SUMMARY:SDForum Quarterly Venture Breakfast with PWC: 'Go West Young VC: US Venture Firms Go Abroad'
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/1077751/ ] The Quarterly Venture Breakfast Series in collaboration with PWC\, will discuss trends in venture investments in "Go West Young VC: US Venture Firms Go Abroad".
Silicon Valley is still the center of the investing universe but many people think that will change in the next 10-20 years. At current growth rates VC investment in China will equal the entire US in about 7 years. In a world where talent\, not money\, is the resource in short supply\, won't the countries with the most engineers (read India and China) win? The current US immigration policies seem to be speeding up the process. In some of the hottest sectors\, like clean tech\, over half the deals are already outside the US. Come hear what our panel of experts has to say about globalization and how it will affect us.
      Agenda:
      8:00am-8:30am Registration and Breakfast
      8:30am-8:45am Introductions
      8:45am-9:00am Overview with Steve Bengston
9:00am-9:45am Panel Discussion: "Go West Young VC: US Venture Firms Go Abroad"
                     Steve Bengston\, PriceWaterhouseCoopers
                     Tim Chang\, Norwest Venture Partners

SUMMARY:Andy Lichterman of WSLF on High-tech Militarism and Global Crises
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/1118541/ ] Against a background of economic\, military and political upheaval\, the U.S. continues to pursue a strategy of developing nuclear weapons\, missile defense systems and the militarization of space. The support in Congress for various kinds of advanced weaponry has been less than it was during the Cold War\, a fact no doubt owing much to that era's decline. But the plethora of global crises has prompted a strong push by the U.S government and military to show its strength in a most familiar guise - its military power. We have seen in a post-cold-war world a series of pulling back from disarmament treaties as well as missed opportunities at new treaties\, while the U.S. military\, despite calls for disarmament by people as unlikely as Henry Kissinger\, aims for development of global superiority through advanced weapons systems.
On Tuesday\, October 7\, during the annual Keep Space for Peace Week\, Andy Lichterman\, Program Director for the anti-nuclear weapons organization Western States Legal Foundation\, will explore our country's efforts to dominate the rest of the world militarily. Lichterman will make connections between the development of such destabilizing hardware as space weapons and missile defense systems\, and our standing on the world stage. "The question\," he says\, is 'what's it all about?'" That is\, what is our government - and weapons contractors such as Lockheed-Martin and Raytheon - hoping for? The question for the audience is very likely to be\, "what does this strategy mean\, and what should we as citizens have to say about it?"
Peace Action of San Mateo County will present this free public event at 7:30 PM on October 7 at Beck Hall of the Unitarian Universalists of San Mateo\, 300 E. Santa Inez Avenue (at Ellsworth) in San Mateo. Beck Hall is wheelchair accessible.
      Free.

SUMMARY:Kitka: Lullabies and Songs of Childhood
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/1109073/ ] The gentle rhythms\, lilting melodies\, and poetic texts of traditional Eastern European lullabies give voice to the innermost psyche of a mother. Through this voice\, a child is ushered to the gateways of dreams\, language\, and culture.
For this adult-oriented concert program\, Kitka\, the Bay Area's internationally acclaimed women's vocal ensemble\, has researched\, collected and arranged a stunning set of Balkan\, Slavic\, and Eurasian cradle songs. To complement these lullabies in concert\, Kitka will also perform songs sung by children at all stages of their life cycle: playful songs sung by the young\; songs sung by grown children confiding in or remembering their parents\; and songs that reflect on youth and aging. Traditional pieces learned directly from native folk song masters will be woven together with innovative choral arrangements by Kitka members and other contemporary composers.
Kitka began in 1979 as a grassroots group of singers from diverse ethnic and musical backgrounds who shared a passion for the stunning dissonances\, asymmetric rhythms\, intricate ornamentation\, lush harmonies\, and resonant strength of Eastern European women's vocal traditions. Since its beginnings\, the group has evolved into a professional touring ensemble that has earned worldwide recognition for its artistry\, versatility\, and fresh approach to folk music. Kitka has recently been featured in national media including PRI's "The World"\, NPR's "The Story"\, WNYC's "New Sounds"\, and National Geographic's "World Music Profiles". A TV special "Kitka and Davka in Concert" has aired on more than 80 PBS stations nationwide and has been shown at film festivals from Beijing to Toronto. This year Kitka released "Sanctuary: A Cathedral Concert". Kitka will record highlights from "Lullabies and Songs of Childhood" this fall for a 2009 CD Release.
Kitka's Lullabies and Songs of Childhood Project\, is supported\, in part\, by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.
      General: $20 advance/$25 door Seniors & Students: $18 adv./ $20 door.
