Popular genres of entertainment are often the most effective vehicles for reflection on serious social issues. Mexican and Latino cinemas frequently employ popular conventions from science fiction, fantasy, crime drama and action in order explore issues, including immigration, labor and gender relations. This two-day festival will feature a dynamic selection of Mexican and Latino films that are at once popular and political.

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS:
All screenings will be held in the Norris Theatre.

Science Fiction, Fantasy and Immigration Friday, March 30 7-11 p.m.: The works of independent filmmaker Alex Rivera will be featured, including Why Cybraceros, The Borders Trilogy, Día de la Independencia, Las Papas del Papa and The Sixth Section. In addition, we hope to preview his new feature film The Sleep Dealer. Rivera will attend the screenings and take audience questions afterwards.

Action Films, Border Policing and Gender Saturday, March 31 10 a.m.-1 p.m.: The classic Mexican action film La banda del carro rojo (The Red Car Gang) will be screened in Spanish with English subtitles. It will be preceded by several related shorts by artist and critical studies graduate student Adán Avalos. Avalos and USC critical studies professor Curtis Marez will lead a discussion following the screenings. 2-5 p.m.: Sin dejar huella (Without a Trace), directed by acclaimed Mexcian filmmaker Maria Novaro, reinvents the borderland crime drama with a feminist lens. Border cinema expert Norma Iglesias Prieto, a professor at San Diego State University, will lead a post-screening discussion.
