Harry Camp Memorial lecture series by Simon Schaffer - Discussion

Simon Schaffer, professor in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Cambridge, will be in residence at the Stanford Humanities Center for the week of January 14-18, 2008. He will give two lectures (titles TBD) -- on January 14 and 16, and two discussions -- on January 15 and 17.

Professor Schaffer's research interests include the history of physical science and the social history of science. His publications include "Leviathan and the air pump: Hobbes, Boyle and the experimental life" with Steven Shapin (1985), and pieces in "The Uses of Experiment: studies in the natural sciences" (1989), "William Whewell: a composite portrait" (1991), and "Inscribing Science: scientific texts and the materiality of communication."

In addition to his work at Cambridge, Professor Schaffer has also been a presenter on the BBC. He shared the prestigious Erasmus Prize with Steven Shapin for "Leviathan and the Air-Pump."
