/) and Ian's ProCasts (http://procasts.co.uk/) so far\, several more to come\, get in contact if you want to share the love). We may also get mulled wine if we're lucky.
Food – maybe nibbles. Hopefully either cake or cookies too.

Composer\, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Taj Mahal is one of the most prominent and influential figures in late 20th century blues and roots music. Though his career began more than four decades ago with American blues\, he has broadened his artistic scope over the years to include music representing virtually every corner of the world – west Africa\, the Caribbean\, Latin America\, Europe\, the Hawaiian islands and so much more. What ties it all together is his insatiable interest in musical discovery. Over the years\, his passion and curiosity have led him around the world\, and the resulting global perspective is reflected in his music.
Born Henry St. Claire Fredericks in Harlem on May 17\, 1942\, Taj grew up in Springfield\, Massachusetts. His father was a jazz pianist\, composer and arranger of Caribbean descent\, and his mother was a gospel singing schoolteacher from South Carolina. Both parents encouraged their children to take pride in their diverse ethnic and cultural roots. His father had an extensive record collection and a shortwave radio that brought sounds from near and far into the home. His parents also started him on classical piano lessons\, but after only two weeks\, young Henry already had other plans about what and how he wanted to play.
In addition to piano\, the young musician learned to play the clarinet\, trombone and harmonica\, and he loved to sing. He discovered his stepfather's guitar and became serious about it in his early teens when a guitarist from North Carolina moved in next door and taught him the various styles of Muddy Waters\, Lightnin' Hopkins\, John Lee Hooker and Jimmy Reed and other titans of Delta and Chicago blues.
Springfield in the 1950s was full of recent arrivals\, not just from around the U.S. but from all over the globe. "We spoke several dialects in my house – Southern\, Caribbean\, African – and we heard dialects from eastern and western Europe\," Taj recalls. In addition\, musicians from the Caribbean\, Africa and all over the U.S. frequently visited the Fredericks home\, and Taj became even more fascinated with roots – the origins of all the different forms of music he was hearing\, what path they took to reach their current form\, and how they influenced each other along the way. He threw himself into the study of older forms of African-American music – a music that the record companies of the day largely ignored.
Henry studied agriculture at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in the early 1960s. Inspired by a dream\, he adopted the musical alias of Taj Mahal and formed the popular U. Mass party band\, the Elektras. After graduating\, he headed west in 1964 to Los Angeles\, where he formed the Rising Sons\, a six-piece outfit that included guitarist Ry Cooder. The band opened for numerous high-profile touring artists of the ‘60s\, including Otis Redding\, the Temptations and Martha and the Vandellas. Around this same time\, Taj also mingled with various blues legends\, including Howlin' Wolf\, Muddy Waters\, Junior Wells\, Buddy Guy\, Lightnin' Hopkins and Sleepy John Estes.
This diversity of musical experience served as the bedrock for Taj's first three recordings: Taj Mahal (1967)\, The Natch'l Blues (1968) and Giant Step (1969). Drawing on all the sounds and styles he'd absorbed as a child and a young adult\, these early albums showed signs of the musical exploration that would be Taj's hallmark over the years to come.
In the 1970s\, Taj carved out a unique musical niche with a string of adventurous recordings\, including Happy To be Just Like I Am (1971)\, Recycling the Blues and Other Related Stuff (1972)\, the GRAMMY®-nominated soundtrack to the movie Sounder (1973)\, Mo' Roots (1974)\, Music Fuh Ya (Music Para Tu) (1977) and Evolution (The Most Recent) (1978).
Taj's recorded output slowed somewhat during the 1980s as he toured relentlessly and immersed himself in the music and culture of his new home in Hawaii. Still\, that decade saw the well-received release of Taj in 1987\, as well as the first three of his celebrated children's albums on the Music For Little People label.
He returned to a full recording and touring schedule in the 1990s\, including such projects as the musical scores for the Langston Hughes/Zora Neale Hurston play Mule Bone (1991) and the movie Zebrahead (1992). Later in the decade\, Dancing the Blues (1993)\, Phantom Blues (1996)\, An Evening of Acoustic Music (1996) and the GRAMMY®-winning Señor Blues (1997) were all commercial and critical successes.
At the same time\, Taj continued to explore world music\, beginning with the aptly titled World Music in 1993. He joined Indian classical musicians on Mumtaz Mahal in 1995\, and recorded Sacred Island\, a blend of Hawaiian music and blues\, with the Hula Blues in 1998. Kulanjan\, released in 1999\, was a collaborative project with Malian kora player Toumani Diabate (the kora is a 21-string west African harp).
In 2000\, Taj released a second GRAMMY®-winning album\, Shoutin' in Key\, and recorded a second album with the Hula Blues\, Hanapepe Dream\, in 2003.
Taj joins the Heads Up International label in the fall of 2008 with the worldwide release of Maestro: Celebrating 40 Years. As the title suggests\, this twelve-track set marks the fortieth anniversary of Taj's rich and varied recording career by mixing original material\, chestnuts borrowed from classic sources\, and songs written by a cadre of highly talented guest artists. This anniversary gala includes performances by Ben Harper\, Jack Johnson\, Ziggy Marley\, Angelique Kidjo\, Los Lobos and others – many of whom have been directly influenced by Taj's music and guidance.
"The one thing I've always demanded of the records I've made is that they be danceable\," he says. "This record is danceable\, it's listenable\, it has lots of different rhythms\, it's accessible\, it's all right in front of you. It's a lot of fun\, and it represents where I am at this particular moment in my life. This record is just the beginning of another chapter\, one that's going to be open to more music and more ideas. Even at the end of forty years\, in many ways my music is just getting started."

SUMMARY:Helen Stellar\, Kav\, Square on Square\, and Nightmare Air
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4887743/ ] Buzz Bands LA invites you to a night of sweeping guitar rock on Dec. 2 at the Echo\, featuring Helen Stellar\, KAV\, Square on Square and Nightmare Air. Tickets are $8 at the door\, $5 if you RSVP to buzzbands(at)gmail(dot)com. Here’s a rundown on the lineup — more on all four of these bands in upcoming days:
Helen Stellar: This trio\, long one of L.A.’s under-recognized bands\, will play its first proper show in more than a year. They’ve been working on a follow-up to 2006’s “A Prayer to Myself\,” which collected their three EPs and was released on Vinyl Films\, the imprint of Andy Fischer and Cameron Crowe (The Helen Stellar tune “io (This Time Around)” appeared on the soundtrack to Crowe’s movie “Elizabethtown.”).
KAV: The latest project of Kav Sandhu — former guitarist and songwriter in the legendary Happy Mondays — KAV spent substantial time in L.A. this year recording an album and playing (and DJing) clubs. In March\, KAV will release its latest batch of dirty\, dancy psychedelia\, the “Mr. Nice” EP\, titled after the autobiography of Howard Marks and featuring Marks himself. His first U.S. release\, “The Shake It Like You Hate It” EP\, will also be out in early 2010.
Square on Square: The newest musical venture of songwriter Evan Slamka\, SOS has made a big impression in the band’s early club outings with its soaring\, anthemic rock songs. Slamka\, of course\, fronted Marjorie Faire\, who made one excellent album for Capitol Records (2005’s “Self Help Serenade”) before the band became a victim of major-label shrinkage.
Nightmare Air: This new trio and its agitated (but somehow melodic) noise-rock is the brainchild of two members of Film School\, guitarist Dave Dupuis and drummer James Smith. The band’s first EP is due Dec. 1.
As with past Buzz Bands LA outings\, there will be some surprises\; stay tuned to Facebook\, Twitter\, MySpace and this very Web portal for info.

DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4775010/ ] Guitar flat-picker extraordinaire Scott Fore is creating an on-going audio/video archive and performance series that features a range of noteworthy musicians in various parts of this region who have made significant contributions to the lexicon of American Roots music.

DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4461532/ ] The exhibition presents rarely displayed examples of "firsts" in electrified instruments.

SUMMARY:Boulder Acoustic Society
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4767903/ ] Each member of Boulder Acoustic Society comes from a different musical world\, and the resulting mix is what makes their music so special. Shredding guitar licks\, soaring gypsy violin\, a little ukulele and the thump of an old time bass bounce around with a jazz accordion and creative percussion to create a new sound. It is American Roots music with the edge of punk rock and the grace of chamber music. This joyful chaos has defined BAS for the last four years of relentless touring\, recording and rehearsing. They have crisscrossed the country countless times building a following the old fashioned way: by making connections with fans one at a time. From festivals to rock clubs\, dive bars to house concerts\, BAS has spread the word. And who is listening? Hipsters and hippies\, punks and grandmas\, kids and pickers\, folkies and yuppies all "get it" where it matters: deep down in that place that defies description.
 Reservations are required.
This show is the first in a series of FREE concerts presented by AMP Concerts and VSA North Fourth Art Center for the VSA Day Arts Program and the general community. The N4th Theater welcomes audiences with and without disabilities to these lively and memorable concerts.

SUMMARY:Down Home and Outback: the Regional Music Archives
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4775011/ ] Guitar flat-picker extraordinaire Scott Fore is creating an on-going audio/video archive and performance series that features a range of noteworthy musicians in various parts of this region who have made significant contributions to the lexicon of American Roots music.

Eddie Marks and James Anthony\, Inedible software\, co-founders
James and Eddie co-founded Inedible Software\, a Palo Alto based iPhone development company with over 3.9M downloads. They first learned iPhone programming at Stanford University in CS193P\, where they were taught by Paul Marcos and Evan Doll\, two Apple engineers. After graduating in June 2009\, with James earning a BS in Physics and Eddie a BAH (Honors) in Economics and a BS in Mathematics\, they started work on Inedible Software full time.
Their first product\, Air Guitar\, started as a final project for CS193P and then went through another month of polishing before being released to the store. Over the next months they created four additional applications\, launching two into the overall top 10 lists and two into their category’s respective top 30.
Their primary focus has been exploring the capabilities of the accelerometer\, moving from typical shake and tilt detection to full gesture recognition (Air Guitar detects strumming and whammying\, Shotgun Free / Pro detect cocking and firing and POW detects punching). They also created an app (currently unavailable) to promote the Magnolia Pictures film Mutant Chronicles.

To date we have trained in six cities in two countries over 100 developers who have developed dozens of apps in the app store\, from indpendent developer to Fortune 500 companies\, including IBM\, AOL\, genentech\, SRI\, Thomson Reuter\, AP\, theknot.com\, Crate and Barrel\, Shure\, HBSC\,etc.
What should I bring with me?
 An Intel Macintosh laptop computer.
A limited number of MacBook Pro laptop computers will be available for rental at reasonable rental rates.
XCode and the iPhone SDK installed on your Macintosh laptop
An iPhone or iPod Touch\, if you have one (optional)
 Basic programming knowledge\, including object-oriented programming experience\, such as Java\,\, NET\, C\, Visual Studio
 Familiarity with the Mac
  Who should attend?
Experienced programmers interested in iPhone application development
People new to Mac development and iPhone development
Why take a workshop when I can read books\, attend a lecture watch videos and webinars?
Most people\, even those with extensive experience in programming\, find the SDK difficult to master. Books and video are great to prepare for a workshop but there is sitll no substitute for a small hands on workshop with other developer\, where you can ask questions to an experienced instructor looking over your shoulder as you go through the episodes step by step. Basically it saves you month of time and money.
  Our Alumni Network for Work
We don't just offer training. We are also iPhone developers ourselves\, as are our alumni. We have an online alumni network where the members post jobs\, requests for proposals and form partnerships.

SUMMARY:ON! the Beginnings of the Electric Sound Generation
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4475866/ ] The exhibition presents rarely displayed examples of "firsts" in electrified instruments.

SUMMARY:Diggin' Deep
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4890182/ ] Popes of Chillitown are a six piece BritSka Indie band from London\, forged many moons ago from the tentative beginnings of late-night jam sessions between friends. The band have burst onto the London gig scene in few years with a host of performances at many well-respected venues\, including the legendary London Astoria and Hackney Empire.
But a straight up British Ska band they are not. Blending genres and each of the members’ influences makes for a unique sound and a breath of fresh air from generic bands that make generic music for fear of punters not “getting it”. A typical Popes of Chillitow show boasts soaring vocals\, orgasmic guitars\, sexy sax solos\, banging Ska beats and chunky basslines thrown in for good measure. Expect ska\, rock\, indie\, reggae\, dub\, drum n bass and much more.

Keeping you dancing into the small hours are the veteran True Notations DJ’s who will be delivering a potent selection of Rare Grooves\, Jazz\, Funk\, Soul\, Original Breaks\, Latin\, Hip Hop\, Reggae and Ska.

Remember to arrive early to avoid disappointment and we look forward to celebrating good music with good people.
 Keep Diggin' Deep!

SUMMARY:The Kenn Morr Band
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4842627/ ] The Kenn Morr Band
Kenn’s gifts to the rest of us are his songs\, which push boundaries while recalling a time when the world was a simpler place. His music has a dreamy\, simple quality that harkens back to a time when American music and life was less complicated yet just as strongly felt.
Bob Dylan’s brand of acoustic rock is referenced by Kenn’s low persuasive tones\, and traces of John Mellencamp are recognizable in the songs’ heartfelt quality and accessibility. The lyrics address universal themes such as love\, fear\, cautiousness and curiosity and speak to everyman. Even Kenn’s newest songs feel like they’ve existed forever and embody the time transcending quality of art that is truly organic.
Never are Kenn’s talents more palpable than in his live show. Often accompanied by his band manning a revolving lineup of instruments including violin\, mandolin\, organ\, banjo and drums\, Kenn performs triple duty on guitar\, piano & harmonica.
An evening spent with Kenn Morr feels intimate no matter what size the venue and he has performed with such kindreds as John Wesley Harding and Aztec Two-Step. The latter are such big fans they recorded a version of Kenn’s song "Follow The Moon."
Kenn’s songs echo that uncomplicated kindness and the resilience of the human spirit. A master of metaphor\, he shines at making broad gestures with the tiniest of phrases and exemplifies that the fewest words and simplest melodies often offer the most sweeping images and emotional resonance.
 Kenn Morr - vocals\, piano\, guitar\, harmonica
 Bob Gaspar - drums
 Dan Hocott - bass\, guitar\, vocals
