205 Lavinia Street in Milton, De. will be hosting a reception featuring the work of two master artists on Saturday September 27, 2008 from 5 to 8 PM.
Landscapes, Found and Imagined shows the art of siblings Katharine Bell and Charlie Boynton, who share a common theme, but explore it in different mediums, with different sensibilities. Landscape photographer Charlie Boynton is showing his large format, platinum and printing out paper contact prints. As he searches for and finds the still point within reflections of light and form, we see the darker side of the enchanted landscape -- these photos of forests and rivers seem almost inhabited, and sometimes a bit spooky. We wonder, who are the unseen beings we sense peering at us? Do they wish us well or mean us harm? Charlie Boynton has lived in Kingston, Rhode Island for many years with his wife, Sally, and has been making photographs for 25 years. Boynton's sister, painter Katharine Bell, works in oil on panel and on paper. Playful and droll, her paintings bring us a lighthearted and lush imaginary landscape -- a place where mischief and fantasy abound. The enchantment she creates includes creatures, human and otherwise, who frolic in a loopy and charming fashion. The viewer can't help but feel beguiled. Known for her narrative family portraits and children's book illustrations, Bell lives in Groton, Mass. with her husband Al.
