It is estimated that over 20,000 residents of the Kansas City Metro area are of Native American heritage. Many more recall stories that their grandmother was part Cherokee or that their great grandfather was thought to be American Indian. Now they are wondering how they can know for sure. Nancy Blue discusses the basic information about tracing your Native American ancestors. She will outline the steps for obtaining a CDIB card (Certificate of Degree of Indian blood). She also covers the requirements for obtaining membership in the tribe. She specializes in the five "Civilized Tribes," Choctaw, Cherokee, Chickasaw, Seminole, and Creek. However, she will have some information about researching other tribes as well. Participants will receive hand-outs listing resources and contact information for further research.
