Speaker:Margaret Clotworthy (Europeans for Medical Progress)

The recent clinical trial disaster at Northwick Park hospital showed there are serious problems with the way new medicines are tested for safety. There is little doubt that medicines improve the quality of life of millions of people worldwide but adverse reactions to prescribed drugs are now Britain's fourth leading cause of death. This problem is epitomised by Vioxx, the painkiller which has killed tens of thousands of people over the past few years.
What can we do to improve drug safety? Many new and sophisticated human-based tests offer advantages over the animal tests we have relied on in the past. So how should we go about discovering & developing new medicines today?
