SUMMARY:VC TaskForce - Cleantech Forum\, China Cross Border Investment
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4769816/ ] Our Fifth Forum: Cross Border Investment
Through concerted governmental efforts\, China has positioned itself to potentially become the first "green" superpower. Not only has it set an ambitious goal of generating 15% of its electricity from renewable energy by 2020\, it has supported that goal through a number of national incentive programs\, including a nationwide feed-in-tariff program to incentivize wind power production\, and programs to promote rooftop solar applications and award tariffs for utility scale ground mounted solar power plants. In the area of energy efficiency\, China has adopted fuel economy standards that outpace those of the U.S.
Where do foreign investors fit into this scheme\, especially in light of the recent rebound in cleantech venture investment globally? While China officially "encourages" foreign investment in such areas as clean energy production and the manufacturing of clean technology equipment and products\, recent regulatory changes have made it more difficult for foreign investors to utilize traditional "offshore" structures to invest in Chinese companies and signaled a preference for strategic or purely onshore investment by foreign investors. The panel discussion will offer insights into the recent changes in the economic and regulatory landscape of the China cleantech sector\, and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
 Topics include:
The strategic significance of the cleantech industry for China's economy.
Current trends and opportunities for foreign investment in China's cleantech sector.
The significance of\, prospects for and challenges in technology transfer and intellectual property protection in China's cleantech sector.
Key issues in structuring cleantech deals in China.
 Exit strategies -onshore or offshore?
Similarities and differences between the cleantech industry in China and the U.S.
 Moderator and Panelists:
The panel will be announced shortly

SUMMARY:Sell Your Product Ideas
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4869044/ ] Featured Speaker
Alan Adler\, Inventor and CEO of Aerobie\, Inc.\, will share his experience licensing and venturing his product ideas
During the 70's and early 80's while working as a consulting engineer and teaching part time at Stanford University\, Alan Adler invented toys in his spare time and licensed his ideas to toy companies. Alan was also an avid sailor who taught himself aerodynamics in order to be able to design sailboats. His love of inventing toys and his new found knowledge of aerodynamics led him into the pursuit of better flying toys.

Alan designed and built the first prototype of the Aerobie ring with its spoiler rim that balances lift over a wide range of throwing speeds in early 1984. The first throw of the Aerobie ring on Roble Field at Stanford showed Alan he had something special. The ring flew straight and true for an incredible distance\, "as if sliding on an invisible sheet of ice."
Alan knew the Aerobie ring could be a hit. He also knew the flying performance of the Aerobie ring was going to be dependent on maintaining aerospace quality standards in the manufacturing processes. He therefore founded Superflight\, Inc. (now Aerobie\, Inc.) in 1984 to manufacture and sell his high performance sport toy inventions beginning with the Aerobie flying ring. For its first 20 years of existence\, Aerobie Inc. was officially named Superflight\, Inc. However\, in recognition of the fact that all of the products were named Aerobie and everybody knew the company as Aerobie\, as of 2005\, his company's name is officially Aerobie\, Inc.

The company is still owned by Alan and he still works on inventing new\, exciting sport toys. He now manufactures thirteen Aerobie brand products and sells them through retailers throughout the United States and to distributors in over thirty countries. All Aerobie brand sport toys are known for their extraordinary performance and quality. His warehousing\, packing\, and shipping are all done in San Carlos\, California.

SUMMARY:Power in the Economy: Affordable engineering & technology solutions
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4594895/ ] The UK energy system is under increasing pressure and requires substantial upgrading and replacement to tackle the combined challenges of climate change (principally Carbon Dioxide emissions)\, energy affordability and security of supply. Addressing these challenges requires changes to the UK power generation\, transmission and distribution systems and\, critically\, demands that we ensure that every unit of energy is used as efficiently as possible and forms part of a long-term sustainable system. We will only properly achieve this if all sectors are involved – Power\, Heat\, Transport and their supporting infrastructures.
UK Government has estimated that an investment of around £100bn will be required to reach the UK target for 15% of all energy to come from renewable sources by 2020. Currently less than 3% comes from renewable sources. Further major investments will also be necessary to reach the 2050 UK target of reducing CO2 emissions by 80%. The majority of this will be in Engineering\, Technology\, Manufacturing\, Installation and Operation of equipment and systems.
In the UK the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) has been set-up to accelerate the development of engineering solutions for affordable\, reliable and clean energy systems for power\, heat and transport. The ETI offers a unique development capability by leveraging the joint skills\, capabilities and funding capacity of its Members - Global Industry groups and the UK Government – with project participants.
This presentation will highlight the overriding issues and opportunities in achieving affordable delivery of low carbon\, sustainable energy and will summarise the ETI Technology Strategy – focusing particularly on offshore renewables\, carbon capture and storage\, transport\, distributed energy and energy networks. The drivers for widespread change will be covered along with some of the potential engineering solutions focusing on the critical aspects of affordability\, the potential UK economic benefits and the associated need for skills development.
David Clarke joined the Energy Technologies Institute as Chief Executive Officer in January 2008 from his previous role as Head of Technology Strategy at Rolls-Royce plc.
He has been involved in collaborative research and development of advanced technologies for over 20 years\, leading a range of research groups including Rolls-Royce’s Advanced Materials development activities and its corporate Strategic Research Centre. With the latter group he led the evaluation and development of new technology opportunities in fields as diverse as fuel cells\, electrical propulsion technologies and advanced computational diagnostics.
He has also been a member of EPSRC Council and is a member of the North West Science Council and the UK Energy Research Partnership.
David graduated from the University of Surrey with a BSc in Materials Technology and a PhD in Composite Materials. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials\, Metals and Mining\, a Fellow of the Energy Institute and a Chartered Engineer.

SUMMARY:Social Financing - Using the Web to Mine Money for Your Venture
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4877945/ ] Raising money from VCs is increasingly difficult for early stage companies--even ones with a good product. New models are rapidly emerging that are changing the landscape for how businesses raise money.
The panel\, organized by GABA and SVASE will discuss these specific topics:
 -What is social financing?
 -What is microfinancing?
-What new tools are available today?
-How companies facilitate sources of social funding
-How social networks can become social financing engines
 Panelists:

SUMMARY:Green and Clean Evening Series: How Green are You Going to Be?
DESCRIPTION: [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/4865051/ ] The greening of our society has been under way for well over a decade and changing our language along the way. The rise of consumers becoming Eco-frugal or going for Eco-status by tuning into Eco-vertising leads the market and entrepreneurs to believe we've shifted from a 'fad' to fundamental changes to our lifestyle. Is that true or a bunch of green washing? The real question is whether the 'tipping point' has been reached in the greening of the American consumer and is their purchasing behavior mirroring their new found green values.
