Titled ‘Cellissimo!’ the concert will feature the brilliant Canadian cello sensation Denise Djokic. Orchestra’s Music Director Nurhan Arman will conduct.
      The soaring melodies of Saint-Saens’ Cello Concerto in A Minor and Shostakovich’s Sinfonia op. 73 will be heard\, along with Sonatina and Partita Danzante  by Czech composer Jan Slimacek. 
      One of the most captivating young artists of her generation\, Cellist Denise Djokic has thrilled audiences and critics worldwide with the passion\, vigor\, and sensitivity of her playing.
      Already one of North America's most sought after soloists\, she has performed as guest soloist with every leading orchestra in Canada\, including the orchestras of Toronto\, Vancouver\, Montreal\, Calgary\, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra. She has also appeared with many orchestras in the United States and in Mexico\, including the Buffalo Philharmonic\, Omaha Symphony\, Santa Cruz Symphony\, and the Orquesta Filharmonica UNAM of Mexico City.
      As a recitalist and chamber musician\, Denise performs throughout North America and Europe. She has performed at the Phillips Collection and the museum for Women in the Arts in Washington\, D.C.\, and has also performed in San Francisco\, Cologne\, Mexico City\, San Miguel de Allende\, at Chicago's Dame Myra Hess Series\, at Bargemusic and with the Jupiter Symphony Chamber Players in New York\, in addition to all major Canadian centers. Her avid involvement in chamber music brings her to many festivals yearly\, including the chamber festivals of Caramoor\, Ottawa\, Vancouver\, Park City\, Parry Sound\, Domaine Forget\, and Ravinia.
      Denise has toured Canada extensively\, during which she was featured as the subject of the documentary film "Seven Days\, Seven Nights"\, which aired on Bravo TV and was screened at the Atlantic Film Festival. She was also named by MacLean's magazine as one of "25 Young Canadians who are changing our World"\, and by ELLE magazine as one of "Canada's 30 most Powerful Women".
      Denise's debut recording was released in 2002 on the Sony Classical label to great critical acclaim\, and won her an East Coast Music Award for "Best Classical Recording of the Year". During the same year\, Denise was a featured performer at the 2002 Grammy Awards. She recently released her second recording\, entitled "Folklore"\, on the Allegro/Endeavor label\, which was featured on NPR's renowned "All Things Considered" program.
      Born in Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, into a large musical family\, Denise began her studies with Olive Shaw and Shimon Walt. She is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music's "Young Artist Program"\, where she was a student of Richard Aaron\, and later continued her studies in Boston with Paul Katz and Laurence Lesser.

      The concert titled ‘Transfigured Night’ will feature the brilliant Canadian pianist Darrett Zusko. Mr. Zusko will perform Liszt’s Piano Concerto  E major.
      The orchestra will perform a sparkling Haydn Divertimento and Schoenberg’s romantic Transfigured Night.
      Hailed for his "…powerful technique and sonority"\, "exceptional musicality and virtuosity"\, and for his ability to achieve "effects on an orchestral scale"\, 22-year-old Canadian pianist Darrett Zusko continues to establish himself as one of today's most important young concert artists. Having thrilled audiences and critics alike with his passionate and electrifying performances\, Mr. Zusko has already been repeatedly engaged as soloist with many of today's leading orchestras including the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra\, the Montréal Symphony Orchestra\, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra\, the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra\, and the Louisiana Philharmonic among many others.
      A top prizewinner at the prestigious Montréal International Musical Competition and the New Orleans International Piano Competition\, he is also the recipient of numerous other awards including the first prize and people's choice award at the Canadian Music Competitions International Stepping Stone\, first prize at the Bartók-Kabalevsky-Prokofiev International Piano Competition and first prize at the Oberlin International Piano Competition. 
      In recent seasons\, notable venues he has performed at with orchestra and in recital include Roy Thomson Hall\, Massey Hall\, Place des Arts\, Glenn Gould Studio\, the St. Lawrence Center for the Performing Arts\, Salle Pierre Mercure\, Salle Desjardins-Telus and many others. He has toured across Canada for Jeunesses Musicales\, appeared at the Festival of the Sound as soloist and with the Allegri String Quartet\, at Festival Vancouver with the Borealis String Quartet\, at the Guelph Spring Festival\, at the Collingwood Summer Music Festival\, and as well at the Gijón International Piano Festival in Spain as guest artist in recital and with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Gijón performing Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto under the direction of Oliver Díaz. A large number of Mr. Zusko's performances have as well been frequently broadcast on CBC Radio's In Performance\, Symphony Hall\, Music Around Us\, Espace Musique\, and on CBC Television across Canada.
      Born in Windsor Ontario\, Darrett Zusko began studying the piano at the age of four. He has since worked with such distinguished artists as Barry Snyder\, Jerome Lowenthal\, Anton Kuerti\, Boris Slutsky\, Daniel Shapiro\, Marek Jablonski\, Leon Fleisher and Dominique Weber to name but a few. For seven years he took lessons with Dr. Gregory Butler in Windsor and prior to college studied extensively with renowned pianist Ronald Turini\, one of the few privileged students of the legendary Vladimir Horowitz. He has now completed a Diploma at the Juilliard School in New York and is currently enrolled in their Graduate Diploma program where he is a student of Julian Martin.

DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/778224/ ] The final concert of Sinfonia Toronto’s Masterpiece Series for 2008-2009 will be held on Friday\, May 8\, at the Grace Church on-the-Hill (300 Lonsdale Road) under the baton of Nurhan Arman. 
      The concert titled ‘Nostalgia’ will feature the great Canadian violin virtuoso Alexandre Da Costa. He will be heard in Kreisler’s beloved violin favourites.
      Music Director Nurhan Arman will conduct Mozart’s ‘The Hunt’ and Dvorak’s Slavonic Dances\, one of composer’s most beautiful and folkloric works. Canadian composer Heather Schmidt’s beautiful Serenade will receive its Canadian premiere.
      ALEXANDRE DA COSTA was born in Montreal\, Canada\, in 1979. He showed an uncommon interest for both the violin and piano at a very early age. By the age of nine\, he had the astounding ability to perform his first concerts with stunning virtuosity on both instruments\, which brought him recognition as a musical prodigy. His chosen professional career as a violinist began very early and he was soon performing regularly as soloist with orchestra as well as in recital.
      In 1998\, at the age of 18\, he received a Master’s degree in violin and a First Prize from the Conservatoire de Musique du Québec where he studied with Johanne Arel. Concurrently\, he also received a Bachelor’ s degree in Piano Interpretation from the faculty of music of the University of Montreal. From 1998 to 2001\, he studied at the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofia in Madrid with the violin master Zakhar Bron\, teacher of violinists such as Maxim Vengerov and Vadim Repin. In 2002\, he won the Sylva Gelber Foundation Award for best Canadian artist under 30 years old. Between 2003 and 2006\, after winning the Musical Instrument Bank competition of the Canada Council for the Arts\, he played the 1689 Baumgartner Stradivarius.
      Winner of many prestigious national and international first prizes\, he appeared as soloist in nearly 1000 concerts throughout Canada\, the United States\, Mexico\, France\, Germany\, Austria\, the United Kingdom\, the Czech Republic\, Spain\, Portugal\, Poland\, Romania\, Japan\, China\, Taiwan\, etc. Alexandre Da Costa performed in major halls such as Vienna’s Musikverein\, Berlin’s Philharmonie\, Hamburg’s Musikhalle\, Madrid’s National Auditorium\, Beijing’s Poly Theater\, etc.\, and played with prestigious orchestras such as the London Royal Philharmonic\, the Bergen Philharmonic\, the Berlin Symphony\, the Hamburg Symphony\, the Vienna Symphony\, the Montreal Symphony\, the Toronto Symphony\, etc. 
      His latest CD release\, Vivaldi Four Seasons with the chamber orchestra of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra\, was received with a very warm enthusiasm by the press and the public. Other recordings include Mozart’s violin & viola duos\, concerti by Tchaikovsky & Bruch\, Bach & Ysaye solo sonatas\, Spanish works by Turina\, de Falla\, Nin\, Albeniz\, etc.
