David D’Ostilio is a man and “naturally” handy with tools, a rite passed down to him by his grandfather:
“…Dominick D’Ostilio, a carpenter, teacher, and artist. Much of his life informs my actions. My love of woodworking and art come from the skills that Dominick honed and taught me.”
David will demonstrate these skills every Saturday at Open Source Gallery, March 2nd through (dates). “The Chopping Block” is both an homage to his own past and a critique of perceived notions about gender roles. The artist will play the role of lumberjack, donning the stereotypical clothing, bringing in a 10-foot long log and sawing it into smaller pieces (with his grandfather’s saw). He will then chop the stumps into firewood with an antique axe.
“The axe head is refurbished and has a hand-made handle by Ryan Mitchell-Morrison of O’Brave axes. Ryan is originally from Canada and his great uncle was an axe maker.”
During gallery hours other than Saturday, the artifacts of his actions will be diplayed along with the tools and documentation (photographs, video, recorded sound, etc.). This exhibition challenges notions of beauty, identity, and questions where we came from and where we are going.
