Juilliard Opera explores the bonds between mothers and sons through the production of two British one-act operas--Benjamin Britten's Curlew River and Ralph Vaughan Williams' Riders to the Sea. Based on Motomasa's Japanese musical drama Sumidagawa and translated to a Christian parable by librettist William Plomer, Curlew River tells the tale of a woman searching for her missing son. Premiered in 1937 and inspired by Irish playwright John Millington Synge's tragedy of the same name, Riders to the Sea examines an elderly woman's fears of losing her remaining sea-faring sons
