About the Talk

The days of building a "website" are over. We are full-fledged application designers, the web is merely our front-end. The increasing complexity of application development is causing our various disciplines to converge, with designers dabbling in front-end code and developers working through interaction paradigms. Though the scope of our work and particular roles continues to increase, excellent communication remains the key to success. Tom Watson will discuss principles that will help bridge this gap so you can create simple and beautiful web applications.

About the Speaker

Tom has been working on the web for the past 10 years. He's a self-proclaimed web geek with a degree in Computer Science from a small liberal arts college in Oregon. There he learned not only how to code, but how to think about problems and explain incredibly technical solutions in a straight-forward, jargon-free way.

After graduation he spent his first year teaching English to high school kids in Japan by day, and wrote a small, PHP-based content management system by night. After returning, he spent a quick stint down in California converting complex technical documentation into easy to understand web pages before arriving at the Children's Hospital in Seattle where he designed and developed their numerous web sites.

Tom is a front end design technologist. He believes web sites should function as beautifully as they look, and shouldn't require users to scratch there head trying to figure out how to get things done.
