SUMMARY:The Internet as Playground and Factory
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4412226/ ] Today we are arguably in the midst of massive transformations in economy\, labor\, and life related to digital media. The purpose of this conference is to interrogate these dramatic shifts restructuring leisure\, consumption\, and production since the mid-century. In the 1950s television began to establish commonalities between suburbanites across the United States. Currently\, communities that were previously sustained through national newspapers now started to bond over sitcoms. Increasingly people are leaving behind televisions sets in favor of communing with -- and through-- their computers. They blog\, comment\, procrastinate\, refer\, network\, tease\, tag\, detag\, remix\, and upload and from all of this attention and all of their labor\, corporations expropriate value. Guests in the virtual world Second Life even co-create the products and experiences\, which they then consume. What is the nature of this interactive ‘labor’ and the new forms of digital sociality that it brings into being? What are we doing to ourselves?
Only a small fraction of the more than one billion Internet users create and add videos\, photos\, and mini-blog posts. The rest pay attention. They leave behind innumerable traces that speak to their interests\, affiliations\, likes and dislikes\, and desires. Large corporations then profit from this interaction by collecting and selling this data. Social participation is the oil of the digital economy. Today\, communication is a mode of social production facilitated by new capitalist imperatives and it has become increasingly difficult to distinguish between play\, consumption and production\, life and work\, labor and non-labor.
The revenues of today's social aggregators are promising but their speculative value exceeds billions of dollars. Capital manages to expropriate value from the commons\; labor goes beyond the factory\, all of society is put to work. Every aspect of life drives the digital economy: sexual desire\, boredom\, friendship — and all becomes fodder for speculative profit. We are living in a total labor society and the way in which we are commoditized\, racialized\, and engendered is profoundly and disturbingly normalized. The complex and troubling set of circumstances we now confront includes the collapse of the conventional opposition between waged and unwaged labor\, and is characterized by multiple “tradeoffs” and “social costs”—such as government and corporate surveillance. While individual instances are certainly exploitative in the most overt sense\, the shift in the overall paradigm moves us beyond the explanatory power of the Marxian interpretation of exploitation (which is of limited use here).
Free Software and similar practices have provided important alternatives to and critiques of traditional modes of intellectual property to date but user agency is not just a question of content ownership. Users should demand data portability\, the right to pack up and leave the walled gardens of institutionalized labor à la Facebook or StudiVZ. We should ask which rights users have beyond their roles as consumers and citizens. Activists in Egypt have poached Facebook's platform to get their political message out and to organize protests. Google's Image Labeler transforms people’s endless desire for entertainment into work for the company. How much should Google pay them to tag an image? Such payment could easily become more of an insult than a remuneration. Currently\, there are few adequate definitions of labor that fit the complex\, hybrid realities of the digital economy.
This conference confronts the urgent need to interrogate what constitutes labor and value in the digital economy and it seeks to inspire proposals for action. Currently\, there are few adequate definitions of labor that fit the complex\, hybrid realities of the digital economy. The Internet as Playground and Factory poses a series of questions about the conundrums surrounding labor (and often the labor of love) in relation to our digital present:
Is it possible to acknowledge the moments of ruthless exploitation while not eradicating optimism\, inspiration\, and the many instances of individual financial and political empowerment?
What is labor and where is value produced?
Are strategies of refusal an effective response to the expropriation of value from interacting users?
How is the global crisis of capitalism linked to the speculative performances of the digital economy?
What can we learn from the “cyber sweatshops” class-action lawsuit against AOL under the Fair Labor Standards Act in the early 1990s?
How does this invisible interaction labor affect our bodies? What were key steps in the history of interaction design that managed to mobilize and structure the social participation of bodies and psyches in order to capture value?
Most interaction labor\, regardless whether it is driven by monetary motivations or not\, is taking place on corporate platforms. Where does that leave hopeful projections of a future of non-market peer production?

SUMMARY:Honest Abe of the West
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4569043/ ] 'Honest Abe of the West\,' an exhibition organized by the Newberry Library\, will commemorate the 200th birthday of America's sixteenth president. 'Honest Abe of the West' chronicles Lincoln's early years in Illinois\, focusing on his career as an attorney in Springfield and as a dedicated leader of the Whig Party. Rare copies of printed materials in the exhibition chronicle his important debates with Stephen A. Douglas during the race for the U.S. Senate seat from Illinois in 1858. The exhibition also includes recently found ephemera from the 1860 presidential election and Republican Convention\, held in Chicago at Lake Street and the Chicago River. Visitors will learn about the day-to-day workings of Lincoln's presidency through a number of letters he received while in the White House\, including a request by an Indian chief to have a member of his tribe excused from service in the Civil War after a family tragedy\, and an offer from a Union sympathizer to spy on General Robert E. Lee's troop movements. Lincoln penned reactions in his own hand on both of these letters as well as on other items in the exhibition.

SUMMARY:Hall of Meteorites
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4396528/ ] Meteorites are solid particles from space that survive the passage through Earth's atmosphere to fall to the ground. In addition to such specimens as moon rocks and a meteorite studded with tiny diamonds\, the Arthur Ross Hall of Meteorites contains the Cape York Meteorite\, the world's largest meteorite on display. This 4.5-billion-year-old specimen is so heavy (34 tons)\, that its supports go straight through the floor down to the bedrock beneath the building. The massive meteorite\, which probably comes from the center of a small planetary body that was broken apart\, is a type known as an iron meteorite\; it is composed of metallic iron and nickel\, similar to the metallic core at the center of Earth. When Arctic explorer Robert E. Peary (1856-1920) discovered the specimen in 1894\, he learned that it had been used for centuries by the Inuits as a source of iron for knives and other weapons. When touching the meteorite\, visitors are touching an object that is both part of human history and a relic of our solar system.

SUMMARY:Heilbrunn Cosmic Pathway
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4245411/ ] Following the explosive Big Bang experience\, visitors exit onto the Harriet and Robert Heilbrunn Cosmic Pathway\, a dramatic\, spiraling ramp that ushers them through 13 billion years of cosmic evolution. At the start of the walkway\, visitors can measure the length of their stride and determine how many millions of years pass with each step. Thirteen markers along the way denote the passage of each billion years and\, at eight landings\, computer interactives help visitors understand the nature and size of the universe at that point in time. Artifacts are also on display\, including evidence of the earliest bacterial life on Earth and the fossilized tooth of a giant carnivorous dinosaur. At the end of the 360-foot circular pathway\, the thickness of a human hair illustrates the relative duration of human history\, from cave paintings to the present day. The Heilbrunn Cosmic Pathway was specially designed to allow for adjustments and updates to the exhibitry\, as research in astrophysics reveals new information about the age and nature of the universe.

SUMMARY:Andy Warhol Portfolios: Life and Legends
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4529218/ ] Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was one of the central figures of the Pop Art movement and one of the most recognizable artists of the second half of the 20th century. Though he worked in many media\, his prints sealed his artistic reputation. He used mass-produced images to mirror and reflect upon our media and celebrity-obsessed culture\, and he also reacted to the pervasive and subliminal influence of advertising. This is the first Warhol exhibition ever presented at the MFA. It features over 70 prints from some of his most celebrated series\, including Flowers\, Muhammad Ali\, Campbell's Soup\, and Marilyn. Also included are prints from the Andy Mouse series\, an homage by his friend and fellow artist Keith Haring\, and a portrait of Warhol by Robert Mapplethorpe. This exhibition is organized by the Bank of America Corporate Art Program.

SUMMARY:The Vogel Collection
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4784355/ ] The Dorothy and Herbert Vogel Collection - Fifty Works for Fifty StatesOver the course of more than forty years\, New York collectors Dorothy and Herbert Vogel amassed one of the most significant collections of contemporary art in the United States. The couple began collecting after their marriage in 1962. Dorothys income as a librarian paid expenses while Herbs salary as a postal officer was reserved for their collecting endeavors. The Vogels frequented New York galleries and purchased works that could be stored in their modest one-bedroom apartment. Herb and Dorothy also established close relationships with many of the artists they collected and enjoyed visiting their studios. The Vogel collection predominantly consists of drawings and includes minimalist and conceptual art\, colorful examples inspired by abstract expressionism\, and a range of figurative and representational pieces. In the 1970s\, the collection began to receive acclaim from artists and critics alike\, and a number of exhibitions ensued. Herb and Dorothy developed a relationship with the National Gallery of Art and transferred their collection to its premises in 1990. Realizing that their collection of more than 4\,000 works was too large for any single institution\, the Vogels worked with the National Gallery of Art to distribute fifty works from the collection to one institution in each of the fifty states. The Oklahoma City Museum of Art was selected as the Oklahoma institution in 2008.The fifty works donated to the Museum from the Vogel collection are small-scale and reflect the diversity of their collecting efforts. Of the 25 artists included are examples by Lynda Benglis\, Martin Johnson\, Lucio Pozzi\, Edda Renouf\, Robert Barry\, and Richard Tuttle. The Vogels actively collected many artists who later became important figures in the contemporary art scene and maintained a devotion to collecting the art of their time. SUMMARY:Exhibition - Chance Aesthetics
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4784087/ ] Dripping or flinging paint across a canvas\; letting the progressive decay of organic materials determine a composition\; flipping coins to compose musical scores--these are some of the processes used to incorporate chance as a decisive factor in the creation of an artwork. Beginning in the early twentieth century and moving into the1970s\, Chance Aesthetics addresses chance as a key compositional principle in modern art. The exhibition features more than sixty artworks by over forty avant-garde artists from Europe and the United States\, including work by Jean (Hans) Arp\, George Brecht\, John Cage\, Marcel Duchamp\, Max Ernst\, Ellsworth Kelly\, Alison Knowles\, Francois Morellet\, Robert Morris\, Robert Motherwell\, Jackson Pollock\, Dieter Roth\, Niki de Saint Phalle\, and Yves Tanguy\, among many others. The central paradox resting at the heart of the exhibition involves the tension between chance and choice. Though many artists throughout the twentieth century have championed the creative possibilities of the arbitrary in the creation of works of art--both as an attack on reason and logic and as a counterpoint to officially sanctioned aesthetic tastes--artistic subjectivity is never truly effaced. Undertaken as a stimulus to new forms of artistic invention\, the deliberate implementation of chance advanced a challenge to longstanding assumptions concerning what might constitute a work of art and the role of the artist as autonomous creator.Chance Aesthetics explores these concepts in three thematic sections: "Collage\, Assemblage\, and the Found Object\," "Automatism\," and "Games and Systems of Random Ordering." Each section addresses central avant-garde strategies employed to subvert or rework traditional forms of artistic expression. These categories also provide a basic framework through which individual movements--Dada\, Surrealism\, Abstract Expressionism\, Nouveau Realisme\, Fluxus\, and others--are traversed in order to compare and contrast chance-based strategies and objectives across diverse historical and cultural contexts.Chance Aesthetics is curated by Meredith Malone. The Kemper Art Museum is always free and open to the public. Location : Barney A. Ebsworth Gallery Cost : Free

And what actions should be taken to resolve this financial crisis and help prevent others from happening? In Too Big To Save? Robert Pozen\, former vice chairman of Fidelity Investments and current lecturer at the Harvard Business School\, takes on these questions and others.

SUMMARY:Signs of the Times: Robert Rauschenberg's America
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4282497/ ] Robert Rauschenberg\, who came to prominence in the 1950s\, was one of the great American artists. As a painter\, sculptor\, and printmaker\, he drew his subject matter from the everyday world. In the style of collage\, he juxtaposed and overlapped actual objects and fragments derived from photographs\, newspaper clippings\, and magazines-often bound together by the artist's gestural brushwork-to create kaleidoscopic works of art. The provocative collisions of images and ideas were layered in their meanings and mirrored the energetic rhythms and contradictions of modern life. 'Signs of the Times: Robert Rauschenberg's America' presents 59 lithographs and screenprints from three major print series created from 1968 to 1970.

DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4281998/ ] Presenting a diverse range of artworks made in the last four decades and highlighting the endeavors of many artists working today\, 'Between Art and Life' takes its title from a statement Robert Rauschenberg made in 1959 concerning the intersection of art and life. The exhibition reflects on the pluralistic landscape of contemporary art -- one where artists investigate personal visions\, both poetic and political\, in relation to the world around them.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra was formed in 1996 by Paul O'Neill who immediately approached long time friends and collaborators Robert Kinkel and Jon Oliva to form the core of the writing team. While producing and writing for a number of years with various rock groups Paul was always looking for ways to make the music have greater and greater emotional impact. He tried to write the music that was so melodic it didn't need lyrics. And lyrics that were so poetic that they didn't need music but once you put the two of them together\, the sum of the parts would be greater than the whole\, and you couldn't imagine them apart. Once he'd done this\, he was still looking for a way to take it to even greater heights and he realized that putting the songs within the context of a story would give it a third dimension that would make that additional emotional impact possible. Hence\, he started writing not just albums\, but rock operas. He realized then\, that there was an inherent problem recording rock operas within the standard rock and roll band makeup. Rock operas by their nature need the voices to change as the characters change. Rock bands normally only have one (or if you're lucky) two great vocalists to work with\, therefore limiting how far you can go. You're forced to make the music fit the band\, as opposed to allowing the music to go wherever it needs to.

SUMMARY:Robert Schimmel From HBO\, Showtime & The Howard Stern Show
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/3016543/ ] Schimmel's big break came when Rodney Dangerfield spotted him and invited him to appear on HBO's "Young Comedian Special." Since then he has gone on to appear on "Conan O'Brian\," "Comic Strip Live\," Joan Rivers\, Oprah and was a writer for Fox's "In Living Color."
His extraordinary rise can be traced to his unique brand of blue humor that pushes the envelope of adult humor and modern sexual attitudes.
Schimmel is also a regular on the Howard Stern Show and stole the show at last year's prestigious Edinburgh Comedy Festival. His new CD was produced by William E. McEuen\, the man behind the comedy careers of Steve Martin\, Steven Wright and Sam Kinison.
"Real humor comes from real life. That's where I draw my inspiration\," says Schimmel.

SUMMARY:Pedro Costa and Jean-Marie Straub at UC Irvine
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4839087/ ] "Le Streghe\, Femmes Entre Elles" ("Witches\, Women among Women") by Jean-Marie Straub showing with "Ossos" ("Bones") by Pedro Costa
Jean-Marie Straub again adapts Cesare Pavese’s Dialogues with Leuco in the same form as Le genou d’Artemide. Here\, Circe recounts her love affair with Ulysses\, speculates on what makes mortals laugh\, and the sun breaks in and out above them. As usual\, Straub mounted the production as a stage play in Italy\, then filmed it with a coda that could only be done in film.
"Ossos" was shot on location in the Lisbon district of Fontainha\, and stylistically evoking the films of Yasujiro Ozu\, Robert Bresson\, and Vittorio de Sica\, a stunningly beautiful\, muted drama of young people grappling with the burdens and hopes of parenthood in destitute circumstances. An anti-telenovela that takes visual storytelling and non-professional screen performance to new heights. The film was nominated for the Golden Lion prize at the Venice International Film Festival in 1997.

DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4570188/ ] “Anton in Show Business” by Jane Martin runs from November 5-15 in the Center Square Theatre at Southern Oregon University. In this backstage theatrical circus\, Martin skewers the archetypes of players in the American theatre while affirming theatre is indelible. “The star has no scruples\, the artistic director has no sense\, the corporate funder has no clue\, and this appears to be the status quo!” writes Robert Faires in The Austin Chronicle. “With all this ego\, greed\, lust\, insecurity\, and ineptitude\, the American theatre is making Hollywood look like a Benedictine monastery.” The play received the American Theatre Critics/Steinberg New Play Award in 2001.
Performances are at 8 p.m. on Thursday-Saturday\, November 5-7 and Thursday-Sunday\, November 12-15\, with 2 p.m. matinees on Saturday and Sunday\, November 14-15. Tickets are $20 regular\, $17 senior\, $5 students. Subscribers to three or more plays receive a discounted rate of $16 regular and $14 senior. SUMMARY:The David Nelson Band
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4430064/ ] The David Nelson Band has been recording and performing around the country since 1994. Their broad musical palette spans the Almost Acoustic style that Nelson played with Jerry Garcia\, through roots rock n’ roll\, and psychedelic country-rock. The DNB perform David's compositions (some co-written with Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter)\, select covers\, and several Grateful Dead classics upon which Nelson appeared on the original album releases. These stylistic elements\, combined with plenty of spontaneous free form improvisation\, create a sound that is uniquely David Nelson Band. Though the original songs are mostly written by Nelson\, the development of all the material is a fully collaborative effort. The Nelson\, Sless\, Siegel\, Sears\, Molo Band as a name is a bit cumbersome - though in reality\, that’s what they are.
These days the DNB only tour select areas a few times a year\, as the individual band members are in high demand with other successful touring acts. Their loyal and enthusiastic fans relish these special times to reunite at Nelson family gatherings. DNB shows are a joyous reunion for all - a communal gathering where regulars and newcomers all feel part of an extended family.

SUMMARY:Honest Abe of the West
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4569033/ ] 'Honest Abe of the West\,' an exhibition organized by the Newberry Library\, will commemorate the 200th birthday of America's sixteenth president.

DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4396529/ ] Meteorites are solid particles from space that survive the passage through Earth's atmosphere to fall to the ground.

DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4249485/ ] Following the explosive Big Bang experience\, visitors exit onto the Harriet and Robert Heilbrunn Cosmic Pathway\, a dramatic\, spiraling ramp that ushers them through 13 billion years of cosmic evolution.
