It also won the Gold Award in the Third International Music Festival held in Australia. Prior to her return to the Bay Area in 1996\, Stephanie was a Lecturer in Voice at the Chinese University of Hong Kong\, and the Head of Musicianship Department of the Junior School at the Hong Kong Academy for the Performing Arts. When you look closely\, you find more similarities than differences.” Hay first landed on American shores as the frontman and principal songwriter of the pop sensation Men at Work. With Hay's wry songs and burnished vocals leading the way\, they were responsible for a series of massive hits\, such as “Down Under\,” “Who Can It Be Now?” and “Overkill\,” that defined pop music of the early eighties. Men at Work were also one of the first pop icons of the video era\, with Hay's distinct visage gracing a number of intriguing\, humorous videos that aired endlessly in the early days of MTV. Well\, maybe my wife.” Cecilia Noel & the Wild Clams Cecilia Noël is passionate\, flamboyant\, exotic\, and incredible talented - and on her aptly titled new CD A Gozár! (to enjoy)\, she demonstrates why critics have long called her the “Latin Tina Turner.” “Salsoul”\, the genre Noël created to describe her sound\, combines elements of salsa\, soul\, jazz\, funk\, and afro-cuban. Featuring smoking hot Latin grooves laced with rapid-fire Spanish lyrics\, A Gozár! is a manifestation of Noël's love of music and dance and a dedication to her family in her native Perú. Noël wanted the CD to be “something that you can put on at your party and dance to\, take a little break to dance to the ballad cheek-to-cheek and then dance some more.” Close to her extended family back in Perú\, Noël hopes\, more than anything\, that this album makes them proud. “In 1996\,” she says\, “I went to Perú and I saw how important it was to them that I was living my vision and inspiring them\, and the money I make - all of that money goes back to them. That re-energized me and motivated me to put this album together.” The tracks on A Gozár! range from tributes to some of the great Salsa and Cuban artists of the past\, to Noël's originals\, and some of her favorite long-time standards. Written by Rafael Hernández\, one of the most prolific Puerto Rican composers\, “El Cumbanchero” references the “party man” or percussionist. Her choice to record the song was made at the request of her mentally handicapped cousin\, Mateo\, who has repeatedly asked her to add it to an album. “La Culebra” is a Cuban standard that has been part of Noël's repertoire for many years. It was originally done by Benny Moré\, a famous Cuban band leader and singer in the early 1960's. “La Cumbita” is a tribute to the Fania All-Stars (of which Celia Cruz was a member). Put together by Jerry Masucci and Johnny Pacheco\, the band created the salsa movement in the US in the 1970's. The name of Ismael Miranda's “Asi Se Compone Un Son“ translates to “how to write a groove”. The lyrics\, says Noël\, “speak to mixing ingredients and cooking slowly because otherwise you'll spoil the recipe. You have to make it perfect so that the dancers who are not professionals can feel the groove.” While “Candela” is “just a little song about fire and flirting with men”\, Noël covers heavier topics in “Tu Condena” which talks about the weight carried by those who betray their friends and “Bolero de Salon” which\, Noël says\, “is the song I imagine my father singing to my mom. My father would drink a lot and this is a song of him regretting that”. Originally recorded in Spanish on Noël's Bongoland album\, “Carlito's Way”\, was written for the 1993 mafia film of the same name. While it didn't make the soundtrack\, it remains as one of the originals Noël is most proud of. A Gozár!\, says Noël\, “is the soundtrack of my life in a way. These are the songs I've enjoyed singing the most\, the ones that get people up and really dancing\, and the ones that really blow people away. I call what I do “hardcore salsa' because nowadays there is a lot of romantic salsa but I'm more of a punk salsa singer. I hope people will appreciate the intensity and the passion of this record. It's not lightweight\; I'm the Nine Inch Nails of salsa.” Originally from Lima\, Perú\, Noël's career began at the age of eight with a starring role in a Perúvian television show called “El Tío Johnny”. As a teenager\, Noël's mother Menina Pereira sent her to Argentina and Germany to take voice\, violin\, and piano lessons. Encouraged by the legendary Stan Getz to move to the US\, Noël relocated to New York City and briefly performed as a dancer with Jo Jo's Dance Factory and Menudo. Noël moved to Los Angeles in 1989\, shortly getting involved in the local artistic movement and in the early 1990s\, formed Cecilia Noël and The Wild Clams. A James Brown meets Pérez Prado band\, The Wild Clams received quick attention for their explosive live shows and were consequently booked at the House of Blues and the Playboy Jazz Festival. Longtime fans of “America's favorite little big band” will immediately recognize the album as a milestone in Big Bad Voodoo Daddy's multi platinum-selling sixteen-year career. “Making the album was one of our biggest musical moments\,” says lead vocalist\, guitarist and songwriter Scotty Morris\, who co-founded Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (BBVD) with drummer Kurt Sodergren in southern California. “Delving into Cab's songs made us all realize how relevant they were to our time\, and working on someone else's music inside out caused a growth and depth in my work as a songwriter\, arranger\, and producer.” How Big Can You Get is not only an illuminating revival of Cab Calloway's songbook: the making of the album was also the revelation of a lifetime for the band as a whole\, whose ensemble playing\, arranging and interpretive powers were honed to an all-time high by the excellence of Calloway's songs. Trumpeter Glen “The Kid” Marhevka recalls being captivated by Calloway onstage as a seventh-grader: “I was 11 years old\, and I was blown away\; he had so much energy and so many great musicians. This album concept seemed a perfect fit for us\, because of Cab's visuals\, performances and intense energy. As soon as we rehearsed and played these songs live\, it was musically challenging and refreshing to all of us.” Recorded in Los Angeles' legendary Capitol Studios\, located at the famous record-shaped building at Hollywood and Vine\, How Big Can You Get came out of the rooms where innumerable classics had been recorded by Frank Sinatra\, Dean Martin\, Nelson Riddle\, Billy May\, and many others. Using Capitol's vintage microphones and studio equipment\, “we achieved a real marriage of his music and our arrangements and the group's voice\,” says Morris. The vibed-up excitement is unmistakable throughout the album: “We played songs top-to-bottom live\, and chose the best takes for the album\, because so many of Cab's definitive performances are live in films and radio broadcasts. This is the best and most ferocious we've ever sounded.” With the band's stated mission to broaden the image of Cab Calloway beyond his signature tune\, “Minnie the Moocher” (a BBVD live staple from the beginning)\, Calloway's frequently hilarious -- and just as often socially aware -- material held its own keys to completing the album in a way that did justice to him. “‘How Big Can You Get' was the first song we cut with the big band in Capitol's Studio A\,” says Morris. “Hearing the playback\, we immediately felt that this was what the band was always meant to sound like.” He adds: “ ‘Call of the Jitterbug’ seems like a fun little tune to put up\, but then you get into it and see how complex\, intricate and stylized it is. To hear that with new material is really satisfying - and a relief!” The twelve songs on Major Lodge Victory deliver that same signature blend of melody\, mystery and poignancy that Gin Blossoms fans have come to love -- from the band's breakthrough album\, New Miserable Experience through to its powerful follow-up Congratulations\, I'm Sorry and such enduring and memorable songs as “Hey Jealousy\,” “Allison Road\,” “Follow You Down” and “Til I Hear It From You.” Since Wilson\, guitarists Jesse Valenzuela and Scott Johnson and bassist Bill Leen reunited as the Gin Blossoms in 2002\, the idea of recording new songs was something the group thought about but didn't want to force. “I wanted it to happen organically\,” Valenzuela says. “And it did.” Successful tour dates demonstrated that the many fans who cherished New Miserable Experience (which has sold more than four million copies in the U.S.) and Congratulations\, I'm Sorry (which has sold more than one million) were still eager to hear more from the band. So were their younger brothers and sisters. “I didn't even know if we could get back together\,” Leen says. “I didn't know we'd have a fan base. I think it helped that our songs never left the radio.” Truly\, on the radio it was as if the Gin Blossoms had never left\, even as all the band's members moved on to other projects. And getting back together proved satisfying. “A lot of fans came up to us and said\, ‘I loved you guys for so long\, and I was so bummed when you broke up and I never got to hear you play. I'm so glad you're back\,'” Johnson says. “That was gratifying. Now I respond by saying\, ‘You're going to hear us a lot more!” To record Major Lodge Victory\, the band members began working in their native state of Arizona\, but ended up returning to Ardent Studios in Memphis\, where they had made their previous two albums. “It felt like we were going home\,” Wilson says. Drummer Scott Kusmirek\, who had played with the band for a time after it reunited\, joined the group in the studio. Meanwhile\, Valenzuela had been busy writing songs. “I wrote a bunch\, probably around thirty\,” he says\, laughing\, “though there are some types of songs the Gin Blossoms won't do. They're not much for dirges. Not too many blues references either.” “We are addicted to fast tempos\,” Leen admits. Hence the irresistibly catchy “Learning the Hard Way\,” which Valenzuela wrote. “That's a classic Gin Blossoms song\,” Wilson says\, evoking the band's Tempe\, Arizona club roots. Valenzuela also wrote the soaring ballad “Someday Soon.” “I was hesitant to bring that one to the Blossoms\,” he says. “I didn't know if they'd want to do something at that tempo. But I'm glad we did it. It came out really nice.” Wilson brought in the energetic rocker “Come On Hard\,” while the two men collaborated on “The End of the World\,” with its lush choruses and Beatles-style harmonies. We're a bit older.
