In this first-person account of his horrifying experience, Beah tells how at the age of twelve, while fleeing attacking rebels, he was picked up by the Sierra Leone government army, in which he served for three years. Rescued by UNICEF, he came to the United States when he was seventeen and graduated from Oberlin College in 2004.
