On October 22, 2006, Ledia Carroll uses a field line chalker to recreate the perimeter of Lago Dolores, a former freshwater lake, as a part of the Mission Lake Project. The full perimeter, which will be outlined with a blue chalk line, will mark the shoreline of the now vanished lake in the Mission District that stretched roughly over a five-block diameter from (what is now) South Van Ness to Guerrero and 15th to 20th Streets.

In conjunction with the re-created lake shoreline, Ledia Carroll presents a Perimeter "Alleycat" style bike race and "Lakeside" BBQ. From 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm registration for the race will take place at the Mission Park and Playground located on Valencia Street between 19th and 20th Streets. The bike race, an urban race demonstrating spontaneity and extremism, begins at 2:00 pm and will wind its way around the blue chalk lake shoreline. There will be five checkpoints along the way of locations with historical significance to the project. At each checkpoint, riders will have the opportunity to collect up to 20 points based on a challenge given by judges at each location. Riders will be required to bring their marks to the finish line where the points will be tallied up and winners chosen. Prizes will be awarded based on style not on speed!

The race concludes at the Mission Park and Playground where the riders can join their fellow lake enthusiasts at the "Lakeside" BBQ. Music provided by DJs Big Daddy and Ranessa.

Ledia Carroll's Mission Lake Project is a part of SoEx Off-Site, a yearlong series of public art projects investigating diverse strategies for exploring and mapping public space organized by Southern Exposure. For more information about SoEx Off-Site please visit www.soex.org.

Mission Lake Project is a social project encouraging San Francisco residents, gallery visitors, and tourists to experience a familiar place in a new light.
