Distinguished British historian, Sir Alistair Horne’s 1977 landmark historic account of the French colonial war in Algeria, A Savage War of Peace has emerged as an underground classic among military officers in Iraq. Until recently, used copies of this book were selling on Amazon.com for $150 as policy makers, analysts, and the general public were trying to understand the complex problems of the Iraqi insurgency by studying the parallel problems faced by the French army in Algeria. In response to huge demand for the book New York Review of Books has brought out a new paperback edition that includes a new preface by Horne that discusses the parallels between the Algerian and Iraqi wars. Besides treating the military problems posed by each of these occupations, he has added a discussion of the problem of torture, the damage inflicted not only on individuals, but also the damage that Abu Ghraib inflicted upon the viability of a peaceful American occupation in Iraq. Sir Alistair Horne is a fellow at St. Anthony’s College, Oxford, and lives in Oxfordshire. He was awarded the French Légion d’Honneur in 1993 and received a knighthood in 2003 for his work on French history. He is author of 18 books, including La Belle France, The Price of Glory, and Seven Ages of Paris.
