SUMMARY:The Internet as Playground and Factory
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4412226/ ] Today we are arguably in the midst of massive transformations in economy\, labor\, and life related to digital media. The purpose of this conference is to interrogate these dramatic shifts restructuring leisure\, consumption\, and production since the mid-century. In the 1950s television began to establish commonalities between suburbanites across the United States. Currently\, communities that were previously sustained through national newspapers now started to bond over sitcoms. Increasingly people are leaving behind televisions sets in favor of communing with -- and through-- their computers. They blog\, comment\, procrastinate\, refer\, network\, tease\, tag\, detag\, remix\, and upload and from all of this attention and all of their labor\, corporations expropriate value. Guests in the virtual world Second Life even co-create the products and experiences\, which they then consume. What is the nature of this interactive ‘labor’ and the new forms of digital sociality that it brings into being? What are we doing to ourselves?
Only a small fraction of the more than one billion Internet users create and add videos\, photos\, and mini-blog posts. The rest pay attention. They leave behind innumerable traces that speak to their interests\, affiliations\, likes and dislikes\, and desires. Large corporations then profit from this interaction by collecting and selling this data. Social participation is the oil of the digital economy. Today\, communication is a mode of social production facilitated by new capitalist imperatives and it has become increasingly difficult to distinguish between play\, consumption and production\, life and work\, labor and non-labor.
The revenues of today's social aggregators are promising but their speculative value exceeds billions of dollars. Capital manages to expropriate value from the commons\; labor goes beyond the factory\, all of society is put to work. Every aspect of life drives the digital economy: sexual desire\, boredom\, friendship — and all becomes fodder for speculative profit. We are living in a total labor society and the way in which we are commoditized\, racialized\, and engendered is profoundly and disturbingly normalized. The complex and troubling set of circumstances we now confront includes the collapse of the conventional opposition between waged and unwaged labor\, and is characterized by multiple “tradeoffs” and “social costs”—such as government and corporate surveillance. While individual instances are certainly exploitative in the most overt sense\, the shift in the overall paradigm moves us beyond the explanatory power of the Marxian interpretation of exploitation (which is of limited use here).
Free Software and similar practices have provided important alternatives to and critiques of traditional modes of intellectual property to date but user agency is not just a question of content ownership. Users should demand data portability\, the right to pack up and leave the walled gardens of institutionalized labor à la Facebook or StudiVZ. We should ask which rights users have beyond their roles as consumers and citizens. Activists in Egypt have poached Facebook's platform to get their political message out and to organize protests. Google's Image Labeler transforms people’s endless desire for entertainment into work for the company. How much should Google pay them to tag an image? Such payment could easily become more of an insult than a remuneration. Currently\, there are few adequate definitions of labor that fit the complex\, hybrid realities of the digital economy.
This conference confronts the urgent need to interrogate what constitutes labor and value in the digital economy and it seeks to inspire proposals for action. Currently\, there are few adequate definitions of labor that fit the complex\, hybrid realities of the digital economy. The Internet as Playground and Factory poses a series of questions about the conundrums surrounding labor (and often the labor of love) in relation to our digital present:
Is it possible to acknowledge the moments of ruthless exploitation while not eradicating optimism\, inspiration\, and the many instances of individual financial and political empowerment?
What is labor and where is value produced?
Are strategies of refusal an effective response to the expropriation of value from interacting users?
How is the global crisis of capitalism linked to the speculative performances of the digital economy?
What can we learn from the “cyber sweatshops” class-action lawsuit against AOL under the Fair Labor Standards Act in the early 1990s?
How does this invisible interaction labor affect our bodies? What were key steps in the history of interaction design that managed to mobilize and structure the social participation of bodies and psyches in order to capture value?
Most interaction labor\, regardless whether it is driven by monetary motivations or not\, is taking place on corporate platforms. Where does that leave hopeful projections of a future of non-market peer production?
 - Trebor Scholz

SUMMARY:The Hidden World of Bears
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4599000/ ] 'The Hidden World of Bears\,' on display at the Ford Education Center Exhibit Gallery\, reveals fascinating details of black bear everyday existence and opens a door into the intimate lives of these surprisingly timid animals. Renowned photographer and wildlife researcher Lynn Rogers\, Ph.D.\, has studied bears in the wild for more than 35 years and has developed mutually trusting relationships with individual wild bears\, including mothers with cubs. The bears have learned to ignore him as he follows them through the forest\, recording their movements and collecting data on their preferred foods and interactions with other bears. 'The Hidden World of Bears' features 60 of Rogers' framed photographs of black bears\, documenting their life as cubs born in a winter den\, continuing through the spring and summer months as they eat\, play and interact with other bears - and at times people - and culminating in the construction of a new den in the fall. Rogers has provided a wealth of background information on black bears for popular books and television documentaries. His research has been featured on the Discovery Channel\, NBC Nightly News and National Geographic Explorer\,' as well as in books\, scientific journals and other magazines. A recent Animal Planet documentary\, 'The Man Who Walks with Bears\,' traces his life's work with black bears.

SUMMARY:Culture and Continuity: the Jewish Journey
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4603746/ ] At the heart of The Jewish Museum is its permanent exhibition\, 'Culture and Continuity: The Jewish Journey'\, representing one of the world's great opportunities to explore Jewish culture and history through art. This vibrant two-floor exhibition features 800 works from the Museum's remarkably diverse collection of art\, archaeology\, ceremonial objects\, video\, photographs\, interactive media and television excerpts. It examines the Jewish experience as it has evolved from antiquity to the present\, over 4\,000 years\, and asks two vital questions: How has Judaism been able to thrive for thousands of years across the globe\, often in difficult and even tragic circumstances? And what constitutes the essence of Jewish identity?

SUMMARY:Back in the World: Portraits of Wisconsin Vietnam Veterans
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4639337/ ] Nearly 30 large-format color portrait photographs will be on view at the Museum in the exhibition 'Back in the World: Portraits of Wisconsin Vietnam Veterans.' As part of its Wisconsin Stories project\, Wisconsin Public Television has produced documentaries about Wisconsin veterans experiences in World War II\, Korea\, and Vietnam. During production of the Vietnam project (to air in 2010)\, photographer James Gill took portraits of the veterans who participated in the documentary as a tribute to their service. These photographs provide insight into the veterans' memories and experiences\, which they carry long after the war ends. The scale and presence of the images\, combined with brief excerpts of interviews with their subjects\, place them in a long tradition of art that delivers a powerful social message.

SUMMARY:Museums and the Public Understanding of Science
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4766355/ ] Jon Miller\, the John A. Hannah Professor of Integrative Studies and Director of the International Center for the Advancement of Scientific Literacy at Michigan State University\, will describe the public use of informal science learning resources over the last 20 years – museums\, books\, television\, Internet – and discuss emerging patterns in adult science learning. He will suggest that the traditional “warehouse” model of adult learning is being rapidly replaced by a “just-in-time” model and that this transition is fostered by the current revolution in communication technologies. He will conclude with a discussion of the various roles that museums might play in the 21st century.

SUMMARY:Garnet Rogers
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4644669/ ] Garnets CD “GET A WITNESS” was chosen by Boston Globe as one of their Top Ten Folk CDs of 2007 "On a long awaited concert album\, even his torch songs feel like tours de force\, sung in a glorious bass that shimmers with danger and grace . . . "
Born in Hamilton\, Ontario to parents of Nova Scotian descent\, Garnet Rogers spent many hours in front of the old floor model radio listening to Grand Ol' Opry broadcasts and harmonizing with his brother\, the late folk legend Stan Rogers. Two years later\, Garnet was playing the definitive 8-year-old's version of "Desolation Row" on his ukulele. He soon abandoned that instrument to teach himself the flute\, violin and guitar. At 18\, Garnet was on the road as a full-time working musician with brother Stan. Together they formed what has come to be accepted as one of the most influential duos in the history of North American folk music. Garnet acted as producer and arranger for his older brother from 1973 to 1983\, when Stan died tragically in a plane crash. Since then\, Garnet has courageously established himself as a formidable solo artist. Hailed by the Boston Globe as a “ . . . charismatic performer and singer — one of the major talents of our time\,” they continue by saying that “Garnet’s vocal and instrumental talents are complimented by an undeniably powerful physical presence — close to six and a half feet tall — with the lungs to match.” With his “smooth\, dark baritone\,” (Washington Post) his incredible range and thoughtful\, dramatic phrasing\, Garnet is widely considered by fans and critics alike to be one of the finest singers anywhere. His music\, like the man himself\, is literate\, passionate\, highly sensitive\, and deeply purposeful. Cinematic in detail\, his songs give expression to the unspoken language of the heart. An optimist at heart\, Garnet sings extraordinary songs about people who are not obvious heroes and of the small everyday victories. As memorable as his songs\, his over-the-top humor and lightning-quick wit move his audiences from tears to laughter and back again. Rogers has been the featured performer on numerous television and radio programs including Much Music\, Mountain Stage\, and All Things Considered. He has been a headliner at concert venues and festivals such as Wolf Trap\, Lincoln Center\, and Art Park\; sharing the stage with performers such as Mary Chapin Carpenter\, Billy Bragg\, Bill Monroe\, Ferron\, Greg Brown\, and Guy Clark. Though Garnet has enjoyed much popularity over the years\, he remains resolutely independent\, turning down offers from major labels to ensure that he continues doing music his own way. “I have found strength and comfort in his songs. This is good and rich and big music. Welcome one and all. Come on in. Get down.” ~ Greg Brown (www.garnetrogers.com)

SUMMARY:Bobcat Goldthwait
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4657957/ ] November 12th – 14th the Acme Comedy Company in Minneapolis\, MN celebrates its 18th Anniversary with the one and only Bobcat Goldthwait. Armed with his unique voice and a keen eye for life’s absurdities\, Goldthwait continues to pack comedy venues across the country.
Bobcat’s writing and directing accomplishments continue to grow including his dark cult comedy\, “Shakes the Clown\,” “Windy City Heat” and the romantic comedy “Sleeping Dog’s Lie”. In September 2009 Bobcat releases his 4th movie “WORLD’S GREATEST DAD.” The new film stars Bobcat’s long time friend Robin Williams. With a merciless acuity this nihilistic comedy ridicules collective grief and the news media’s cynical marketing of inspirational uplift after a death. –The New York Times “World’s Greatest Dad” overturns clichés of hypocritical sanctimony with surprising laughs. Bobcat Goldthwait may be the most unique filmmaking sensibility since Albert Brooks. – The Washington Post
Bobcat has directed for many television shows including “Chappelle's Show”\, the “Man Show”\, and “Crank Yankers”. As a comic\, he had 3 HBO specials and had appeared on the David Letterman show by the time he was 20\, and has appeared in an innumerable slew of movies and was huge in the 80's\, all of which has allowed him to live in an impossibly luxurious rental home in the Los Angeles area. DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4294493/ ] David Mamet's fiendishly funny\, over-the-top new comedy 'November\,' fresh from its smash-hit success on Broadway\, offers no mercy in its satirical stab at American politics. Meet President Charles Smith\, the most corrupt\, inept buffoon ever to sit in the Oval Office. It's the final days of his bid for a second term\, but the country is a mess and his poll numbers are "lower than Gandhi's cholesterol." Toss in a lesbian speechwriter longing to marry her sweetheart on national television\, a cynical chief of staff\, Thanksgiving turkeys awaiting pardon\, and enough shady backroom scheming to make even a Glengarry Glen Ross con man blush\, and you've got a new Mamet masterpiece.

SUMMARY:Po Boy Tango
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4787316/ ] The west coast premiere of PO BOY TANGO hits East West Players bringing the appreciation\, artistry and aromas of cooking to the stage. East West Players (EWP)\, the nations premier Asian American theatre\, continues its 44th season\, themed Art Is...\, with the west coast premiere of PO BOY TANGO\, by Kenneth Lin. This production will be directed by the artistic director of The Chance Theater in OrangeCounty\, Oanh Nguyen. It will bring back to the EWP stage two of EWPs veteran actors\, Jeanne Sakata and Dennis Dun and introduce African American actress Cece Antoinette. PO BOY TANGO is a heart warming play where the issues of racism and death are addressed through the power of food. Shark Fin Soup. Drunken Crab. Black Feather Chicken. Po Mama's Chinese cuisine evokes the joy of cooking and her son\, Richie Po has the palette to prove it. When Po Mama dies and passes her secrets on to him\, he reunites with Gloria B\, a "Soul Food" chef in the making. Together\, they use Po Mama's TV cooking tapes to discover a deeper understanding of food\, culture and the recipe for friendship. With our seasons theme of Art Is we want our audiences to be able to find the artistic value in everyday life\, says Producing Artistic Director Tim Dang. There is so much artistry in cooking that can be witnessed on numerous television shows on the Food Network like Ace of Cakes\, Iron Chef and Unwrapped. Martha Stewart is a prime example of discovering the art in food. However\, food doesnt just feed our stomachs\, the art of cooking brings people together like a list of ingredients creating an intensely rich stew of relationships. The power of cooking used in this production helps the characters overcome so many challenges\, and in the end\, feeds our soul. It will truly give you insight the next time you prepare a meal. PO BOY TANGO was work-shopped in South Coast Repertorys Pacific Playwrights Festival in 2007. It received its world premiere at Northlight Theatre in Chicago earlier this year. Playwright Kenneth Lin is the recipient of the Princess Grace Award\, the L. Arnold Weissberger Award and the winner of the Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Competition. An alumnus of CornellUniversity\, the U.S. Fulbright Scholarship Program and the Yale School of Drama\, Lin was awarded the ASCAP Cole Porter Prize for Excellence in Playwriting. General Tickets range from $25 - $35. Preview tickets are $20 for all seats. Opening night tickets are $60 for all seats.

SUMMARY:The Hidden World of Bears
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4598982/ ] 'The Hidden World of Bears\,' on display at the Ford Education Center Exhibit Gallery\, reveals fascinating details of black bear everyday existence and opens a door into the intimate lives of these surprisingly timid animals.

SUMMARY:Back in the World: Portraits of Wisconsin Vietnam Veterans
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4639382/ ] Nearly 30 large-format color portrait photographs will be on view at the Museum in the exhibition 'Back in the World: Portraits of Wisconsin Vietnam Veterans.' As part of its Wisconsin Stories project\, Wisconsin Public Television has produced documentaries about Wisconsin veterans experiences in World War II\, Korea\, and Vietnam.

The cameras are rolling and the stage is set for an evening of music\, humor\, novelty acts and
quick-change artists. In a word: vaudeville.
First beamed by early television into living rooms across America\, now Five By Design brings it direct to you\, on stage\, live and in living color! No need to adjust the ‘rabbit ears’ as Five By Design’s vibrant harmonies and comedic talents are instantly brought into focus.
Suddenly\, you find yourself singing “Sh Boom” outside a soda shoppe in varsity sweater and saddle shoes\, or playing along as quiz show contestants guess the tunes in “What’s That Song?”
You’ll take to the skies as a musical travelogue spans the globe winding up in Africa\, and be spellbound by “The Lion Sleeps Tonight.” In true variety show fashion\, Stay Tuned moves seamlessly from songs to skits and back again. Classic commercials are vividly brought to life promoting everything from bananas to toothpaste\, while on another network family and friends are unexpectedly reunited.
But don’t worry about the remote! Five By Design changes the channel for you as the quintet glides effortlessly from “Hey There” to “’S Wonderful” to “The Girl From Ipanema” in the blink of an eye. All too soon you’re on your way out the door with a smile on your face and a song in your heart.

Get cheap tickets at Radio City Christmas Spectacular Tickets\, a site solely devoted to the Radio City Rockettes.
The Rockettes are a precision dance company\, whose home is the Radio City Music Hall located in New York City. The Rockettes are responsible for bringing fans to their shows for more than 50 years. The Rockettes were originally comprised of 16 women and now the popular kick line has 36 members. They are known for their festive and showy holiday costumes. Little girls dream of being a Rockette when they grow up. They also have a special group that tours around the country at holiday time and every show is a total sellout. The girls range in height from 5'6" to 5'10 1/2" and the choreographer arranges them from the tall girls in the middle to the shorter girls on the end of the kick line.
The Radio City Christmas Music Spectacular which is held at Radio City Music Hall and recorded for television is the most popular television show annually in the United States. This show is usually shown at Thanksgiving\, the start of the Christmas season. The Rockettes proudly bring in 2.1 million fans annually for their performances. The Rockettes are also famous for literally "kicking off" product lines for companies like McDonalds\, Honda\, and Oldsmobile. They have also been guests at the Super Bowl and George Bush's inauguration in 2001. They tend to bring smiles to all their fans faces as they are truly breathtaking to watch.
A few historical facts about the Rockettes are that the group was initiated by a man named Russell Market in 1925 in St. Louis Missouri. They were first called the Missouri Rockets. In 1927\, Mr. Samuel Roxy Rothafel was so impressed with them and he brought them to New York City to perform. Apparently\, they took over the Zigfield Follies when they came to New York. Another interesting tidbit is that they were originally called the Roxyettes because they performed in Mr. Rothafel's Roxy Theater. During World War II\, they brightened up the holidays for servicemen by being a part of the USO tours. Sadly\, blacks were not allowed into the dance line until 1987. The only justification for this meaningless policy was that black dancers would distract from the similar look of the dance group. The oldest living member of the original Rockettes is now 95 and lives in Toronto\, Canda.

USC THORNTON SYMPHONY AND CHORAL ARTISTS IN
 BACH’S MONUMENTAL B MINOR MASS
Concert Is Culmination of Week-Long Residency by Rilling\, Who also Leads Two Conducting Masterclasses and Conducts USC Choral Artists for First Time in 8 Years
 Friday\, November 13\, 2009\, 7:30 P.M.\, at USC’s Bovard Auditorium
Internationally acclaimed conductor and Bach specialist Helmuth Rilling will direct the USC Thornton Choral Artists and the USC Thornton Symphony in one of the unparalleled musical contributions of all time\, Bach's B Minor Mass\, on Friday\, November 13\, 2009\, 7:30 P.M.\, at USC’s Bovard Auditorium. The concert\, which is part of USC Thornton’s ongoing 125th Anniversary celebration\, is the culmination of a weeklong residency at USC by Rilling\, who also leads two conducting masterclasses. This marks the first time Rilling has conducted the USC Choral Artists in eight years.
A pre-concert lecture at 6:30 P.M. features Thornton’s renowned sacred-music scholar Dr. Nick Strimple\, who will discuss the historical importance and relevance of this colossal work\, which explores the meanings of faith\, religion and spirituality through Bach's emotional\, mathematical\, musical and structural treatment of the Latin text.
Helmuth Rilling's self-described credo is that “Music should startle people and reach deep down inside them\, forcing them to reflect. It should never be merely 'comfortable\,' never fossilized\, never soothing.” Born in 1933 in Stuttgart\, Germany\, Mr. Rilling is a conductor\, educator and ambassador for the music of Johann Sebastian Bach worldwide. He founded the Gächinger Kantorei and later the Bach-Collegium Stuttgart\, serving as the choir's regular orchestral partner. In 1981\, Mr. Rilling founded the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart\, which was dedicated to furthering the music of J.S. Bach through public concerts\, master classes\, symposia and residencies throughout the world. Mr. Rilling is dedicated to encouraging young musicians\, and in 2001\, he founded the Festivalensemble Stuttgart\, consisting of a choir and orchestra that drew talented young musicians from 25 different countries. The residency and concert with the USC Thornton Choral Artists and USC Thornton Symphony furthers this mission.
General admission is $18. Tickets for seniors\, USC alumni and non-USC students are $12. (USC students\, staff and faculty with valid ID are free.) USC’s Bovard Auditorium is located at 3551 Trousdale Parkway\, Los Angeles\, CA 90089 (on the USC campus in downtown LA). Ample parking is available. SUMMARY:November
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4304174/ ] David Mamet's fiendishly funny\, over-the-top new comedy 'November\,' fresh from its smash-hit success on Broadway\, offers no mercy in its satirical stab at American politics.

DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4787315/ ] The west coast premiere of PO BOY TANGO hits East West Players bringing the appreciation\, artistry and aromas of cooking to the stage. "Weirdsville”
 Oddities From The Archives
 Screens at Oddball Films
On Friday\, November 13\, Guest Curator Pete Gowdy and Oddball Films present an evening of the strange\, the bizarre\, and the sometimes baffling short films\, commercials and trailers from deep within the Oddball archive. These “found” films surface in the process of research for other programs: too good to languish on the shelves\, they demand to be screened! Weirdsville is a monthly companion program to the Strange Sinema series. Showtime is 8:30PM and admission is $10.00. Seating is limited so RSVP is preferred to: info@oddballfilm.com or 415-558-8117.
 Highlights Include:
 Tempo Twelve (Color\, 1964)
Delta Airlines promotional film with pre-Laugh In Arte Johnson as a comic jetsetter. 12 different swinging locations are highlighted\, including SF\, LA\, Vegas\, Dallas(?) Jamaica\, Puerto Rico\, New Orleans and Washington DC. Remember when jet travel was this glamorous? Neither do we.
Revenge of the Kinematograph Cameraman (B+W\, hand tinted\, 1912)
Wildly inventive landmark of early cinema and stop motion animation\, insects star in this Kafkaesque love triangle. Polish director Ladislas Starévich\, working in Russia\, started out as an entomologist when he tried to replicate a bug battle he had witnessed. His experiment was so successful and satisfying that he continued with animation. A must see!!
 Doubletalk (Color\, 1975)
Hilarious short! A boy picks up his date at her home and meets the parents- and we hear what everyone is really thinking over the niceties and conversation. Originally broadcast on Saturday Night Live\, this forgotten gem plays like a distilled Meet The Parents and is also notable as the film debut of Robert Picardo (Star Trek: Voyager).
 I Was A Thanksgiving Turkey (Color\, 1986)
Thanksgiving from the turkey’s point of view- roasted\, carved and devoured.
 Mondo Cane Excerpts (Color\, 1962)
Several excerpts from the first Mondo Cane film that became a cult sensation\, documenting strange rituals around the world. First scene is painter Yves Klein and his “human brushes”- nude women dipped in blue paint which he uses on a large canvas\, while a live symphony plays!! Next is the Western culture-clash ritual of old folks learning to hula in Waikiki. Then the most (in)famous sequence- Cargo Cults- primitive tribes that worshipped airplanes as gods…
 The Babysitter (Color\, 1947)
Bizarre Little Lulu cartoon- Lulu is taking care of a very naughty baby who won’t stay in his crib. When Lulu hits her head while chasing him\, she dreams a visit to the fabled Stork Club night spot- where all the famous Hollywood guests and musicians are babies… a weird one for the ages!
PLUS- Another episode of Hot Dog with our pals Jonathan Winters\, Jo Anne Worley and Woody Allen\, movie trailers and commercials straight out of Weirdsville!
 Curator Biography:
Pete Gowdy (aka DJ Chas Gaudi) is host of San Francisco’s Shellac Shack\, a weekly 78 rpm listening party and a DJ specializing in vintage sounds: soul\, jazz\, country\, punk and new wave. A graduate of the Vassar College Film Program\, he is an associate producer of Marc Huestis Presents\, the long-running movie legend tributes at the Castro Theatre.
