He continued to support himself as a commercial artist and eventually as a teacher. By 1908\, his work had been shown in exhibitions in Philadelphia\, Chicago\, Pittsburgh and New York. In that year\, seven other artists joined Sloan to organize their own exhibition at Macbeth Galleries in New York City. Called "The Eight" by the press\, they were Robert Henri\, William Glackens\, Everett Shinn\, Maurice Prendergast\, Arthur B. Davies and George Luks. They rejected the rather genteel style and subject matter promoted by the National Academy of Design. "The Eight" had a spectrum of individual styles\; it was their commitment to artistic freedom that unified them.

DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/2696890/ ] Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was one of the central figures of the Pop Art movement and one of the most recognizable artists of the second half of the 20th century. Though he worked in many media\, his prints sealed his artistic reputation. He used mass-produced images to mirror and reflect upon our media and celebrity-obsessed culture\, and he also reacted to the pervasive and subliminal influence of advertising. This is the first Warhol exhibition ever presented at the MFA. It features over 70 prints from some of his most celebrated series\, including Flowers\, Muhammad Ali\, Campbell's Soup\, and Marilyn. Also included are prints from the Andy Mouse series\, an homage by his friend and fellow artist Keith Haring\, and a portrait of Warhol by Robert Mapplethorpe. This exhibition is organized by the Bank of America Corporate Art Program.

In 2005\, Tavares Strachan journeyed to the Alaskan Arctic and worked with a skilled team to extract a single two-and-a-half ton piece of ice from a frozen river. This ice block was shipped to the Bahamas (the artist's birthplace) and exhibited there in hot summer weather\, kept cold in a specially designed freezer powered by solar energy. The very same block of ice and cooling system are now on view outside of the Museum's south entrance. small installation of photographs in the Martha A. and Robert S. Rubin Lobby accompanies this presentation.

In addition to such specimens as moon rocks and a meteorite studded with tiny diamonds\, the Arthur Ross Hall of Meteorites contains the Cape York Meteorite\, the world's largest meteorite on display. This 4.5-billion-year-old specimen is so heavy (34 tons)\, that its supports go straight through the floor down to the bedrock beneath the building. The massive meteorite\, which probably comes from the center of a small planetary body that was broken apart\, is a type known as an iron meteorite\; it is composed of metallic iron and nickel\, similar to the metallic core at the center of Earth. When Arctic explorer Robert E. Peary (1856-1920) discovered the specimen in 1894\, he learned that it had been used for centuries by the Inuits as a source of iron for knives and other weapons. When touching the meteorite\, visitors are touching an object that is both part of human history and a relic of our solar system.

Heizer and De Maria are among a handful of artists who pioneered the Earthworks movement of the late 1960s. Both artists created the majority of their early work in Nevada\, and while De Maria made his signature sculpture\, The Lightning Field\, in New Mexico\, Heizer remained in central Nevada to work on his mile-long City project\, which is still under construction. These extremely rare archives provide a glimpse into how a new artistic vocabulary for the world was shaped in the Nevada desert. The Museum thanks G. Featuring 83 photographs made largely in 1955 and 1956 while Frank traveled the United States\, the project looked beneath the surface of American life to reveal a profound sense of alienation\, angst\, and loneliness. Frank's prescient photographs redefined the icons of America\, demonstrating that cars\, jukeboxes\, gas stations\, diners\, and even the road itself were telling symbols of contemporary life. Frank's style -- distinguished by seemingly loose\, casual compositions\, often with rough\, blurred\, out-of-focus foregrounds and tilted horizons -- was just as controversial and influential as his subject matter. The exhibition celebrates the 50th anniversary of the publication by presenting all 83 photographs in the order established by the book\, accompanied by a detailed examination of the project\, its relationship to Frank's earlier work\, and its impact on his later art.

Though he worked in many media\, his prints sealed his artistic reputation. He used mass-produced images to mirror and reflect upon our media and celebrity-obsessed culture\, and he also reacted to the pervasive and subliminal influence of advertising. This is the first Warhol exhibition ever presented at the MFA. It features over 70 prints from some of his most celebrated series\, including Flowers\, Muhammad Ali\, Campbell's Soup\, and Marilyn. Also included are prints from the Andy Mouse series\, an homage by his friend and fellow artist Keith Haring\, and a portrait of Warhol by Robert Mapplethorpe. He continued to support himself as a commercial artist and eventually as a teacher. By 1908\, his work had been shown in exhibitions in Philadelphia\, Chicago\, Pittsburgh and New York. In that year\, seven other artists joined Sloan to organize their own exhibition at Macbeth Galleries in New York City. In addition to such specimens as moon rocks and a meteorite studded with tiny diamonds\, the Arthur Ross Hall of Meteorites contains the Cape York Meteorite\, the world's largest meteorite on display. This 4.5-billion-year-old specimen is so heavy (34 tons)\, that its supports go straight through the floor down to the bedrock beneath the building. The massive meteorite\, which probably comes from the center of a small planetary body that was broken apart\, is a type known as an iron meteorite\; it is composed of metallic iron and nickel\, similar to the metallic core at the center of Earth. When Arctic explorer Robert E. Peary (1856-1920) discovered the specimen in 1894\, he learned that it had been used for centuries by the Inuits as a source of iron for knives and other weapons. When touching the meteorite\, visitors are touching an object that is both part of human history and a relic of our solar system.
