The Convention will be a one day gathering of 1,000 people on Saturday 28 February 2009 at the Institute for Education in central London. It is being sponsored by Rowntrees, openDemocracy, Liberty and the Guardian.
The main theatre will host a plenary session in the morning with a panel of nationally distinguished speakers from across the political spectrum discussing “The crisis of fundamental rights and freedoms”. There will be two sets of ten parallel sessions in the afternoon each focused on a different question relating to Modern Liberty. Their panels are being sponsored and organised by a wide range of interested organisations. There will be a final plenary session in the main hall on “Freedom and democracy after the market meltdown” followed by an informal discussion of the day over drinks (see here for a full programme).
A third of the tickets will be for students.
We are planning to organise at least six regional events across the UK on the day of the Convention. They will take a webcast of the plenary sessions and host their own discussions. No2ID will be co-ordinating these in partnership with Unlock Democracy and Amnesty. There will be an open invite to others to hold their own meetings and events in the following weeks.
