The Bowery was once a center for all forms of working class entertainment: minstrel shows, dime museums, vaudeville, burlesque, legit theatres, and early film shows. At the end of the 19th century, the street boasted 99 such places-14 classified as respectable- plus six barrooms to a block.
However by 1927, barely a dozen theaters remained.
Join us for a stroll along "the street that died young"; beginning at McGurk's Suicide Hall" - "the roughest joint in town" - and ending in Chatham Square at the site of the legendary Bowery/Thalia Theatre.
Meet on NE corner of Bowery and Houston Street.
Take the F/V train to Second Avenue station.
