Having decided to get married, the prosperous and complacent proprietor of a high-class provision emporium leaves the shop in the charge of two assistants so that he can wine and dine his intended in town. With the cat's away the mice put up the shutters and go on the razzle. As they dodge their employer (and others) through Vienna in pursuit of wine, women and song the precise intricate machinery of plot and sub-plot is soon whirring at full speed to deploy all the elements of classic farce. Tom Stoppard's technical and verbal skills are at their hilarious best.
