      Abstract:
      Two major themes are driving the invention and adoption of technologies in physical\, bricks-and-mortar retail: (1) the need to make the physical retail experience as trackable\, analysable and steerable as the online experience\, and (2) the redesign of retail environments by customer type. In this talk\, Albert Wong of IBM will survey the leading new retail technologies (including ecash\, guided selling\, radio frequency identification\, and near field communications)\, and explain how they are being deployed by major retailers such as Best Buy\, Walgreens\, 7-Eleven\, McDonalds\, Marks and Spencer\, and Virgin. Mr. Wong will also cover the software and hardware infrastructure developed to support those emerging technologies. 
      Bio: Mr. Wong is an IT Architect with IBM Retail On Demand Emerging Business Opportunities (EBO)\, an IBM skunkworks charged with increasing IBM's business and technical solutions within the retail industry. He was formerly with the IBM Global Services Linux and Grid EBO\, building IBM's initial entry into the Linux and Grid Computing market\, and with IBM Global Services Application Services and IBM Sales and Distribution Technical Sales Support. Mr. Wong's experience spans the spectrum of IT business and technical development\, including technical pre-sales\, solution design and implementation\, offering development\, and ecosystem enablement.       Since 1996\, David has been using and devising web development tools.  As CTO of CMP Media\, David oversaw the first large-scale deployment of WebLogic.   David was CTO and VPE at Cenzic\, a web application security company.  David has also developed numerous commercial projects in Ruby on Rails.
      In 2007\, David founded the Lift Web Framework open source project.  Lift is an expressive and elegant framework for writing web applications. Lift stresses the importance of security\, maintainability\, scalability and performance\, while allowing for high levels of developer productivity. Lift open source software licensed under an Apache 2.0 license.
      David is a consultant in San Francisco and works on Lift-based projects including Buy a Feature (http://buyafeature.com) and ESME (http://esme.us)

SUMMARY:Project Management SIG: SysML/UML Modeling for Project Management
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/1471973/ ] This talk discusses the feasibility of applying the Systems Modeling Language (SysML) to project management.
      Project Management is largely concerned with understanding\, coordinating and communicating information about a variety of heterogeneous entities and their behavior to achieve a desired outcome. These are substantially the same attributes defining Systems Engineering which manages technical integration across multiple engineering disciplines.
      System Engineering is now moving toward a model based approach for rendering system information. This entails placing those artifacts in a database and expressing them\, their relationships and behavior in a semantically consistent fashion. The enabling technology for this effort is the recently introduced open specification called the Systems Modeling Language (SysML).
      This approach offers several important benefits\, including:
         1. Maintainability in a volatile environment
         2. Consistency across the system
         3. Multiple views into the system meeting different stakeholder needs.
      In short\, all stakeholders have a consistent understanding of the project: who\, what\, how\, why and when. The expectation is that this approach results in systems having fewer errors and shorter development times.

      Murphy was an optimist! Many obstacles conspire to decelerate projects\, from unsupportive stakeholders to lack of understanding of the plan by team members. This talk will discuss a very successful approach to accelerate through these obstacles.
      Description: Projects are faced with many challenges and obstacles that contribute to their slower-than-desired performance. Stakeholders are unsupportive or even opposed to the project. The scope is not clear\, the plan confusing\, the execution less than crisp\, resources are lacking\, or the quality is less than stellar. A major F100 company in Silicon Valley faced these challenges in its semiconductor development efforts and overcame it through a special approach which accelerates projects by 30-50%. This approach\, documented in No Surprises Project Management by Timm Esque\, has been refined and applied to software development projects at another major Silicon Valley company. Now dubbed "Commitment Based Project Management"\, Mr. Solera will describe how he refined and applied this approach\, exceeding his customers' expectations while coordinating five parallel project tracks.

      At Bootstrappers Breakfast we have serious conversations about growing a business based on internal cashflow. This is not for entrepreneurs who want to meet VCs\, this is for founders who are actively bootstrapping a startup. We meet in the back room at several Silicon Valley restaurants so space is limited.
      These breakfasts are facilitated by SKMurphy\, Inc. as a service to the Silicon Valley bootstrapper community\, so there is no sales pitch from us or anyone else who attends.  The first breakfast was held at Coco's in the heart of Silicon Valley in 2005.  Since that time\, they have grown to multiple locations through out the Bay Area.
