Looking At: Jazz - Jazz Vocalists
Tuesday November 7, 2006 from 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Williamsburg Library Theatre
515 Scotland Street
Williamsburg, Virginia 23185 Get Directions
Williamsburg Regional Library will host a free six-part film viewing, reading and discussion series called Looking At: Jazz, Americas Art Form. The series includes viewing of specially curated films on the history and styles of jazz in America.

Tonight's program features:
Lady Day: the Many Faces of Billie Holiday

Billie Holiday is recognized as one of the greatest blues and jazz vocalists of all time. The film traces Holidays troubled and difficult life while celebrating her artistry. As screenwriter Robert OMeally has said, the film was written as an answer to those commercial films as well as documentaries that would simplify or sensationalize the story of this truly great artistand thus of the jazz tradition in singing. Holidays slow and rough bluesy style conveyed a depth of emotion to jazz standards. She introduced a new timing and rhythm to jazz singing. Her music continues to thrill audiences. Many of her signature tunes are included in this documentary, such as "St. Louis Blues," "My Man," Strange Fruit and "God Bless the Child." Archival film clips show Billie Holiday in performances in film, television, and concert appearances. Interviews with musical colleagues and friends give insight into the troubled life of this giant of American music.

Discussion to follow will be led by Harris Simon, instructor of music at the College of William and Mary and a noted local pianist and harmonica player.
