Josh MacPhee: Street Art and Counter Power!
Friday November 10, 2006 at 7:30pm
Carnegie Mellon University
Campus
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania Get Directions
in Porter Hall 100

Josh MacPhee presents "Street Art and Counter Power!", a multimedia presentation which argues that street-level artistic acts have a very real potential to become a democratic and grassroots counter-institution to dominant mainstream media. MacPhee will focus on concrete examples of politically motivated street art within recent history: the uprisings in Paris in 1968, Nicaragua in the 1970's, South Africa in the 1980's, and Argentina from 2001 through 2003.

Josh MacPhee's art straddles a number of cultural mediums. He is an artist, designer, curator, and activist. A street stenciler and poster maker for over a decade, he runs a radical art distribution project called "justseeds" (www.justseeds.org) as a way to develop and distribute projects with revolutionary content. He facilitates the Celebrate People's History Poster Project, an ongoing poster series in which different artists create posters to document and remember moments in radical history (www.justseeds.org/cph).

He is also a core member of the Street Art Workers, a far-flung organization of designers who have just launched a new project which brings together 25 artists from 10 different countries (www.streetartworkers.org). Josh is the author of "Stencil Pirates" on Soft Skull Press, as well as the upcoming "Reproduce and Revolt: A Graphic Toolbox for the 21st Century Activist" on Soft Skull Press (a bilingual collection of over 500 reproducible political graphics from around the world) and "Realizing the Impossible: Art Against Authority" (a collection of two dozen essays that address the intersections of art and anarchism) on AK Press.
