      Many in the United States -- and around the world -- are rightly celebrating the coming end of eight years of reactionary rule in Washington. But politics is more than elections. Where should people concerned with social justice and ecological sustainability focus our attention during the Obama administration? What long-term vision should inform our short-term choices? Writer and activist Robert Jensen will discuss how we should analyze the contemporary problems we face\, articulate a vision for the future\, and act on those ideas in the coming year. 
      Robert Jensen is a journalism professor at the University of Texas at Austin and board member of the Third Coast Activist Resource Center. His latest book\, All My Bones Shake\, will be published in 2009 by Soft Skull Press. He also is the author of Getting Off: Pornography and the End of Masculinity (South End Press\, 2007)\; The Heart of Whiteness: Confronting Race\, Racism and White Privilege (City Lights\, 2005)\; Citizens of the Empire: The Struggle to Claim Our Humanity (City Lights\, 2004)\; and Writing Dissent: Taking Radical Ideas from the Margins to the Mainstream (Peter Lang\, 2002).

      Dr. Preston McEachern will present on the Alberta Environment policies in place for protecting\, monitoring\, and restoring the environment.
      His presentation will update us on the current environmental status of the Fort McMurray area\, and the quality and quantity of water in the Athabasca River.
      He will comment on future technologies (like carbon sequestration) and their potential implications for curbing global warming.
      Dr. McEachern will also discuss "myths and mis-information that organizations like the COC spread\, which are not helpful in the on-going public discussion."
