Howard Rheingold says: "I fell into the computer realm from the typewriter dimension, then plugged my computer into my telephone and got sucked into the Net." An early member of the Well (one of the first virtual communities), Rheingold went on in the mid-1990s to cofound the groundbreaking Web communities HotWired and Electric Minds. He served as editor of the Whole Earth Review and editor in chief of the Millennium Whole Earth Catalog. His many books include "Virtual Reality," chronicling his odyssey through the world of artificial experience. Now active in Second Life, he teaches (at UC Berkeley, Stanford, and elsewhere), writes, and consults on social networking.
