SUMMARY:Startups/VCs SIG: Wall Street Meltdown - Impacts on VC Funding?
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/1163719/ ] If you're an entrepreneur seeking venture capital\, how do today's financial headlines impact your business? Looking ahead\, does the investment banking industry collapse\, mortgage industry bailout\, and a softened dollar have a direct connection to investment dollars? If so\, what can entrepreneurs expect in the coming year?
      Before the recent demise of Lehman\, Merrill\, and other investment banks\, the venture capital industry was already having a challenging year. For the first time in 30 years\, no VC-funded company went public in the second quarter. The IPO drought ties up capital and extends investment timeframes\, lowering returns. Now with the Wall Street meltdown\, there are fewer firms to support M&A deals and IPOs. How are VC firms planning to navigate the coming years\, and what does this mean to an entrepreneur seeking capital? What sectors are gaining momentum\, and which are falling out of favor?
      Join us Monday\, October 20\, 2008 for the EBIG Startups/Venture Capital Special Interest Group Meeting in Berkeley. Learn from a panel of VC investors who will discuss:
          * What is the impact of the economy on venture capital and entrepreneurs?
          * What sectors are gaining investor momentum?
          * Where is the smart money going in the rest of 2008?
          * How can entrepreneurs make the most of these trends?
          * How to avoid common pitfalls when approaching investors
      Confirmed panelists include:
          * John Stuart\, Claremont Creek Ventures
          * Lars Leckie\, Hummer Winblad
          * Allessandro Zago\, Siemens Technology-to-Business Center
          * Jean-Louis Gassee\, Allegis Capital
      Free for eBig Members\, Guests $15-20.

SUMMARY:Vancouver Enterprise Forum - Fireside Chat with Morgan Sturdy
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/1165326/ ] Morgan Sturdy is truly a legend in the Vancouver tech community. Whether it was hardware or software\; public or private\; large or small\; success or failure: Morgan has seen it. In addition to building and selling Dees Communications\; Morgan has served on the board of 23 technology companies ranging from Chair of Hothaus (which sold for a record breaking sum to Broadcom) to Creo (sold to Kodak) to failed dot-com ventures. With Dick Hardt as moderator for our "fireside chat”\, he and Morgan will get to the bottom of what it takes to build\, run and exit a technology company.
      The VEF's new format from last year involves kicking off the event with the presentations - now going first at 6:00 p.m. The bar will be open at 5:30 for some pre-event networking. The presentations will be followed by our networking session beginning at around 7:00 pm. In addition to the guest speaker\, 100-second lightning talks by local entrepreneurs will kick off each month's event. This format change has been designed to provide attendees with time after the presentations to chat in an unhurried fashion with their colleagues and the presenters about ideas raised in the talks.
      This light dinner/networking event should be of interest to business entrepreneurs in every industry\, and will provide a unique forum for networking with members of the technology community\, including some of our top local VCs and entrepreneurs.
      About Morgan Sturdy
      Morgan Sturdy is a high-tech entrepreneur and executive with an impressive 20 year track record. Morgan was the President of Dees Communications Engineering\, a market leader in call center solutions. He joined Dees Communications when it was a 10 person company supplying telecom peripheral equipment to BC Tel. Over the next 10 years\, Dees was transformed from a regional hardware supplier to a prominent player in the call center technology solutions market. In 1997\, NICE Systems\, an Israeli based NASDAQ traded company\, purchased Dees Communications. After the acquisition\, Morgan remained as President of Nice Systems Canada and later as Executive VP and COO of Nice Systems North America. During this period under Morgan’s leadership the revenue of the North American operation increased by 300%.
      Morgan has been very active in the BC technology community serving as a board member of 20 technology companies. These included CREO which was sold to Kodak for $1 Billion\, Hothaus Technologies which was acquired by Broadcom for the one of the highest amounts ever paid for a private BC technology company\, UB Video which was sold to Cisco\, and TIR which was sold to Phillips. Morgan currently serves as a director of Lighthaus Logic\, Teraspan Networks\, and ResponseTek.
      In addition\, Morgan was a founder\, chair\, and/or board member of many organizations formed to support technology entrepreneurs and build the technology industry in BC. These include the Vancouver Enterprise Forum\, Acetech Academy for Technology CEO’s\, the BC Technology Industry Association (BCTIA)\, Science World\, and the Premier’s Technology Council. In 2001\, he became Acetech’s first “Fellow” in recognition of his distinguished service to the Vancouver technology community. In 2004\, Morgan was the recipient of the BCTIA Bill Thompson Life Time Achievement award and he also received the Distinguished Alumni Award from BCIT for Significant Contribution to a trade or industry.

SUMMARY:VC TaskForce - Bridging the CEO / VC Communications Gap
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/1160971/ ] Your company presentation is the single most important fundraising document. Delivered at a VC partner meeting or shared over email\, your company overview defines who you are\, what you do and the extent to which your firm sounds like an attractive investment opportunity for angels\, VCs or strategic investor.
      When you pitch to VCs\, do you know what VCs hear when you speak? Do you present what VCs actually want to know -- or merely communicate your passion for your product? The VC Taskforce is pleased to offer a Company Presentation workshop for executives responsible for crafting and delivering the company's investor pitch. Our goal: bridging the communications gap between what CEOs want to say and what VCs want to hear.
      Learn what the key 'must have' elements are in a 'perfect pitch'. Learn what the most serious red flags are that lead to early disqualification. What makes a great story? How do VCs distinguish a great technology from a great company? A great company from a great investment?
      Dr. Ronald Weissman\, our session leader\, has been an active Silicon Valley VC (Apax Partners) and angel investor (Band of Angels) and has trained many executives in understanding how VCs think and evaluate deals. As a VC\, he has critiqued hundreds of pitches and as a former executive\, delivered many pitches in Silicon Valley and on Wall Street.
      Presenter & Coach: Dr. Ronald Weissman\, Apax Partners and Band of Angels
      Please note: Space is limited\, register early!
