Instead of the usual presentations we've decided to have a Pub Quiz to ease us into 2007. We'll do the usual 'what's been going on in the London Ruby community round-up' before quizzing.
We'll be in the 2nd floor function room at The Old Crown. There will be a bar menu available all night, providing tapas style snacks.
The quiz format will be as follows:
Round 1: London
Round 2: Ruby (community and history)
Round 3: Users (famous folk)
Round 4: Group (music)
Round 5: a picture round
Each round will have 10 questions, but there'll be bonus points available as and when I see fit.
Teams should be of 4 or less (we may change this on the night depending on numbers), and there'll be a prize for best team name.
The prizes are a selection of Ruby books kindly donated by O'Reilly and Addison-Wesley, plus other bits and bobs donated by LRUG members.
I think what Patrick is asking (which I would also be keen to know) is; do non-rubyites stand a chance at winning the prize (justifying any entrance fees) and if we say anything about the superiority of python/perl/php etc. as part of our acceptance speech, will we be stabbed with knives?
Well, each round is 10 questions (there'll be 5). You'll need to know something about Ruby's history and community in order to get some points in the Ruby round.
I imagine you could still win without knowing anything about Ruby based on extreme success in the other rounds. Instead of banking on that though, you could team up with some existing rubyists, we're a friendly bunch.
The major prizes so far are a bunch of ruby books donated by various publishers. Maybe a pythonista / perl monger / phpian wouldn't be so keen on that? There may be other non ruby prizes to come though.
kapowaz: one thing to bear in mind is that you're playing in teams, and this might be a great way to pick up some Ruby background knowledge and esoterica merely by coming along and joining a team with some folks who have a bit more of a Ruby Background.
Regardless, it's going to be a fun night, and it's more about the socialising than proving your Rubyknow ;-)
