SUMMARY:Collecting California: Selected Works from the Permanent Collection
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4422862/ ] Although one may imagine that the Laguna Art Museum collection began with the development of the Laguna Beach Art Association in 1918\, the story is much more complex than that.
 The collection officially began in 1940\, fueled in part by the recognition that many of the artists that came to Laguna Beach at the turn of the twentieth century had passed away. One by one many wonderful works of art were donated either by these artists or their widows and heirs. By the 1970s\, the Laguna Beach Art Association had become the Laguna Beach Museum of Art and started to generate significant one person and thematic exhibitions on important California artists and movements. As a result\, collectors began to donate major pieces of their collections to the Museum.
 A 1977 exhibition with a publication on William Wendt provided one of the first in-depth looks at a significant West Coast impressionist painter. This exhibition helped to validate the importance of the work to many local dealers and area collectors. Subsequently\, local dealers and collectors began to explore the work of prominent twentieth century impressionist painters in Southern California\, which led to the establishment of significant collections. In the 1980s and 90s\, exhibitions and scholarship on California art at the Museum became more sophisticated and began to generate interest from collectors and dealers in the area.
 That kernel of interest resulted in the development of some magnificent collections\, and some of them have formed the most significant parts of Laguna Art Museum's Collection. As the Museum's mission became more focused on California art\, collectors with a similar scope began to take interest.
 Collecting California will focus on individual collectors and some of the important gifts they have made. Works of art given by Nancy Dustin Wall Moure (the art historian who has pioneered the history of California art and wrote the book California Art: 450 Years of Painting and Other Media)\, Carl S. Dentzel (founder of the Southwest Museum)\, Mickey and Ruth Gribin (collectors\, trustees\, and patrons of contemporary Southern California art since the 1960s)\, Stuart and Judy Spence (trustees\, theorists\, benefactors of cutting edge Los Angeles art)\, are among some of the collectors on which Collecting California will focus.

Fish's iconography generally consists of a fairy tale world inhabited by beavers\, skulls\, and birds which he has developed in part as a response to the influence that popular culture\, cartooning\, and literature (like the Brothers Grimm) has had on him.
 Fish\, who lives in San Francisco\, was born in 1974 in Albany\, New York\, and has lived and worked in San Francisco for the last 15 years. In 2006\, Fish worked with Nike Skateboarding and designed the Air Classic shoe. Fish has also collaborated with hip-hop artist Aesop Rock for the album The Next Best Thing.
 He has had exhibitions at Fifty24SF\, San Francisco (2008\, 2006)\; Joshua Liner Gallery\, New York (2008)\; and The Don Milan (2008). His publications include Once Upon a Time\, published by Fifty24SF Books (2008)\; Romantic Delusions\, published by Drago Books (2008)\; and the cover of Juxtapoz Magazine (December\, 2006).

DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4779491/ ] Thirty-six illustrations selected from the Zimmerli Art Museums holdings of over 60 childrens book illustrations by Lois Lenski (1893-1974) reveal ways in which the Newbery Awardwinning author/illustrators deep interest in the daily lives and activities of children is reflected in visual components of her books. Lenskis groundbreaking picture book\, The Little Auto (1934)\, features clear hand-lettered text and engaging black and red illustrations that resonate with the imaginative play of a child with a toy car. Reflecting her ideas about the preferences of young children\, crisp ink drawings with touches of color predominate in works such as Now Its Fall (1948)\, and figures and action are contained within the frame of the page. Concurrently with creating picture books\, Lenski researched\, wrote\, and illustrated fiction for older children. Beginning in the early 1940s\, Lenski determined to investigate and describe in fiction the lives of children from various regions of the United States currently under-represented in juvenile literature. Books such as Judys Journey (1947)\, a novel about a girl whose family earns a living as migrant workers\, provided children of the World War II and post-war era with a perspective on lives much different from their own. Small\, information-packed illustrations in graphite or ink amplify\, but dont compete with the texts. Books for viewing and for browsing will be on display in the gallery\, along with activities for visitors. Illustrations on view in the gallery\, some being shown for the first time\, are the gift of the artists son\, Steven Covey.  In this fun hands-on workshop\, learn the basics of working with precious metal clay - with a focus on the fundamentals of ring making using PMC-3. Although helpful\, no prior PMC experience is needed!
 This full day class will cover: correct ring sizing\, different construction methods\, layering and adding textures\, stone setting and finishing techniques. You’ll also learn how to apply a beautiful patina to your designs to give them additional depth and character. Although we’ll be using a kiln in this class\, there will be a demo on torch firing so you can see how easy it is to make PMC creations in your own home. You’ll decide what to make in class\; either a bypass ring or traditional ring (or both if you have time).
 As part of the class you’ll have the option of making STACKING RINGS\, the latest fashion craze in jewelry (additional PMC may be required depending on style). Learn how to make a set of staking silver rings\, how to design them and how to wear them. With a set of 3 rings you can create 15 different looks!!
 You will leave with at least one completed silver ring\, made and designed by YOU\, handouts and resources\, and the skills necessary to make fine silver jewelry\, from start to finish\, in your own home!
