SUMMARY:ATC presents Hasan Elahi: 'Tracking Transcience: The Orwell Project'
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/1180408/ ] On Monday\, October 13\, digital media artist Hasan Elahi will describe his experiences with FBI interrogation and his subsequent art project in a public lecture\, "Tracking Transience: The Orwell Project\," part of UC Berkeley's ongoing Art\, Technology\, and Culture Colloquium (ATC).
After an erroneous tip called into law enforcement authorities in 2002\, Elahi was subjected to an intensive post 9-11 investigation by the FBI. After undergoing months of interrogations and nine lie-detector tests\, he was cleared of suspicions. After this harrowing experience\, Elahi conceived "Tracking Transience" (http://trackingtransience.net)\, a self-tracking system that constantly and publicly presents his exact location\, activities\, and other personal data. This self-surveillance project is a critique of contemporary investigative techniques and provides an ongoing "alibi" for Elahi in the event of future accusations.
Hasan Elahi is an interdisciplinary artist whose work examines issues of surveillance\, simulated time\, transport systems\, borders\, and frontiers. His work has been presented in numerous exhibitions at venues such as the Centre Georges Pompidou\, Sundance Film Festival\, Kassel Kulturbahnhof\, The Hermitage\, and at the Venice Biennale. Elahi recently was invited to speak about his work at the Tate Modern\, Einstein Forum\, and at the American Association of Artificial Intelligence. His work has been supported with significant grants from the Creative Capital Foundation\, Ford Foundation/Philip Morris\, and the Asociacion Artetik Berrikuntzara in Donostia-San Sebastian in the Basque Country/Spain. Currently\, he is an Assistant Professor at San Jose State University.
      Free.

SUMMARY:Queer Bodies in Psychotherapy Conference
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/1144792/ ] Public Programs at CIIS presents this groundbereaking conference as part of a wide range of programs that spark inspiration and dialogue on a variety of important issues. Queer Bodies in Psychotherapy calls attention to queer sexualities\, identities\, and practices that are inadequately addressed in both psychodynamic and somatic psychologies.
Work with queer populations has been undertheorized\, undersupervised\, and underdeveloped in both talk therapy and body-oriented psychotherapies. This conference will question and explore ideas concerning how queer sexualities\, identities\, and lifestyles can be imagined\, held\, facilitated\, and explored in various educational and therapeutic contexts.
The Queer Bodies in Psychotherapy Conference is an opportunity for LGBTQI and straight therapists\, queer theorists\, somatic therapists and practitioners\, members of various queer communities\, scholars\, activists\, and educators to surface questions\, develop theories\, share case examples\, and explore best practices in this emerging field. The Somatic Psychology Department at CIIS is organizing this conference as part of our ongoing commitment to exploring issues of embodied difference\, marginalization\, and the sociocultural understandings of somatic formation.
The conference\, which begins with a special performance of "Sex/Body/Self" by Tim Miller and culminates with a keynote address\, "Show Me Your ID\," by poet and activist Jewelle Gomez\, will feature more than 20 workshops and lectures\, including topics that address cultural meanings of gender and sexuality\, HIV/AIDS across queer generations\, queer parenting/families\, as well as the healing potential of BDSM.
The conference is cosponsored by CUAV - Community United Against Violence\; Jewish Mosiac: The National Center for Gender and Sexual Diversity\; Maia Midwifery and Preconception Services\; New Leaf: Services for our Community\; Pacific Center\; The Psychotherapy Institutute\; Women's Therapy Center\; and Visual Aid.
$225 for Conference\; $25 for Tim Miller Performance (Limited Number of Tickets Available).

SUMMARY:Interactive TV @ the Brickhouse: Challenges for Next-Generation Video Sharing Systems
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/1186137/ ] Challenges for Next-Generation Video Sharing Systems
Content Modelling\, Social Networks\, and Context Awareness
      6:00 - 6:30 PM Socializing
6:30 - 7:15 PM Presentation by Pablo Cesar
      7:15 - 7:30 PM Discussion
      7:30 - 8:00 PM Socializing
       All are welcome!
** Please RSVP to HERE \, snacks and drinks will be served but space is limited. **
Talk Abstract: Media consumption is an inherently social activity\, serving to communicate ideas and emotions across both small- and large-scale communities. The migration of the media experience to personal computers retains social viewing\, but typically only via a non-social\, strictly personal interface. As a discussion starter we survey previous efforts such as social interactive television\, WebTV interfaces\, and online video sharing systems. The purpose of such interactive discussion is to identify key factors for next-generation video sharing systems: content modelling\, the implications and benefits of social networks\, and the importance of the contextual settings of the viewer to distribute and control video material. Finally\, we present an architecture and implementation for media content selection\, content (re)organization\, and content sharing within a user community that is heterogeneous in terms of both participants and devices. The system as well allows the user to enrich the content as a differentiated personalization activity targeted to his/her peer-group. The final goal of the session is to identify future directions for improving share experiences around media consumption.
Speaker Bio: Pablo Cesar is a postdoctoral researcher at CWI (The National Research Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science in the Netherlands) in Amsterdam. He received a Dr. Tech. degree (December 2005) from Helsinki University of Technology (Finland) and a M. Sc. degree (February 2002) from Universidad Politecnica de Madrid (Spain). Pablo Cesar has (co)authored over 40 of articles (conference papers and journal articles) about multimedia systems and infrastructures\, media sharing\, interactive media\, multimedia content modelling\, and user interaction. He is\, as well\, involved in standardization activities (e.g.\, SMIL from W3C). He is co-editor of the book "Social Interactive Television: Immersive Shared Experiences and Perspectives" and of the TOMCCAP special issue "Human-Centred Television: Directions in Interactive Digital Television Research". In addition\, he was the general chair of the 5th European Interactive conference (EuroITV2007) and has given tutorials about Interactive Digital Television in prestigious conferences such as ACM Multimedia and WWW Conferences.

SUMMARY:Ask a Scientist [topic: surviving in space]
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/1105224/ ] THIS MONTH'S TOPIC: Surviving in Space
Long-range space travel brings a new set of challenges to the already formidable mission of sending humans out into space. Now that the U.S. is ramping up plans to send astronauts back to the moon and eventually on to Mars\, NASA scientists must figure out how to supply crews with air\, food\, and water for stretches of months\, and even years\, at a time. The cost of shipping water into space\, for example\, will shut down a Tang party pretty quickly — every pound of water consumed in orbit costs around $10\,000. To meet such challenges\, researchers like Sherwin Gormly and his colleagues are coming up with inventive ways to recycle in an enclosed space habitat. Arguably the most intriguing example is a 10-pound machine that turns urine into drinking water using processes that duplicate those that occur in nature. Pee-licious! Come find out what Sherwin has to tell us about all aspects of exploration life support\, and how such innovations could impact real-world conservation efforts here at home.
ABOUT THE SERIES: Ask a Scientist is an informative\, entertaining\, monthly lecture series\, held at a San Francisco cafe. Each event features a speaker on a scientific topic\, a short presentation\, and the opportunity to ask all those burning questions that have been keeping you up at night. No tests\, grades\, or pressure…just food\, drinks\, socializing\, and conversation about the universe’s most fascinating mysteries. http://www.askascientistSF.com
