In honor of National White Cane Safety Day, the Low Vision Resource Center will conduct a 5K Fun Run, a 2-mile Walk and a Children’s Sprint on Saturday, October 11, beginning at 8 a.m.
The events will be held at Comanche Lookout Park, 16000 Nacogdoches Road, in collaboration with the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department’s Therapeutic Recreation Program.
The White Cane is commonly accepted as a “symbol of blindness” and those carrying white canes are legally afforded the right of way when crossing a road or in a public place. Race participants do not need to be visually impaired, although the events are designed to call the public’s attention to the White Cane and what it means.
Pre-registration fees will include a commemorative t-shirt and are $20.00 for runners and $10 for walkers. Deadline for pre-registration is October 6, 2008. Late registration including those made on race day will be $25. Packets may be picked up on race day from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m.
Registrations may be made and fees paid by internet at www.lowvisionclub.com. You may also request a form be mailed to you by emailing bill@owlradio.org. or call (210) 829-4223. A parent’s signature is required if a participant is less than 18 years of age.
All proceeds will be donated to the Low Vision Resource Center, a nonprofit, 501(c)3 organization.
