Exhibit Opening: "Viewpoint" by Dorothy Simpson Krause
Thursday March 1, 2007 from 6:00pm - 8:00pm
Judi Rotenberg Gallery
130 Newbury Street
Boston, Massachusetts Get Directions
The Judi Rotenberg Gallery is pleased to present Dorothy Simpson Krause's newest work in an exhibition titled "Viewpoint." The exhibition is comprised of digital collages of meandering, lonely or foreboding paths and misty, haunting vistas. The traditional landscape however is the entry point to the artist's complex technique of layering abstracted and representational images, materials and substrates. The elegant realizations of Krause's 'scapes require the viewer to peel back each visual layer and then let them flip forward to reconstitute to a whole – here tthe depth of field and emotion sing out clearly and the viewer locates themselves in the works. The result is a sense of emotional presence and absence more than of location specifically. The name of the show, "Viewpoint," is also the name of the home and studio where the artist has worked for the past 26 years. The artist's particular horizon, from season to season, year to year, provides the inspiration for these mixed media pieces. Reflected in the work is her thoughtful and often mournful awareness of humans' impact on nature. In a time of concern for the environment’s future, Krause’s pieces are "elegie(s), lament(s) for a vanishing landscape." They also reveal her most intimate perspective.

Dorothy Simpson Krause is a painter, collage artist, printmaker and pioneering digital artist whose work incorporates both traditional and digital media. She is Professor Emeritus at Massachusetts College of Art where she founded the Computer Arts Center and a founding member of Digital Atelier, artists collaborative. She co-authored Digital Art Studio published in 2004 by Watson-Guptil and is currently writing Book + Art, which feature her more than 50 books.
