The work exists in two forms\, one with full orchestral accompaniment\, the second for organ and six instruments\, which is the version we will perform. In 1876 Edvard Greig wrote the incidental music for Henrik Ibsen’s play ‘Peer Gynt’ and many of the pieces became very popular as piano concertos and orchestral suites. The words are by Ibsen and are sung in Norwegian. Partsongs are harmonised melodies written for a full choir during the nineteenth century.
