CIIS prioritizes the arts as a crucial element in an integrative education through a formal exhibition program, Spirit in the Arts, which celebrates creativity and affirms the power of art as an agent of change. Spirit in the Arts offers contemporary perspectives that integrate the spiritual, psychological, and aesthetic dimensions of life.

A World Within Our World is cosponsored by the Philosophy, Cosmology, and Consciousness Program at CIIS.

The exhibition will run from October 24 - December 12, 2008.

RECEPTION AND PRESENTATION will be held on Friday, October 24, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM.

Maxine Solomon, an award-winning oil painter who has extensive curatorial experience, has given talks and presentations and conducted painting workshops in the United States and abroad. Over the last 15 years, Solomon has exhibited widely in the Bay Area as well as in countries including Zambia, Ghana, and Armenia where she has worked actively with visual artists and artisans. Her art has been published in various magazines and books including New American Paintings and Great International Writer's Anthology. In this exhibit, two related series of paintings, Verisimilitude: Places, and A World Within Our World, speak not only of our world's common heritage but of its endangerment-of the withering away of both the environment and the diversity of the world's unique cultures. Solomon's active brushstrokes, combined with quiet glazes, capture a moment in time as reality blurs into abstraction and clarity gives way to obscurity. In telling her story, the paint becomes Solomon's partner-as she states, "its texture, its vibrancy, its very nature becomes a crucial component, enabling me to process and speak of that which I see in our shared world."
