Drawn from the rich holdings of Wesleyan’s Special Collections & Archives, this exhibit highlights works from the history of the photographically illustrated book, from William Henry Fox Talbot’s Pencil of Nature (1844-1846) to photographic albums, scientific books, and examples of contemporary artists’ books. Exploring the interplay of image and text in photographically illustrated books suggests new complexities of meaning not always present in each medium alone and throws new light on the ways that photographic meaning and evidence are shaped by print culture.
